    Back to the future? Habits and rational addiction in UK tobacco and alcohol demand.

    This paper develops a dynamic modeling approach for the Almost Ideal Demand System, which is consistent with the rational addiction theory. The forward-looking hypothesis is combined with that of convex adjustment costs in the presence of non-stationary cointegrated variables. Estimation is based on a two-step strategy based on cointegration and GMM techniques. Results on UK tobacco and alcohol demand support the adopted specifications and highlight the degree of complementarity between addictive goods.

    Causal inference on the impact of nutrition policies using observational data

    We discuss the state-of-the-art in the application of quasi-experimental methods to estimate the impact of nutrition policies based on observational data. This field of application is less mature compared to other settings, especially labour and health policy, as food economists have started to implement widely counterfactual methods only over the last decade. We review the underlying assumptions behind the most prominent methods, when they can be regarded as credible and if/when they can be tested. We especially focus on the problem of dealing with unobserved confounding factors, emphasizing recent evidence on the limitations of propensity score methods, and the hard task of convincing reviewers about the quality of instrumental variables. We discuss the application of Difference-in-Difference, with an emphasis on its potential in consumer panel data applications, and how results from Regression Discontinuity Design studies should be interpreted. Finally, we cover the estimation of counterfactual outcomes using structural methods and provide an overview of recent developments and current gaps

    Spreading factors of a globally invading coastal copepod

    The Mediterranean Sea is one of the areas most affected by alien invasions, which are continuously increasing also due to intense human activities and environmental changes that favor the introduction of species previously unable to colonize the basin. This is the case of the copepods of the genus Pseudodiaptomus, first described in the Indian Ocean and considered one of the most resistant to unfavorable conditions but never recorded in the Mediterranean until 2011 though present in adjacent seas. Pseudodiaptomus marinus, in particular, is common in shallow marine-brackish waters and is one of the species often found in ballast waters and in aquaculture plants. Native of Japan, it has started spreading since 1950s and its populations have established in several harbours, eutrophic inlets and lagoons along the coasts of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In the last few years, P. marinus has been increasingly reported in European Seas (Mediterranean Sea and North Sea). In this paper, we review the invasion history of this species with a special emphasis on its records in the Mediterranean Sea, and its occurrence and establishment in Sicilian waters. We also compare the biological traits and population dynamics of P. marinus with those of other representative of the genus and discuss about the possible mechanisms of introduction in new environments. Aim of our work is to understand the reasons of successful invasion of P. marinus and the environmental and biological factors that may lead to its further biogeographic expansion

    Supporting cross-domain system-level environmental and earth science

    Answering the key challenges for society due to environmental issues like climate change, pollution and loss of biodiversity, and making the right decisions to tackle these in a cost-efficient and sustainable way requires scientific understanding of the Earth System. This scientific knowledge can then be used to inform the general public and policymakers. Scientific understanding starts with having available the right data, often in the form of observations. Research Infrastructures (RIs) exist to perform these observations in the required quality and to make the data available to first of all the researchers. In the current Big Data era, the increasing challenge is to provide the data in an interoperable and machine-readable and understandable form. The European RIs on environment formed a project cluster called ENVRI that tackles these issues. In this chapter, we introduce the societal relevance of the environmental data produced by the RIs and discuss the issues at hand in providing the relevant data according to the so-called FAIR principles

    A caveolin-binding domain in the HCN4 channels mediates functional interaction with caveolin proteins

    Pacemaker (HCN) channels have a key role in the generation and modulation of spontaneous activity of sinoatrial node myocytes. Previous work has shown that compartmentation of HCN4 pacemaker channels within caveolae regulates important functions, but the molecular mechanism responsible is still unknown. HCN channels have a conserved caveolin-binding domain (CBD) composed of three aromatic amino acids at the N-terminus; we sought to evaluate the role of this CBD in channel-protein interaction by mutational analysis. We generated two HCN4 mutants with a disrupted CBD (Y259S, F262V) and two with conservative mutations (Y259F, F262Y). In CHO cells expressing endogenous caveolin-1 (cav-1), alteration of the CBD shifted channels activation to more positive potentials, slowed deactivation and made Y259S and F262V mutants insensitive to cholesterol depletion-induced caveolar disorganization. CBD alteration also caused a significant decrease of current density, due to a weaker HCN4-cav-1 interaction and accumulation of cytoplasmic channels. These effects were absent in mutants with a preserved CBD. In caveolin-1-free fibroblasts, HCN4 trafficking was impaired and current density reduced with all constructs; the activation curve of F262V was not altered relative to wt, and that of Y259S displayed only half the shift than in CHO cells. The conserved CBD present in all HCN isoforms mediates their functional interaction with caveolins. The elucidation of the molecular details of HCN4-cav-1 interaction can provide novel information to understand the basis of cardiac phenotypes associated with some forms of caveolinopathies

    Mitigation of Double-crested Cormorant Impacts on Lake Ontario: From Planning and Practice to Product Delivery

    The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation initiated a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) control program in the eastern basin of Lake Ontario to mitigate cormorant impacts in 1999. Key objectives included improving the quality of Smallmouth Bass (Micropterus dolomieu) and other fisheries, restoring the structure and function of the warmwater fish community and reducing cormorant impacts to nesting habitats of other colonial waterbird species. In eight years of intensive control, cormorant numbers declined, with a corresponding reduction in estimated fish consumption. Diversity and numbers of co-occurring waterbirds either increased or have not been shown to be negatively impacted by management. Woody vegetation favorable to Black-crowned Night-Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) has been maintained. A ca. 2.5-fold increase in the abundance of Smallmouth Bass abundance in assessment nets over the last seven years is a sign of improved recruitment to the fishery. Since the target population level of 4,500 to 6,000 cormorants has essentially been achieved, the eastern Lake Ontario cormorant program is expected to shift in 2007 from a population reduction focus towards a less intensive program intended to prevent population resurgence
