Determination of the Gaugino Mass Parameter M_1 in Different Linear Collider Modes
We study the different linear collider modes with regard to the determination
of the gaugino mass parameter M_1. In a specific mSUGRA inspired scenario we
compare four processes with polarized beams: (a) e+ e- --> neutralino_1
neutralino_2 --> neutralino_1 neutralino_1 e+ e-, (b) e- gamma --> neutralino_1
selectron_{L/R} --> neutralino_1 neutralino_1 e-, (c) gamma gamma -->
chargino_1^+ chargino_1^- --> neutralino_1 neutralino_1 e+ e- neutrino_e
anti-neutrino_e, (d) e- e- --> selectron_{L/R} selectron_{L/R} --> neutralino_1
neutralino_1 e- e-.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, LaTex, Talk given at the 5th International Linear

Determination of spin polarization in InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots
The spin polarization of electrons trapped in InAs self-assembled quantum dot
ensembles is investigated. A statistical approach for the population of the
spin levels allows one to infer the spin polarization from the measure values
of the addition energies. From the magneto-capacitance spectroscopy data, the
authors found a fully polarized ensemble of electronic spins above 10 T when
and at 2.8 K. Finally, by including the g-tensor
anisotropy the angular dependence of spin polarization with the magnetic field
orientation and strength could be determined.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, Accepted Appl. Phys. Let
Lande g-tensor in semiconductor nanostructures
Understanding the electronic structure of semiconductor nanostructures is not
complete without a detailed description of their corresponding spin-related
properties. Here we explore the response of the shell structure of InAs
self-assembled quantum dots to magnetic fields oriented in several directions,
allowing the mapping of the g-tensor modulus for the s and p shells. We found
that the g-tensors for the s and p shells show a very different behavior. The
s-state in being more localized allows the probing of the confining potential
details by sweeping the magnetic field orientation from the growth direction
towards the in-plane direction. As for the p-state, we found that the g-tensor
modulus is closer to that of the surrounding GaAs, consistent with a larger
delocalization. These results reveal further details of the confining
potentials of self-assembled quantum dots that have not yet been probed, in
addition to the assessment of the g-tensor, which is of fundamental importance
for the implementation of spin related applications.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Microstrip resonator for microwaves with controllable polarization
In this work the authors implemented a resonator based upon microstrip
cavities that permits the generation of microwaves with arbitrary polarization.
Design, simulation, and implementation of the resonators were performed using
standard printed circuit boards. The electric field distribution was mapped
using a scanning probe cavity perturbation technique. Electron spin resonance
using a standard marker was carried out in order to verify the polarization
control from linear to circular.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
Employment restructuring and flexibility in Austrian and Danish banking
The literature on the impact of new competitive forces on
‘traditional’ industries in Europe tends to emphasize a rather unidirectional line of development. Concentration of capital will pave the way for structural adaptation leading to rationalization and redundancies. In contrast, this cross-national study of the Austrian and Danish banking industries, which have very much in common in terms of their contextual characteristics, indicates rather diverse approaches to pressures for change. Even though competitive pressures are similar, differences in employment restructuring and flexibility prevail between the two national sectors
1995, Spatial and temporal variability of late Neogene equatorial Pacific carbonate
High-resolution, continuous records of GRAPE wet bulk density (a carbonate proxy) from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 138 provide one the opportunity for a detailed study of eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean carbonate sedimentation during the last 6 m.y. The transect of sites drilled spans both latitude and longitude in the eastern equatorial Pacific from 90° to 110°W and from 5°S to 10°N. Two modes of variability are resolved through the use of Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. In the presence of large tectonic and climatic boundary condition changes over the last 6 m.y., the dominant mode of spatial variability in carbonate sedimentation is remarkably constant. The first mode accounts for over 50% of the variance in the data, and is consistent with forcing by equatorial divergence. This mode characterizes both carbonate concentration and carbonate mass accumulation rate time series. Variability in the first mode is highly coherent with insolation, indicating a strong linear relationship between equatorial Pacific car bonate sedimentation and Milankovitch variability. Frequency domain analysis indicates that the coupling to equatorial divergence in carbonate sedimentation is strongest in the precession band (19-23 k.y.) and weakest though present at lower frequencies. The second mode of variability has a consistent spatial pattern of east-west asymmetry over the past 4 m.y. only; prior to 4 Ma, a different mode of spatial variability may have been present, possibly suggesting influence by closure of the Isthmus of Panama or other tectonic changes. The second mode of variability may indicate influence by CaCO3 dissolution. The second mode of variability is not highly coherent with insolation. Comparison of the modes of carbonate variability to a 4 m.y. record of benthic δ 1 8 indicates that although overall correlation between carbonate and δ 1 8 is low, both modes of variability in carbonate sedimentation are coherent with δ 1 8 changes at some frequencies. The first mode of carbonate variability is coherent with Sites 846/849 δ 1 8 at the dominant insolation periods, and the second mode is coherent at 100 k.y. during the last 2 m.y. The coherence between carbonate sedimentation and δ 1 8 in both EOF modes suggests that multiple uncorrelated modes of variability operated within the climate system during the late Neogene
Co-sputtered MoRe thin films for carbon nanotube growth-compatible superconducting coplanar resonators
Molybdenum rhenium alloy thin films can exhibit superconductivity up to
critical temperatures of . At the same time, the films are
highly stable in the high-temperature methane / hydrogen atmosphere typically
required to grow single wall carbon nanotubes. We characterize molybdenum
rhenium alloy films deposited via simultaneous sputtering from two sources,
with respect to their composition as function of sputter parameters and their
electronic dc as well as GHz properties at low temperature. Specific emphasis
is placed on the effect of the carbon nanotube growth conditions on the film.
Superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators are defined lithographically; we
demonstrate that the resonators remain functional when undergoing nanotube
growth conditions, and characterize their properties as function of
temperature. This paves the way for ultra-clean nanotube devices grown in situ
onto superconducting coplanar waveguide circuit elements.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
On the spectrum of Farey and Gauss maps
In this paper we introduce Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions given by
generalized Borel and Laplace transforms which are left invariant by the
transfer operators of the Farey map and its induced version, the Gauss map,
respectively. By means of a suitable operator-valued power series we are able
to study simultaneously the spectrum of both these operators along with the
analytic properties of the associated dynamical zeta functions.Comment: 23 page
Forming Disk Galaxies in Lambda CDM Simulations
We used fully cosmological, high resolution N-body + SPH simulations to
follow the formation of disk galaxies with rotational velocities between 135
and 270 km/sec in a Lambda CDM universe. The simulations include gas cooling,
star formation, the effects of a uniform UV background and a physically
motivated description of feedback from supernovae. The host dark matter halos
have a spin and last major merger redshift typical of galaxy sized halos as
measured in recent large scale N--Body simulations. The simulated galaxies form
rotationally supported disks with realistic exponential scale lengths and fall
on both the I-band and baryonic Tully Fisher relations. An extended stellar
disk forms inside the Milky Way sized halo immediately after the last major
merger. The combination of UV background and SN feedback drastically reduces
the number of visible satellites orbiting inside a Milky Way sized halo,
bringing it in fair agreement with observations. Our simulations predict that
the average age of a primary galaxy's stellar population decreases with mass,
because feedback delays star formation in less massive galaxies. Galaxies have
stellar masses and current star formation rates as a function of total mass
that are in good agreement with observational data. We discuss how both high
mass and force resolution and a realistic description of star formation and
feedback are important ingredients to match the observed properties of
galaxies.Comment: Revised version after the referee's comments. Conclusions unchanged.
