    The ‘Molecule of the Month’ Website—An Extraordinary Chemistry Educational Resource Online for over 20 Years

    The Molecule of the Month website (http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/motm.htm) is an educational resource that is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Here we reflect on its pioneering role in promoting new technology for visualizing and presenting chemical information on the web, as well as its achievements, as a free educational resource, both as a teaching aid and as a multi-user, multi-author learning platform. We discuss the legal aspects of such sites, as well as issues around how to make the content permanent. Finally, we look forward to how such sites may evolve in the futur

    Psychophysical Tests of the Hypothesis of a Bottom-Up Saliency Map in Primary Visual Cortex

    A unique vertical bar among horizontal bars is salient and pops out perceptually. Physiological data have suggested that mechanisms in the primary visual cortex (V1) contribute to the high saliency of such a unique basic feature, but indicated little regarding whether V1 plays an essential or peripheral role in input-driven or bottom-up saliency. Meanwhile, a biologically based V1 model has suggested that V1 mechanisms can also explain bottom-up saliencies beyond the pop-out of basic features, such as the low saliency of a unique conjunction feature such as a red vertical bar among red horizontal and green vertical bars, under the hypothesis that the bottom-up saliency at any location is signaled by the activity of the most active cell responding to it regardless of the cell's preferred features such as color and orientation. The model can account for phenomena such as the difficulties in conjunction feature search, asymmetries in visual search, and how background irregularities affect ease of search. In this paper, we report nontrivial predictions from the V1 saliency hypothesis, and their psychophysical tests and confirmations. The prediction that most clearly distinguishes the V1 saliency hypothesis from other models is that task-irrelevant features could interfere in visual search or segmentation tasks which rely significantly on bottom-up saliency. For instance, irrelevant colors can interfere in an orientation-based task, and the presence of horizontal and vertical bars can impair performance in a task based on oblique bars. Furthermore, properties of the intracortical interactions and neural selectivities in V1 predict specific emergent phenomena associated with visual grouping. Our findings support the idea that a bottom-up saliency map can be at a lower visual area than traditionally expected, with implications for top-down selection mechanisms

    Seasonal Variations of Spodoptera frugiperda Host Plant Diversity and Parasitoid Complex in Southern and Central Benin

    Fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was recorded for the first time in 2016 attacking maize fields in central and west Africa. Soon after, several other regions and countries have reported the pest in almost the entire sub-Saharan Africa. In the present study, we assumed that (i) a variety of alternative plant species host FAW, especially during maize off-season, (ii) a wide range of local parasitoids have adapted to FAW and (iii) parasitoid species composition and abundance vary across seasons. During a two-year survey (from June 2018 to January 2020), parasitoids and alternative host plants were identified from maize and vegetable production sites, along streams and lowlands, on garbage dumps and old maize fields in southern and partly in the central part of Benin during both maize growing- and off-season. A total of eleven new host plant species were reported for the first time, including Cymbopogon citratus (de Candolle) Stapf (cultivated lemon grass), Bulbostylis coleotricha (A. Richard) Clarke and Pennisetum macrourum von Trinius (wild). The survey revealed seven parasitoid species belonging to four families, namely Platygastridae, Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, and Tachinidae associated with FAW on maize and alternative host plants. The most abundant parasitoid species across seasons was the egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Nixon) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae).     Experiences of living with chronic myeloid leukaemia and adhering to tyrosine kinase inhibitors: A thematic synthesis of qualitative studies

