    Homophily and Long-Run Integration in Social Networks

    We model network formation when heterogeneous nodes enter sequentially and form connections through both random meetings and network-based search, but with type-dependent biases. We show that there is "long-run integration," whereby the composition of types in sufficiently old nodes' neighborhoods approaches the global type distribution, provided that the network-based search is unbiased. However, younger nodes' connections still reflect the biased meetings process. We derive the type-based degree distributions and group-level homophily patterns when there are two types and location-based biases. Finally, we illustrate aspects of the model with an empirical application to data on citations in physics journals.Comment: 39 pages, 2 figure

    High-Grade Prostate Cancer: Favorable Results in the Modern Era Regardless of Initial Treatment

    Purpose. We performed a retrospective study to determine the outcome of a modern cohort of patients with high-grade (Gleason score ≄ 8) prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, or hormone therapy. Methods. We identified 404 patients in the South Texas Veteran's Healthcare System Tumor Registry diagnosed with high grade prostate cancer between 1998 and 2008. Mean follow-up was 4.62 ± 2.61 years. End points were biochemical failure-free survival, overall survival, metastasis-free survival, and cancer-specific survival. Results. 5-year overall survival for patients undergoing radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy was 88.9%, 76.3%, and 58.9%, respectively. 5-year metastasis-free survival for patients undergoing radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy was 96.8%, 96.6%, and 88.4%, respectively, and 5-year cancer-specific survival was 97.2%, 100%, and 89.9%, respectively. Patients with a Gleason score of 10 and pretreatment prostate-specific antigen > 20 ng/mL had decreased 5-year biochemical failure-free and cancer-specific survival. Patients with a pretreatment prostate-specific antigen > 20 ng/mL had decreased 5-year overall survival. Discussion. Even for patients with high-grade disease, the outcome is not as dire in the modern era regardless of primary treatment modality chosen. While there is room for improvement, we should not have a nihilistic impression of how these patients will respond to treatment

    Integration of physical and genetic maps of common bean through BAC-derived microsatellite markers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Common bean (<it>Phaseolus vulgaris </it>L.) is the most important legume for direct human consumption and the goal of this study was to integrate a recently constructed physical map for the species with a microsatellite based genetic map using a BAC library from the genotype G19833 and the recombinant inbred line population DOR364 × G19833.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We searched for simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in the 89,017 BAC-end sequences (BES) from the physical map and genetically mapped any polymorphic BES-SSRs onto the genetic map. Among the BES it was possible to identify 623 contig-linked SSRs, most of which were highly AT-rich. A subgroup of 230 di-nucleotide and tri-nucleotide based SSR primer pairs from these BACs was tested on the mapping parents with 176 single copy loci and 114 found to be polymorphic markers. Of these, 99 were successfully integrated into the genetic map. The 99 linkages between the genetic and physical maps corresponded to an equal number of contigs containing a total of 5,055 BAC clones.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Class II microsatellites were more common in the BES than longer class I microsatellites. Both types of markers proved to be valuable for linking BAC clones to the genetic map and were successfully placed across all 11 linkage groups. The integration of common bean physical and genetic maps is an important part of comparative genome analysis and a prelude to positional cloning of agronomically important genes for this crop.</p

    Endogenous networks and international cooperation

    The rise of social network analyses in the social sciences has allowed empirical work to better account for interdependencies among actors and among their actions. However, this work has been, to a large extent, descriptive: it has treated these actions as exogenous and immutable. In many cases these networks describe actions like alliance formation or trade phenomena that are the outcome variables for programs of social scientific research. In this paper, I attempt to account for both interdependencies and the endogenous nature of networks by incorporating formal theory; helping answer the question of how these networks arise by looking at the incentives of actors to form links with each other. I discuss the appropriate solution concept for a network formation game, and present an algorithm for finding the equilibrium of these networks computationally as well as ways to compare the theoretical networks to observed ones in order to evaluate the fit of the theory. I apply these methods to the study of international cooperation a subject where both the interdependencies and purposive nature of actors must be accounted for. The theoretical network is able to reproduce a number of important observed characteristics. Still, there are more factors that must be accounted for if we want to understand how the network of international cooperation is formed

