Nova Scorpii 1941 (V697 Sco): A Probable Intermediate Polar
V697 Sco, the remnant of Nova Scorpii 1941 and currently at V ~ 20.0, is
found from photometric observations to have the characteristics of an
intermediate polar (IP) with an orbital period (Porb) of 4.49 h and a rotation
period (Prot) of 3.31 h. It therefore appears to be a member of the rare class
of IPs where Prot ~ Porb, which are probably discless systems. The prominence
of the modulation at 0.5 Prot, and its orbital sidebands, indicates two-pole

Chlamydia muridarum infection differentially alters smooth muscle function in mouse uterine horn and cervix.
Chlamydia trachomatis infection is a primary cause of reproductive tract diseases including infertility. Previous studies showed that this infection alters physiological activities in mouse oviducts. Whether this occurs in the uterus and cervix has never been investigated. This study characterized the physiological activities of the uterine horn and the cervix in a Chlamydia muridarum (Cmu)-infected mouse model at three infection time points of 7, 14, and 21 days postinfection (dpi). Cmu infection significantly decreased contractile force of spontaneous contraction in the cervix (7 and 14 dpi; P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively), but this effect was not observed in the uterine horn. The responses of the uterine horn and cervix to oxytocin were significantly altered by Cmu infection at 7 dpi (P < 0.0001), but such responses were attenuated at 14 and 21 dpi. Cmu infection increased contractile force to prostaglandin (PGF2Ī±) by 53-83% in the uterine horn. This corresponded with the increased messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression of Ptgfr that encodes for its receptor. However, Cmu infection did not affect contractions of the uterine horn and cervix to PGE2 and histamine. The mRNA expression of Otr and Ptger4 was inversely correlated with the mRNA expression of Il1b, Il6 in the uterine horn of Cmu-inoculated mice (P < 0.01 to P < 0.001), suggesting that the changes in the Otr and Ptger4 mRNA expression might be linked to the changes in inflammatory cytokines. Lastly, this study also showed a novel physiological finding of the differential response to PGE2 in mouse uterine horn and cervix
Alkali metal for ultraviolet band-pass filter
An alkali metal filter having a layer of metallic bismuth deposited onto the alkali metal is provided. The metallic bismuth acts to stabilize the surface of the alkali metal to prevent substantial surface migration from occurring on the alkali metal, which may degrade optical characteristics of the filter. To this end, a layer of metallic bismuth is deposited by vapor deposition over the alkali metal to a depth of approximately 5 to 10 A. Micromechanical modelling of syntactic foam
A combined numerical-experimental method that enables accurate prediction of not only the elastic moduli and tensile failure strengths of syntactic foams, but also accounts for the experimentally observed scatter in these measurements is presented. In general, for the systems studied, an increase in microsphere content resulted in an increase in tensile modulus and a decrease in tensile strength. At low particle loading ratios, the variance in the measured experimental strength can be almost entirely attributed to the distribution of inter-particle distances between the microspheres, whilst at high particle loadings, geometric variance in the microstructure is shown to be only partially responsible for the observed scatter in strength data. Thus, for the first time, a direct link between the underlying microstructure and the experimentally observed scatter in fracture strength is drawn and substantiated with modelling
"Driven to distraction?" Children's experiences of car travel

Whilst there is a growing body of research considering how adults experience automobility, that is the increasingly central role of cars within societies, there has been little equivalent research exploring children's perspectives. Drawing upon a variety of methods including personal diaries, photographs, inādepth interviews and surveys amongst schools within Buckinghamshire and North London, the paper contributes to filling this gap in existing research through exploring how cars are not only journey spaces for children, but are also sites for play, relaxation, homework, companionship, technology and the consumption of commodities. Using a Foucauldian analysis of power, insights into wider familial processes relating to mobility are provided by exploring how cars are sites of conflicting power relations between parents and children. The paper also explores how children's everyday experiences of cars were framed by wider sets of power relations, including car corporations which design and manufacture these spaces, and the role of capital which commodifies everyday activities in cars. In doing so, the paper challenges existing research on automobility for only focusing upon adults' experiences of cars and begins to theorise a more inclusive account of automobility which incorporates children and young people
Beings in their own right? Exploring Children and young people's sibling and twin relationships in the Minority World
This paper examines the contributions that the sociological study of sibship and twinship in the Minority World can make to childhood studies. It argues that, in providing one forum within which to explore children and young people's social relationships, we can add to our understanding of children and young people's interdependence and develop a more nuanced understanding of agency. As emergent subjects, children, young people and adults are in a process of ābecomingā. However, this does not mean that they can ābecomeā anything they choose to. The notion of negotiated interdependence (Punch 2002) is useful in helping us to grasp the contingent nature of children and young people's agency
