The mass-concentration relation in massive galaxy clusters at redshift ~1
Mass and concentration of clusters of galaxies are related and evolving with
redshift. We study the properties of a sample of 31 massive galaxy clusters at
high redshift, 0.8 < z < 1.5, using weak and strong lensing observations.
Concentration is a steep function of mass, c_{200} ~M_{200}^{-0.83 +-0.39},
with higher-redshift clusters being less concentrated. Mass and concentration
from the stacked analysis, M_{200}=(4.1+-0.4)x10^{14}M_Sun/h and
c_{200}=2.3+-0.2, are in line with theoretical results extrapolated from the
local universe. Clusters with signs of dynamical activity preferentially
feature high concentrations. We discuss the possibility that the whole sample
is a mix of two different kinds of haloes. Over-concentrated clusters might be
accreting haloes out of equilibrium in a transient phase of compression,
whereas less concentrated ones might be more relaxed.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures; in press on MNRA
Catalytic fuel cell used as an analytical tool for methanol and ethanol determination. Application to ethanol determination in alcoholic beverages
A small direct catalytic methanol 'fuel cell' was used for analytical purposes. Three different formats were investigated for methanol and ethanol determination: two different Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) formats and a potentiostatic (i.e. amperometric) format; the latter was used if the current supplied by the cell was recorded. The measurement times using one or other of these three formats were much different. The time required by the potentiostatic format was more short for a suitable analytical measurement. The cell was used to check ethanol content in several commercial wine and beer samples and the possibility of using the fuel cell for the analytical measures in real samples, discussed. Lastly the results were compared with those obtained using two conventional amperometric enzyme sensors and statistical tests carried out. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Quasi-potentials of the entropy functionals for scalar conservation laws
We investigate the quasi-potential problem for the entropy cost functionals
of non-entropic solutions to scalar conservation laws with smooth fluxes. We
prove that the quasi-potentials coincide with the integral of a suitable
Einstein entropy.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
Single Bunch Instabilities in FCC-ee
FCC-ee is a high luminosity lepton collider with a centre-of-mass energy from 91 to 365 GeV. Due to the machine parameters and pipe dimensions, collective effects due to electromagnetic fields produced by the interaction of the beam with the vacuum chamber can be one of the main limitations to the machine performance. In this frame, an impedance model is required to analyze these instabilities and to find possible solutions for their mitigation. This paper will present the contributions of specific machine components to the total impedance budget and their effects on the beam stability. Single bunch instability thresholds will be estimated in both transverse and longitudinal planes
CARTHOGRAPHY 2.0: PARTICIPATIVE OR ‘EXCLUSIVE’? SOME REMARKS ON THIS SPECIAL ISSUE
The world of Web Mapping is a very heterogeneous one and this Bulletin represents
a sign of this. Several themes are investigated here by various authors, from the influences
in imaging the real world to the main cartographic criticism in the realizing
maps on the web. Expertise and digital divide seem making cartography 2.0 like an
'exclusive' subject. But the massive diffusion of the applications connected to the
ICT and its economical implications give a new opportunity to geography
Land use changes, human activities (deforestation, agriculture, urban sprawl, ecc.) and abnormal weather events are the common reasons of hydrological problems like floods or landslides. Neglecting the terraced landscape, for example, reduced several times the drainage capacity of the water network surface, increasing the hydrological risks. In this paper we study terraced agricultural system of two villages (Prosecco and Contovello) near Trieste. First at all, we gave a detailed description of this rural landscape. Then, we applied a GIS analysis in order to evaluate main changes in the last forty years, overlaying not homogeneous cartography sources (aerial IGM photos of the 1974 and current ortophotos). So, we identified neglecting processes and reforestation dynamics of this terraced landscape. In a restyling perspective, we identified main local tourist attractions. Finally, we hypothesized a pathway aimed at sustainable tourism
Alternative o necessarie?
fornire alcune indicazioni in merito all’attuale situazione
delle fonti energetiche rinnovabili (FER) nel contesto
europeo ed italiano. Viene proposta una disamina del
contributo delle FER tradizionali (idroelettrico e geotermico)
ed emergenti (eolico, fotovoltaico e biomasse)
al comparto energetico (elettrico e termico). Vengono
limite generalmente lamentato è relativo all'accuratezza geometrica.
The relevance of the sign in the historical maps is generally recognized, however the
geometric accuracy usually represents the main limit for these maps. So it’s essential
to understand their distortion degree in order to introduce them in a GIS environment
to study main geographic processes involving a region. In this paper we analyzed several
ancient maps, carried out between 1500 and 1700 for the Trieste Gulf area
(Northeast of Italy). We applied software, free downloadable from Internet, named
MapAnalyst (developed from Institute of Cartography, ETH Zurich). Using pairs of
control points on an old map and on a new reference, we compute distortion grid and
other type of visualizations to understand accuracy and distortions of these old maps
Tools for an active cartography: the balloon mapping. First results in a research at Trieste (North-Eastern of Italy)
Limiti e potenzialità in un progetto di ricerca a Trieste = Tools for an active cartography: the balloon mapping.
Low-cost aerial imaging techniques, using balloons and kites give
us detailed and updated maps, represents a new opportunity in the
archeological studies. In a research projectof the Department of Humanistic Studies(University of Trieste),we intend to test its limits and
possibilities. The Trieste Karst (north-eastern of Italy) is rich in Bronze
Age-Iron hill forts, locally called castellieri. In this paper we analyze
a map regarding the castelliere of Monte d'Oro (Caresana, close to
the city of Trieste),the first results of this research. Combining in MapKnitter (an open source software created by Public Lab) the high resolution images acquired by a simple plastic balloon (inflated with helium gas), we obtained the map now available on http://mapknitter.org/maps/sito-archeo-caresana. In order to understand its distortion
degree, we used MapAnalyst (a software for the accuracy analysis
of old maps) that confirms problems in overlapping too much small images. Height too low of the balloon, resulting images too small, cost of the helium and wind conditions represent the main limits of this research, but new opportunities are giving by the potential long
time (a day) of the balloon's flight