    A quantitative morphospace of multicellular organ design in the plant Arabidopsis

    Organ function emerges from the interactions between their constituent cells. The investigation of cellular organization can provide insight into organ function following structure-function relationships. Here, we investigate the extent to which properties in cellular organization can arise "for free" as an emergent property of embedding cells in space versus those that are actively generated by patterning processes. Default cellular configurations were established using three-dimensional (3D) digital tissue models. Network-based analysis of these synthetic cellular assemblies established a quantitative topological baseline of cellular organization, granted by virtue of passive spatial packing and the minimal amount of order that emerges for free in tessellated tissues. A 3D cellular-resolution digital tissue atlas for the model plant species Arabidopsis was generated, and the extent to which the organs in this organism conform to the default configurations was established through statistical comparisons with digital tissue models. Cells in different tissues of Arabidopsis do not conform to random packing arrangements to varying degrees. Most closely matching the random models was the undifferentiated shoot apical meristem (SAM) from which aerial organs emanate. By contrast, leaf and sepal tissue showed the greatest deviation from this baseline, suggesting these to be the most "complex" tissues in Arabidopsis. Investigation of the patterning principles responsible for the gap between these tissues and default patterns revealed cell elongation and the introduction of air spaces to contribute toward additional organ patterning complexity. This work establishes a quantitative morphospace to understand the principles of organ construction and its diversity within a single organism

    ASPOD modifications of 1993-1994

    ASPOD, Autonomous Space Processors for Orbital Debris, provides a unique way of collecting the space debris that has built up over the past 37 years. For the past several years, ASPOD has gone through several different modifications. This year's concentrations were on the solar cutting array, the solar tracker, the earth based main frame/tilt table, the controls for the two robotic arms, and accurate autocad drawings of ASPOD. This final report contains the reports written by the students who worked on the ASPOD project this year

    The Relationship Between Landing Mechanics and Injury Risk in Women\u27s Collegiate Soccer Players

    Mechanical performance in landing related tasks has been suggested to be related to injury in athletic. PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigations was to assess relationships which may exist between performance in landing mechanics and injury rates throughout a women’s NCAA Division II Collegiate Soccer season. METHODS: Twenty-eight women (age 19.7±1.6 yrs, height 1.6±0.5 m, mass 63.4±7.9 kg) were assessed using the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) test prior to a competitive season. Injury rates, types, and time lost from participation were tracked throughout the season. Injury information was coded and categorized each week in the following: acute vs. chronic; soft vs. hard tissue; upper vs. lower body; specific anatomical location; contact vs. non-contact; week of injury occurrence; practice days missed from injury; and games missed from injury. Association was measured via a Spearman\u27s rank correlation coefficient and a stepwise linear regression was performed for any variables which showed significant correlation to determine predictive relationships which may exist. The LESS test was evaluated independently by multiple raters and inter-rater reliability was high (ICC=0.824, 95% CI upper and lower = 0.917-0.657, p=0.001). Statistical significance was set a priori at p≀0.05. RESULTS: No significant correlations were determined between LESS test performance and injury and the LESS score did not add strength of association to any predictive variables. DISCUSSION: The main finding of this investigation is that performance on the LESS test did not show significant association with injury rates in women’s collegiate soccer players. LESS test performance has previously been suggested to be a valid and reliable clinical assessment tool, and claims have been made regarding its utility as a screening tool for identification of persons who may be at risk for subsequent injury. Landing mechanics may still be a valid predictor of injury risk. However, the results of our investigation do not support the use of the LESS test as a screening tool for injury risk in women’s collegiate soccer athletes
