A new technique for interpreting depolarization measurements using the CRL atmospheric lidar in the Canadian High Arctic
Linear depolarization measurement capabilities were added to the CANDAC Rayleigh-Mie-Raman lidar (CRL) at Eureka, Nunavut, in the Canadian High Arctic. This upgrade enables inferences of the phases (liquid versus ice) of cold and mixed-phase clouds, including during polar winter. A rotating-polarizer module was installed in the lidar, and depolarization measurements were calibrated according to existing methods. An alternate calculation technique, using the lidar\u27s existing visible Rayleigh elastic channel in combination with the new rotating polarizer channel, was developed. A detailed mathematical description of both methods and their calibrations is presented. The new method is superior to the traditional method for the CRL: It has lower uncertainty, and gives depolarization parameter values at higher spatial-temporal resolution
Effects of generation on tenure-track faculty satisfaction
The academy is generationally diversifying as Baby Boomer faculty members continue to
move into retirement and younger faculty enter the workforce. People are dispositionally
inclined to explain differences they perceive in others, but oftentimes these judgments are
based on assumptions and stereotypes. Consultants and practitioners predict that
generational diversification will lead to employee friction. The reality is that at this time
the proposed relationship is not well understood and substantial systematic evidence
supporting the hypothesis is limited. However, if administrators continue to consider the
generational recommendations published in the popular press, it may be an indication
there truly is some phenomenon occurring in higher education employees. Therefore,
understanding and addressing generational differences becomes increasingly more
important for the good of faculty and administrators alike, as employees across a broad
age range will be working together.
This quantitative study explored the effects of demographic variables, namely
generation, on tenure-track faculty job satisfaction. Aside from obtaining a much-needed
generational snapshot of tenure-track faculty, this study sought to determine if generation
could be utilized to predict a variety of job satisfaction indices. Multiple regression
analyses were conducted on variables obtained from a pre-existing aggregated COACHE Tenure-Track Faculty Job Satisfaction Survey dataset. Statistically significant
demographic effects emerged in seven job satisfaction indices, but multiple regression
results provided little evidence to suggest demographic variables, which have frequently
been used to explain differences between groups, are strong predictors of tenure-track
faculty satisfaction. Obviously, these findings raise questions about the credibility of
claims coming from generational practitioners and consultants and signify that more
research is urgently needed. Future researchers may consider capturing information on a
variety of work-related outcomes, not just job satisfaction, on a broad age-range of
faculty members over an extended period of time. However, before any meaningful
advances in answering questions about entire groups of employees based solely on their
generational membership can be made, researchers must come to an agreement on the
exact taxonomy, attributes, and boundaries of the generations
Design and Manufacturing of the Carbon Fiber Roll Table
Backpacking and exploration of the great outdoors has surged in popularity in the 21st century, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic called for many to change their hobbies and interests. Additionally, many people explore new, remote locations as a way of breaking free from the chains of addiction to media and reliance on technology. Our team experienced this shift firsthand as our interest in backpacking and exploration has grown in recent years. Upon our reflection of this newfound hobby, we realized that the camping equipment market was missing one thing: a “do it all” backpacking table.
Our team wanted to address this need in the backpacking community by creating a versatile, lightweight, and durable camping table that will help people experience the beauty found in nature. The product design, cost, and manufacturing process were all developed and chosen with these criteria in mind.
In spring of 2022, we conducted market research through public polls and think tanks. From this research, we established a target market of individuals between the ages of 18-30 years old that are active backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts. This target market is a niche sub-category of the camping equipment and accessory market. Additionally, market research identified four consumer considerations: durability, versatility, weight, and affordability, all of which were considered during each phase of the design and production process.
After establishing a market for our product concept, an outline of future work and procedures was established to manufacture our product. To begin, we would need to convert our drawings and ideas into an initial prototype. This phase of the manufacturing process was critical for success because it served as the foundation of what our product would be down the road. Additionally, this initial prototype was a proof of concept to prove that our design drawing was feasible.
