    The Game Sense approach (GSA) helps sport teachers adopt a pedagogical toolkit for the complex interplay of collective decision making in tennis that evolves from the dynamics of momentary configurations of play meeting the personal coordination dynamics of the players. This pedagogical toolkit emphasises game-based play to teach players how to perceive the game as “thinking players” capable of functional behaviours that answer the requirements of momentary configurations of play. This paper, therefore, builds on recent theoretical debate in the areas of skill acquisition, the complementarity of perception-decision making and personal coordination dynamics (techniques), complex learning theory and coaching pedagogy, to connect the constraints-perspective of skill acquisition and the pedagogy of the Game Sense approach to enable theoretically informed tennis teaching. Practical implications of game-based training will be explained using the example of the Tennis for Primary Schools program alignment with the developmental stages of the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education (ACHPE), which are described as student achievement standards in this curriculum.El enfoque centrado en el sentido del juego (GSA) proporciona a los profesores deportivos un conjunto de herramientas pedagógicas para el abordaje de las complejas interacciones que tienen lugar en la toma colectiva de decisiones en el tenis, que evoluciona a partir de la confluencia dinámica entre las configuraciones momentáneas del juego y la coordinación entre los jugadores. Estas herramientas pedagógicas destacan la comprensión del juego a fin de enseñar a los deportistas a percibirlo como “jugadores pensantes”, capaces de comportamientos funcionales que respondan a los requisitos de las configuraciones momentáneas del juego. Este artículo se basa en los recientes debates teóricos en las áreas que estudian la adquisición de habilidades; la complementariedad entre los procesos de percepción, la toma de decisiones y las dinámicas de coordinación personal; la compleja teoría del aprendizaje y la pedagogía del entrenamiento; todo ello para conectar la perspectiva de los “limitadores” (contraints, ver nota 1) y la pedagogía del enfoque centrado en el sentido del juego, para lograr una enseñanza del tenis fundamentada teóricamente. Las implicaciones prácticas del entrenamiento basado en el sentido del juego se explicarán sirviéndonos del ejemplo de un programa de Tenis para la Escuelas Primaria, el cual está en línea con las etapas del desarrollo del Currículo Australiano de Educación Física y Salud (ACHPE), descritas en el mismo como estándares de logro para los estudiantes

    Psychosocial/survivorship issues in breast cancer: are we doing better?

    Modern breast cancer treatment offers many women greater prospects of cure or lengthier, good quality survival than was possible in the past. Advances include improved diagnostic and staging procedures, sophisticated onco-plastic surgery, enhanced radiotherapy techniques, and targeted systemic therapies. Much more attention has also been paid to cancer care delivery and access to specialist nurses, counsellors, support groups, and services provided by breast cancer charities. However, there are some concerns that these considerable improvements in treatment delivery and clinical outcomes have not led to similar benefits in the psychosocial, functional, and sexual well-being of women. The impact that non-life threatening, long-term iatrogenic harms of otherwise efficacious anticancer treatments has on patients is often overlooked; this is in part because of the emphasis given to physician-reported safety data in trials and the general exclusion of patient-reported outcomes (PROs). A failure to utilise reliable PRO measures has meant that some problems are underreported, which consequently has hampered much-needed research into ameliorative interventions. Systematic monitoring of quality of life-threatening side effects would permit early implementation of effective interventions and enhance long-term survivorship. Some examples of the pervasive difficulties that continue to affect survivors and evidence that certain interventions might help are provided in this commentary

    Enhancing Sensitivity Classification with Semantic Features using Word Embeddings

    Government documents must be reviewed to identify any sensitive information they may contain, before they can be released to the public. However, traditional paper-based sensitivity review processes are not practical for reviewing born-digital documents. Therefore, there is a timely need for automatic sensitivity classification techniques, to assist the digital sensitivity review process. However, sensitivity is typically a product of the relations between combinations of terms, such as who said what about whom, therefore, automatic sensitivity classification is a difficult task. Vector representations of terms, such as word embeddings, have been shown to be effective at encoding latent term features that preserve semantic relations between terms, which can also be beneficial to sensitivity classification. In this work, we present a thorough evaluation of the effectiveness of semantic word embedding features, along with term and grammatical features, for sensitivity classification. On a test collection of government documents containing real sensitivities, we show that extending text classification with semantic features and additional term n-grams results in significant improvements in classification effectiveness, correctly classifying 9.99% more sensitive documents compared to the text classification baseline

