The most relevant and recent literature findings linking exposure to sunlight, Vitamin D (VD), inflammation and immune system in health and disease, are reviewed. Reduced sunlight exposure determined hypo-vitaminosis D to be common among patients or even healthy subjects, especially at higher latitudes. Numerous studies support the hypothesis that VD insufficiency could contribute to the higher autoimmune diseases incidence in the same geographic areas. In the present review, the ways in which VD was reported to influence immune system, contributing to organism homeostasis or disease development are addressed. In fact, some of the hormone activities were recognised to determine stimulation or inhibition of immune system components. Several diseases, where an association with VD deficiency was studied, are summarised. Finally, the rationale for optimization of substitutive/additive therapy with VD analogues and the last innovations regarding these drugs are mentioned

Regional Policies For Social Housing. An experience in Regione Calabria

Social housing is again a dynamic sector of construction. European «cohesion» and «convergence» programs aim to promote Mediterranean housing in order to improve competitiveness, innovation and employment in under-developed regions. The whole SH planning and implementing process implies criticalities that often damage local initiatives. This study of the Calabria Case has pointed out that both public and private entrepreneurs perceive the cumbersome requirements and procedures as ‘unfriendly’ and tend to renounce the incentives. Process management information instruments together with simpler evaluation and certification systems seem to encourage suitable and flexible solutions, reliable results as well as transparency and quality of action

An Evaluation of the Scarring Effect in Argentina

This study assesses the short-term effect of shifting from unemployment on wages and the subsequent employment. The so-called scarring effect has not been studied previously in Latin America and in particular in Argentina. Exploiting the rotational design of the household survey we estimate the size of the wage penalty, and the increase in the probability of entering informality, after being unemployed. Two estimation strategies are used. First, the linear model for panel data with fixed and random effects; second, the difference in difference estimator with propensity scores matching. We show that being unemployed raises the short run probability of becoming an informal worker, but its influence on wages -once controlling for the type of occupation- is not significant.Fil: Beccaria, Luis Alberto. Latin America experienced a period of economic growth since 2003 which, together with the implementation of labor and social policies, had a positive impact on the working and living conditions of the population. This paper analyzes the intensity of the income fluctuations in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Peru during the 2000s. The total mobility is broken down between increases and reductions in family income. Likewise, the different sources of these movements are analyzed since they can be the result of variations in remunerations, changes in the occupational status of members or experienced by non-labor incomes. Objective Assessment of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) correlations with clinical parameters and evaluation of the efficacy of standard oral supplementation in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Methods 154 SSc patients were recruited, in all seasons. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were evaluated using LIAISON 25-OH (Diasorin, Italy). Medsger disease severity scale (DSS), nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) and all instrumental exam contemplated by international guidelines were performed. Drug assumption, including oral colecalciferol, was evaluated. Nonparametric tests were used for statistical analysis. Results Average 25(OH)D serum concentration was 18.7 \ub19 ng/ml (<20 classified as deficiency). A significant correlation was found with presence/absence of lung bi-basal fibrotic changes (16.1 \ub18 ng/ml and 20 \ub110 ng/ml, respectively; p = 0.04). Peripheral vascular (p = 0.03), kidney (p = 0.02), gastrointestinal (p = 0.05) Medsger\u2019s DSS parameters were found to correlate with 25(OH)D serum concentrations. No significant correlations were observed with digital ulcers incidence, strictly correlated to patterns of microangiopathy, defined at NVC analysis (p<0.0001). Interestingly, no effects of treatment with oral colecalciferol (Dibase 1,000 IU daily for at least 6 months) were found on 25(OH)D serum concentrations in treated (18.8 \ub110 ng/ml) or untreated (18.7 \ub19 ng/ml) SSc patients (p = 0.81). A significant difference was observed among seasonal 25(OH)D serum concentrations (winter: 14.6 \ub17.8 ng/ ml, spring: 17.2 \ub17.9 ng/ml, summer: 21.43 \ub110 ng/ml, autumn: 20.2 \ub110 ng/ml; p = 0.032) in all patients. Conclusion Serum 25(OH)D deficiency was found to correlate with lung involvement, peripheral vascular, kidney and gastrointestinal Medsger\u2019s DSS parameters and with seasonality In SSc patients. Supplementation with oral colecalciferol was found not effective in increasing 25 (OH)D serum concentrations. Therefore, for successful replacement, supra-physiological vitamin D3 doses or programmed UVB light exposure should be tested

Anti-proliferative effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. extract on human melanoma A375 cells

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) has been used since ancient times in traditional medicine, while nowadays various rosemary formulations are increasingly exploited by alternative medicine to cure or prevent a wide range of health disorders. Rosemary's bioproperties have prompted scientific investigation, which allowed us to ascertain antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytostatic, and cytotoxic activities of crude extracts or of pure components. Although there is a growing body of experimental work, information about rosemary's anticancer properties, such as chemoprotective or anti-proliferative effects on cancer cells, is very poor, especially concerning the mechanism of action. Melanoma is a skin tumor whose diffusion is rapidly increasing in the world and whose malignancy is reinforced by its high resistance to cytotoxic agents; hence the availability of new cytotoxic drugs would be very helpful to improve melanoma prognosis. Here we report on the effect of a rosemary hydroalcoholic extract on the viability of the human melanoma A375 cell line. Main components of rosemary extract were identified by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/ESI-MS/MS) and the effect of the crude extract or of pure components on the proliferation of cancer cells was tested by MTT and Trypan blue assays. The effect on cell cycle was investigated by using flow cytometry, and the alteration of the cellular redox state was evaluated by intracellular ROS levels and protein carbonylation analysis. Furthermore, in order to get information about the molecular mechanisms of cytotoxicity, a comparative proteomic investigation was performed

Background: The National Research Council (CNR) prostate cancer monitoring project in Italy (Pros-IT CNR) is an observational, prospective, ongoing, multicentre study aiming to monitor a sample of Italian males diagnosed as new cases of prostate cancer. The present study aims to present data on the quality of life at time prostate cancer is diagnosed. Methods: One thousand seven hundred five patients were enrolled. Quality of life is evaluated at the time cancer was diagnosed and at subsequent assessments via the Italian version of the University of California Los Angeles-Prostate Cancer Index (UCLA-PCI) and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12). Results: At diagnosis, lower scores on the physical component of the SF-12 were associated to older ages, obesity and the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities. Lower scores on the mental component were associated to younger ages, the presence of 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities and a T-score higher than one. Urinary and bowel functions according to UCLA-PCI were generally good. Almost 5% of the sample reported using at least one safety pad daily to control urinary loss; less than 3% reported moderate/severe problems attributable to bowel functions, and sexual function was a moderate/severe problem for 26.7%. Diabetes, 3+ moderate/severe comorbidities, T2 or T3-T4 categories and a Gleason score of eight or more were significantly associated with lower sexual function scores at diagnosis. Conclusions: Data collected by the Pros-IT CNR study have clarified the baseline status of newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients. A comprehensive assessment of quality of life will allow to objectively evaluate outcomes of different profile of care