Next, our timeline called for product design and material changes based on our review of the initial prototype. These changes factored in physical limitations and manufacturing process restrictions that would be problematic in the future. For example, the primary design change was related to the coupler that holds all three table legs together at a single point. The initial design was bulky and expensive, so creating a more efficient coupler was necessary.
All three previous stages of our process lead to a final product that resembled the product we set out to create. The final product was lightweight, versatile, and strong. The product itself was nearly flawless.
In review of our final product, the next stage was completing a holistic profitability analysis of the end product since the primary mission of all businesses is to create income for stakeholders. We were able to complete this holistic analysis by combining data from processing time studies, material purchase orders, industry research, and target market surveys. Although we utilized this same data when making design and material decisions, the result of this end-stage financial study proved that our final product and design would be profitable
Coastal plant growth and CO2 enrichment: Can the productivity of black needle rush keep pace with sea level rise?
The rate of sea level change has varied considerably over geological time, with rapid increases (0.25 cm yr-1) at the
end of the last ice age to more modest increases over the last 4,000 years (0.04 cm yr-1; Hendry 1993). Due to anthropogenic contributions to climate change, however, the rate of sea level rise is expected to increase between
0.10 and 0.25 cm year-1 for many coastal areas (Warrick et al. 1996). Notwithstanding, it has been predicted that
over the next 100 years, sea levels along the northeastern coast of North Carolina may increase by an astonishing 0.8

Restrictive Breathing Mask Reduces Total Repetitions in Resistance-Trained Males: An Ongoing Study
Recently a popular exercise training device has been developed, which has been promoted by companies as a training aid, known as a restrictive breathing mask (RBM).The RBM is designed to simulate training at higher altitudes and has become commonplace for individuals to utilize during resistance-training sessions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a RBM on muscle performance and perceptual measures in resistance-trained males. METHODS: A cross-over study design was utilized in 9 resistance-trained males with performance trials separated by 7 days. A baseline strength testing session was completed for 12RM for squat, leg press, and leg extension. Participants completed the lower body workout with no mask or RBM. After the initial warm up, participants completed 4 sets of reps to failure of squats, leg press, and leg extension with 2 minutes rest between sets and 3 minutes between exercises. Heart rate was collected immediately post set. Participants completed a 10cm visual stress scale immediately post resistance training session and Session RPE (SRPE) was collected 10 minutes post. Paired T-tests were utilized to analyze total session reps, SRPE, average post set session heart rate, and session stress scale. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in total session reps during the RBM trial compared to the no mask trial (p\u3c 0.001). SRPE was significantly higher during the RBM trial compared to the no mask trial (p= 0.003). There was a significant elevation in perceived stress during the RBM trial (p= 0.01). Finally, there was a statistically significant increase in post set heart rate during the RBM session (p=0.04) CONCLUSION: Based on the performance variables, it appears that a RBM reduces the total repetitions that an individual can complete during an acute bout of resistance training, while also increasing the perceived difficulty and stressfulness of the bout. Subsequently, a reduction in mechanical stimuli could result in a diminished hypertrophic response over time
Diagnostic and Prognostic Significance of Complement in Patients with Alcohol-associated Hepatitis
BACKGROUND and AIMS: Given the lack of effective therapies and high mortality in acute alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), it is important to develop rationally-designed biomarkers for effective disease management. Complement, a critical component of the innate immune system, contributes to uncontrolled inflammatory responses leading to liver injury, but is also involved in hepatic regeneration. Here we investigated if a panel of complement proteins and activation products would provide useful biomarkers for severity of AH and aid in predicting 90 days mortality.