    Broadening conceptions of curriculum for young people : reports from three student - teachers on exchange

    Research reports prepared by three Australian preservice teachers Paula Shaw, Chris Sharp and Scott McDonald undertaking their teacher education practicum in Canada, form the basis of this paper. The reports provide critical insights into three aspects of education for young people in both Canada and Australia. They also provide critical insight into the ways in which a practicum research project, along with the opportunities afforded through an international experience, enabled the preservice teachers to broaden their understanding of the curriculum for young people, of issues relevant to the diverse needs of young people, and of themselves and their priorities as teachers. The preservice teachers investigated three topics: attempts to reduce homophobia in schools; the presence or absence of Aboriginal content in the school curricula in British Columbia and Queensland; and “schools-within-schools” as a means to meet the needs of diverse student populations.     James Barnet - New South Wales Colonial Architect (1865-1890): 'an underpaid officer of the Government'

    In this study an examination is made of the public career of James Barnet, architect who, after training in London, migrated to Sydney in 1854. He joined the Colonial Architect's Office in 1860 and on 31 October 1862 he was directed to act in the position of Colonial Architect of New South Wales; on 1 January 1865 he was appointed to that position which he occupied until 30 June 1890. The staff of the Office, acting under his general direction, prepared plans for and supervised the construction of more buildings than any other architect in practice in Sydney during the nineteenth century. Furthermore, he achieved more than any other occupant of the position and was probably exceeded only by E.H. Farmer who was Government Architect of New South Wales during 1958-1973. My emphasis has been placed upon Barnet's work as a nineteenth century civil servant rather than upon his achievements as an architect. Barnet can be shown to have been a competent administrator who satisfied N.C. Coombs' criteria that such a person was one who made 'possible the achievement of other people's dreams'. The argument is also advanced that it was the senior civil servants, rather than the politicians, who made a continuing and lasting contribution to the development of New South Wales during a period of rapid ministerial and parliamentary changes

    Serial interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) testing to monitor treatment responses in cases of feline mycobacteriosis

    The interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) is used to diagnose cases of feline mycobacteriosis, but the use of serial testing to monitor treatment responses has not been evaluated in this species. From a population of cats that underwent IGRA testing for diagnostic investigation, individuals were identified with a pre- and end-of-treatment IGRA that passed control thresholds. The number of cats which reverted to negative at the end-of-treatment IGRA, changes in paired antigen-specific optical density (OD) values and differences in the pre-treatment antigen-specific OD values for those which underwent reversion were compared. Factors to explain reversion or recurrence of disease post-treatment were explored. Four of 18 cats (22%) reverted to negativity at the point of clinical resolution (p = 0.33), there was no difference in paired antigen-specific OD values (p ≥ 0.12), and cats that reverted did not have a lower baseline OD value (p = 0.63). No statistically significant factors were identified to predict reversion (p ≥ 0.08). Remaining positive at the end of treatment IGRA was not associated with recurrence of disease post-treatment (p = 0.34). Overall, these data suggest there is limited value in the use of the IGRA to monitor treatment responses in cats

    Comparative Pathogenomics Reveals Horizontally Acquired Novel Virulence Genes in Fungi Infecting Cereal Hosts

    Comparative analyses of pathogen genomes provide new insights into how pathogens have evolved common and divergent virulence strategies to invade related plant species. Fusarium crown and root rots are important diseases of wheat and barley world-wide. In Australia, these diseases are primarily caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium pseudograminearum. Comparative genomic analyses showed that the F. pseudograminearum genome encodes proteins that are present in other fungal pathogens of cereals but absent in non-cereal pathogens. In some cases, these cereal pathogen specific genes were also found in bacteria associated with plants. Phylogenetic analysis of selected F. pseudograminearum genes supported the hypothesis of horizontal gene transfer into diverse cereal pathogens. Two horizontally acquired genes with no previously known role in fungal pathogenesis were studied functionally via gene knockout methods and shown to significantly affect virulence of F. pseudograminearum on the cereal hosts wheat and barley. Our results indicate using comparative genomics to identify genes specific to pathogens of related hosts reveals novel virulence genes and illustrates the importance of horizontal gene transfer in the evolution of plant infecting fungal pathogens
