Sustainable Case Study: United States Steel Corporation

    Get PDF
Overall, the North American Steel Industry has made significant strides to protect our environment and preserve our resources by: reducing overall energy consumption per ton of steel by 29% since 1990; reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (including CO2) by more than 25% from 1994 thru 2003; reducing air toxics volumes by more than 70% from 1994 thru 2003, and total air & water discharges by 69%; collecting and reusing of steel making by products such as: slag for road building, railroad ballasts, fertilizer, glassmaking, & other applications; coke oven & steel making gases for fuel/heat generation; increased steel manufacturing efficiencies now result in the production of 100 units of steel from 114 units of raw steel vs. 140 units previously, which has resulted in a yield improvement of 16% to 87% from 71%. These statistics indicate that the industry is doing an efficient job improving the environment in such a short span of time. Recently, United States Steel Corporation has been taking strides to improving sustainability within its corporation. Originally, U.S. Steel has always been a company that prides itself on good business practices. Today, they are taking further steps by incorporating sustainable measures to fit the trend developing in society. This is a study devoted to evaluating U.S. Steel’s current successes and failures regarding their recent sustainability practices

Ornithodiplostomum spp. metacercariae in fathead minnows : migration, site selection, and host response

x, 125 leaves : ill. ; 29 cm.Site selection, and the means to access specific sites, is a keystone of parasitology. I evaluated migration and site selection behaviours of metacercariae of two congeneric species of strigeoid trematode throughout growth and encystment phases in the fathead minnow. Results showed that pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum ptychocheilus migrate along specific neural tracts to access sites in the optic lobes of the brain. Conversely, pre-encystment stages of Ornithodiplostomum sp. migrate via direct penetration, or via the vascular system to access visceral organs, especially the liver. Remarkably, both species have a bi-phasic pattern of development, with growth and encystment occurring in unique sites. Finally, I examined patterns of rodlet cell proliferation and maturation in response to growth and encystment phases of O. ptychocheilus. Cell densities were low (<11/mm2) in brain tissue adjacent to 1 and 2 week old metacercaria, but peaked to approximately 210/mm2 at 6 weeks. These results shed new light on the potential function of these enigmatic cells

Dissociation dynamics of host-guest interaction between substituted calix[4]-arene and 4-chloronitrobenzene

    Get PDF
The inclusion complexation of upper rim substituted calix[4]arene with neutral 4-chloronitrobenzene has been studied by quantum-chemical and spectrophotometric measurements. The effect of varying temperature on the formation versus dissociation of the host-guest complex has been investigated. The formation of stable host-guest complexes is determined using DFT/B3LYP/6-311G(d) level of theory. The p-p interaction based dissociation dynamics of the host-guest complex has been studied. In the host-guest interaction, a 1:1 complex stoichiometry is observed. The low activation energy of dissociation, obtained from the MD simulations, indicates that the complex formation equilibrium is thermodynamically controlled

Regulation of the host immune system by helminth parasites

    Get PDF
Helminth parasite infections are associated with a battery of immunomodulatory mechanisms, which impact all facets of the host immune response to ensure their persistence within the host. This broad-spectrum modulation of host immunity has intended and unintended consequences, both advantageous and disadvantageous. Thus the host may benefit from suppression of collateral damage during parasite infection, and from reduced allergic, autoimmune and inflammatory reactions. However, helminth infection can also be detrimental in reducing vaccine responses, increasing susceptibility to co-infection, and potentially reducing tumor immunosurveillance. In this review we will summarize the panoply of immunomodulatory mechanisms used by helminths, their potential utility in human disease, and prospective areas of future research

Teaching a Business Honors Course on China

This paper describes an honors course on China taught over several years with evolving overarching topics. The objective of the course was to explore the economic and developmental path China has taken to engage with the world. Readings included current authors who have experienced life in China. Emphasis was placed on student-led discussion, writing, critical thinking, and oral presentation about the country and its emergence to interact with the rest of the world