APPROACH and RESULTS: Plasma samples collected at time of diagnosis from 254 patients with moderate and severe AH recruited from four medical centers and 31 healthy individuals were used to quantify complement proteins by ELISA and Luminex arrays. Components of the classical and lectin pathways, including complement factors C2, C4b and C4d, as well as complement factor I (CFI) and C5, were reduced in AH patients compared to healthy individuals. In contrast, components of the alternative pathway, including complement factor Ba (CFBa) and factor D (CFD), were increased. Markers of complement activation were also differentially evident, with C5a increased and the soluble terminal complement complex (sC5b9) decreased in AH. Mannose binding lectin (MBL), C4b, CFI, C5 and sC5b9 were negatively correlated with model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, while CFBa and CFD were positively associated with disease severity. Lower CFI and sC5b9 were associated with increased 90-day mortality in AH.
CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these data indicate that AH is associated with a profound disruption of complement. Inclusion of complement, especially CFI and sC5b9, along with other laboratory indicators, could improve diagnostic and prognostic indications of disease severity and risk of mortality for AH patients
Association Between Community Social Vulnerability and Preventable Hospitalizations
Preventable hospitalizations are common and costly events that burden patients and our health care system. While research suggests that these events are strongly linked to ambulatory care access, emerging evidence suggests they may also be sensitive to a patient’s social, environmental, and economic conditions. This study examines the association between variations in social vulnerability and preventable hospitalization rates. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of county-level preventable hospitalization rates for 33 states linked with data from the 2020 Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). Preventable hospitalizations were 40% higher in the most vulnerable counties compared with the least vulnerable. Adjusted regression results confirm the strong relationship between social vulnerability and preventable hospitalizations. Our results suggest wide variation in community-level preventable hospitalization rates, with robust evidence that variation is strongly related to a community’s social vulnerability. The human toll, societal cost, and preventability of these hospitalizations make understanding and mitigating these inequities a national priority

Numerical analysis of wavefront aberration correction using multielectrode electrowetting-based devices.
We present numerical simulations of multielectrode electrowetting devices used in a novel optical design to correct wavefront aberration. Our optical system consists of two multielectrode devices, preceded by a single fixed lens. The multielectrode elements function as adaptive optical devices that can be used to correct aberrations inherent in many imaging setups, biological samples, and the atmosphere. We are able to accurately simulate the liquid-liquid interface shape using computational fluid dynamics. Ray tracing analysis of these surfaces shows clear evidence of aberration correction. To demonstrate the strength of our design, we studied three different input aberrations mixtures that include astigmatism, coma, trefoil, and additional higher order aberration terms, with amplitudes as large as one wave at 633 nm
Enhancing legacy in palliative care: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial of Dignity Therapy focused on positive outcomes
BACKGROUND: Dignity Therapy is a brief psychotherapy that can enhance a sense of legacy while addressing the emotional and existential needs of patients receiving hospice or palliative care. In Dignity Therapy, patients create a formalized “legacy” document that records their most cherished memories, their lessons learned in life, as well as their hopes and dreams for loved ones in the future. To date, this treatment has been studied for its impact on mitigating distress within hospice and palliative care populations and has provided mixed results. This study will instead focus on whether Dignity Therapy enhances positive outcomes in this population. METHODS/DESIGN: In this study, 90 patients with cancer receiving hospice or palliative care will complete a mixed-methods randomized controlled trial of Dignity Therapy (n = 45) versus Supportive Attention (n = 45). The patients will be enrolled in the study for 3 weeks, receiving a total of six study visits. The primary outcomes examine whether the treatment will quantitatively increase levels of positive affect and a sense of life closure. Secondary outcomes focus on gratitude, hope, life satisfaction, meaning in life, resilience, and self-efficacy. Using a fixed, embedded dataset design, this study will additionally use qualitative interviews to explore patients’ perceptions regarding the use of positive outcome measures and whether these outcomes are appropriately matched to their experiences in therapy. DISCUSSION: Dignity Therapy has shown mixed results when evaluating its impact on distress, although no other study to date has solely focused on the potential positive aspects of this treatment. This study is novel in its use of mixed methods assessments to focus on positive outcomes, and will provide valuable information about patients’ direct experiences in this area.