    Purpose: To investigate the experiences of adults living with chronic myeloid leukaemia and treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, with particular reference to factors influencing adherence. Methods: A thematic synthesis of all published qualitative studies examining adults with chronic myeloid leukaemia, receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Eligible publications were identified by searching five electronic databases using defined criteria. The synthesis involved complete coding of extracted data and inductive theme development. Results: Nine studies were included and three overarching themes defined. Overarching themes were: 1) Disease impacts whole life; 2) Disease management strategies; and 3) Valued aspects of care. Side-effects often required physical and psychological adaptation. Patients developed individual decision-making processes to promote adherence and manage side effects. Unintentional non-adherence occurred due to forgetfulness and system failures. Intentional omission also occurred, which together with side effects, was unlikely to be reported to healthcare professionals (HCPs). HCP reassurance about missed doses could reinforce non-adherence. Information needs varied over time and between individuals. Knowledge among patients about treatment was often lacking and could lead to misunderstandings. Patients valued psychological support from HCPs and suggested an individualised approach, facilitating discussion of symptoms, adherence and their perspectives about living with chronic myeloid leukaemia, would improve care. Conclusions: Patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia experienced significant side-effects from treatment and changes to their psychological and physical well-being. They developed their own strategies to manage their disease and treatment. This should be recognised in interventions to improve education, support and the delivery of care that is compassionate and adequately resourced

    Brassinosteroids participate in the control of basal and acquired freezing tolerance of plants

    Brassinosteroids (BRs) are growth-promoting plant hormones that play a role in abiotic stress responses, but molecular modes that enable this activity remain largely unknown. Here we show that BRs participate in the regulation of freezing tolerance. BR signaling-defective mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana were hypersensitive to freezing before and after cold acclimation. The constitutive activation of BR signaling, in contrast, enhanced freezing resistance. Evidence is provided that the BR-controlled basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor CESTA (CES) can contribute to the constitutive expression of the C-REPEAT/DEHYDRATION-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING FACTOR (CBF) transcriptional regulators that control cold responsive (COR) gene expression. In addition, CBF-independent classes of BR-regulated COR genes are identified that are regulated in a BR- and CES-dependent manner during cold acclimation. A model is presented in which BRs govern different cold-responsive transcriptional cascades through the posttranslational modification of CES and redundantly acting factors. This contributes to the basal resistance against freezing stress, but also to the further improvement of this resistance through cold acclimation

    A genome-wide scan for type 1 diabetes susceptibility genes in nuclear families with multiple affected siblings in Finland

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A genome-wide search for genes that predispose to type 1 diabetes using linkage analysis was performed using 900 microsatellite markers in 70 nuclear families with affected siblings from Finland, a population expected to be more genetically homogeneous than others, and having the highest incidence of type 1 diabetes in the world and, yet, the highest proportion in Europe of cases (10%) carrying neither of the highest risk <it>HLA </it>haplotypes that include DR3 or DR4 alleles.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In addition to the evidence of linkage to the <it>HLA </it>region on 6p21 (nominal p = 4.0 × 10<sup>-6</sup>), significant evidence of linkage in other chromosome regions was not detected with a single-locus analysis. The two-locus analysis conditional on the <it>HLA </it>gave a maximum lod score (MLS) of 3.1 (nominal p = 2 × 10<sup>-4</sup>) on chromosome 9p13 under an additive model; MLS of 2.1 (nominal p = 6.1 × 10<sup>-3</sup>) on chromosome 17p12 and MLS of 2.5 (nominal p = 2.9 × 10<sup>-3</sup>) on chromosome 18p11 under a general model.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our genome scan data confirmed the primary contribution of the <it>HLA </it>genes also in the high-risk Finnish population, and suggest that non-<it>HLA </it>genes also contribute to the familial clustering of type 1 diabetes in Finland.</p

    Pilot-in-the-Loop Evaluation of a Yaw Rate to Throttle Feedback Control with Enhanced Engine Response

    This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a yaw rate to throttle feedback system designed to replace a damaged rudder. It can act as a Dutch roll damper and as a means to facilitate pilot input for crosswind landings. Enhanced propulsion control modes were implemented to increase responsiveness and thrust level of the engine, which impact flight dynamics and performance. Piloted evaluations were performed to determine the capability of the engines to substitute for the rudder function under emergency conditions. The results showed that this type of implementation is beneficial, but the engines' capability to replace the rudder is limited
