    Effect of polymer emulsion of the bearing capacity of Aeolian sand under extreme confinement conditions

    An experimental investigation, aimed at evaluating the improvement of Aeolian sand (from Saudi Arabia) when treated with low dosages of a vinyl acrylic (a polymer emulsion), is reported in this paper. Special attention is devoted to the influence of the lateral confinement, particularly in terms of compaction and bearing capacity (represented by CBR), for which a modification of the standard test has been developed trying to simulate extreme confinement conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this kind of chemical stabilizers can be considered as a suitable alternative for these materials. The main modifications induced in the sand by this additive are highlighted and quantified by means of the modification achieved for different geotechnical properties as well as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) analyses

    The influence of coastal processes on inner shelf sediment distribution : the Eastern Algarve Shelf (Southern Portugal)

    This study examines sediment distribution patterns in the Southeastern Algarve inner shelf (southern Portugal), an area characterized by marked variations in its coastal environment and low continental supply of sediments. The specific goals of this study were to identify the principal sediment sources and the factors influencing sediment transport paths and deposition. A total of 199 samples, collected along the shelf from the Guadiana River mouth to Olhos de Água, were analyzed. Grain-size distribution and parameters were measured for all the samples. Terrigenous and biogenic components of sand were identified in 38 samples, and results analyzed using multivariate non-linear multidimension scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis. Patterns of sediment distribution in this area of the inner shelf vary according to water depth and exhibit significant longshore variation, related mainly to coastal processes (littoral drift and storm currents) and to a lower degree to sediment sources. Sand is dominant at all depths, reflecting the influence of littoral drift in the supply and redistribution of shelf sediments. Fine and gravelsized deposits are significant in specific areas and are usually associated with changes in sediment composition. Five sectors have been identified according to sedimentary dynamics. The results, based on geostatistical and multivariate analysis, have allowed detailed sediment distribution maps to be generated, which represent an update of the existing cartography and serve as a tool for the management of coastal and marine resources. They have been furthermore compared with inner shelf sediment dynamics in other regions worldwide, to distinguish between specific regional responses to forcing mechanisms and processes that are more generalized within this type of shelf environments.     Accuracy of DXA in estimating body composition changes in elite athletes using a four compartment model as the reference method

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provides an affordable and practical assessment of multiple whole body and regional body composition. However, little information is available on the assessment of changes in body composition in top-level athletes using DXA. The present study aimed to assess the accuracy of DXA in tracking body composition changes (relative fat mass [%FM], absolute fat mass [FM], and fat-free mass [FFM]) of elite male judo athletes from a period of weight stability to prior to a competition, compared to a four compartment model (4C model), as the criterion method.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 27 elite male judo athletes (age, 22.2 ± 2.8 yrs) athletes were evaluated. Measures of body volume by air displacement plethysmography, bone mineral content assessed by DXA, and total-body water assessed by deuterium dilution were used in a 4C model. Statistical analyses included examination of the coefficient of determinant (r<sup>2</sup>), standard error of estimation (SEE), slope, intercept, and agreement between models.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At a group level analysis, changes in %FM, FM, and FFM estimates by DXA were not significantly different from those by the 4C model. Though the regression between DXA and the 4C model did not differ from the line of identity DXA %FM, FM, and FFM changes only explained 29%, 36%, and 38% of the 4C reference values, respectively. Individual results showed that the 95% limits of agreement were -3.7 to 5.3 for %FM, -2.6 to 3.7 for FM, and -3.7 to 2.7 for FFM. The relation between the difference and the mean of the methods indicated a significant trend for %FM and FM changes with DXA overestimating at the lower ends and underestimating at the upper ends of FM changes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our data indicate that both at group and individual levels DXA did not present an expected accuracy in tracking changes in adiposity in elite male judo athletes.</p

    The Impact of Temperature Fluctuations on the Lyman-alpha Forest Power Spectrum

    We explore the impact of spatial fluctuations in the intergalactic medium temperature on the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum near z ~ 3. We develop a semianalytic model to examine temperature fluctuations resulting from inhomogeneous HI and incomplete HeII reionizations. Detection of these fluctuations might provide insight into the reionization histories of hydrogen and helium. Furthermore, these fluctuations, neglected in previous analyses, could bias constraints on cosmological parameters from the Lyman-alpha forest. We find that the temperature fluctuations resulting from inhomogeneous HI reionization are likely to be very small, with an rms amplitude of < 5%, σT0/<0.05\sigma_{T_0}/ < 0.05. More important are the temperature fluctuations that arise from incomplete HeII reionization, which might plausibly be as large as 50%, σT0/ 0.5\sigma_{T_0}/ ~ 0.5. In practice, however, these temperature fluctuations have only a small effect on flux power spectrum predictions. The smallness of the effect is possibly due to density fluctuations dominating over temperature fluctuations on the scales probed by current measurements. On the largest scales currently probed, k ~ 0.001 s/km (~0.1 h/Mpc), the effect on the flux power spectrum may be as large as ~10% in extreme models. The effect is larger on small scales, up to ~20% at k = 0.1 s/km, due to thermal broadening. Our results suggest that the omission of temperature fluctuations effects from previous analyses does not significantly bias constraints on cosmological parameters.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, ApJ accepte
