Critical velocity for a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate flowing through a barrier
We consider the setup employed in a recent experiment (Ramanathan et al 2011
Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 130401) devoted to the study of the instability of the
superfluid flow of a toroidal Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of a
repulsive optical barrier. Using the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field equation, we
observe, consistently with what we found in Piazza et al (2009 Phys. Rev. A 80
021601), that the superflow with one unit of angular momentum becomes unstable
at a critical strength of the barrier, and decays through the mechanism of
phase slippage performed by pairs of vortex-antivortex lines annihilating.
While this picture qualitatively agrees with the experimental findings, the
measured critical barrier height is not very well reproduced by the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation, indicating that thermal fluctuations can play an
important role (Mathey et al 2012 arXiv:1207.0501). As an alternative
explanation of the discrepancy, we consider the effect of the finite resolution
of the imaging system. At the critical point, the superfluid velocity in the
vicinity of the obstacle is always of the order of the sound speed in that
region, . In particular, in the hydrodynamic regime
(not reached in the above experiment), the critical point is determined by
applying the Landau criterion inside the barrier region. On the other hand, the
Feynman critical velocity is much lower than the observed critical
velocity. We argue that this is a general feature of the Gross-Pitaevskii
equation, where we have with being a
small parameter of the model. Given these observations, the question still
remains open about the nature of the superfluid instability.Comment: Extended versio

FlyRNAi (http://www.flyrnai.org), the database and website of the Drosophila RNAi Screening Center (DRSC) at Harvard Medical School, serves a dual role, tracking both production of reagents for RNA interference (RNAi) screening in Drosophila cells and RNAi screen results. The database and website is used as a platform for community availability of protocols, tools, and other resources useful to researchers planning, conducting, analyzing or interpreting the results of Drosophila RNAi screens. Based on our own experience and user feedback, we have made several changes. Specifically, we have restructured the database to accommodate new types of reagents; added information about new RNAi libraries and other reagents; updated the user interface and website; and added new tools of use to the Drosophila community and others. Overall, the result is a more useful, flexible and comprehensive website and database

A novel 3D imaging system for strawberry phenotyping
Accurate and quantitative phenotypic data in plant breeding programmes is vital in breeding to assess the performance of genotypes and to make selections. Traditional strawberry phenotyping relies on the human eye to assess most external fruit quality attributes, which is time-consuming and subjective. 3D imaging is a promising high-throughput technique that allows multiple external fruit quality attributes to be measured simultaneously. A low cost multi-view stereo (MVS) imaging system was developed, which captured data from 360° around a target strawberry fruit. A 3D point cloud of the sample was derived and analysed with custom-developed software to estimate berry height, length, width, volume, calyx size, colour and achene number. Analysis of these traits in 100 fruits showed good concordance with manual assessment methods. This study demonstrates the feasibility of an MVS based 3D imaging system for the rapid and quantitative phenotyping of seven agronomically important external strawberry traits. With further improvement, this method could be applied in strawberry breeding programmes as a cost effective phenotyping technique
Benzofuran-fused Phosphole: Synthesis, Electronic, and Electroluminescence Properties
International audienceA synthetic route to novel benzofuran-fused phosphole derivatives 3-5 is described. These compounds showed optical and electrochemical properties that differ from their benzothiophene analog. Preliminary results show that 4 can be used as an emitter in OLEDs, illustrating the potential of these new compounds for opto-electronic applications
Cancer Appetite and Symptom Questionnaire (CASQ) for Brazilian Patients: Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Validation Study
Background
Appetite and symptoms, conditions generally reported by the patients with cancer, are
somewhat challenging for professionals to measure directly in clinical routine (latent conditions).
Therefore, specific instruments are required for this purpose. This study aimed to perform
a cultural adaptation of the Cancer Appetite and Symptom Questionnaire (CASQ), into
Portuguese and evaluate its psychometric properties on a sample of Brazilian cancer
patients.
Methods
This is a validation study with Brazilian cancer patients. The face, content, and construct
(factorial and convergent) validities of the Cancer Appetite and Symptom Questionnaire,
the study tool, were estimated. Further, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted.
The ratio of chi-square and degrees of freedom (χ2
/df), comparative fit index (CFI),
goodness of fit index (GFI) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) were
used for fit model assessment. In addition, the reliability of the instrument was estimated
using the composite reliability (CR) and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (α), and the invariance
of the model in independent samples was estimated by a multigroup analysis (Δχ2).
Results
Participants included 1,140 cancer patients with a mean age of 53.95 (SD = 13.25) years;
61.3% were women. After the CFA of the original CASQ structure, 2 items with inadequate
factor weights were removed. Four correlations between errors were included to provide
adequate fit to the sample (χ2
/df = 8.532, CFI = .94, GFI = .95, and RMSEA = .08). Themodel exhibited a low convergent validity (AVE = .32). The reliability was adequate
(CR = .82 α = .82). The refined model showed strong invariance in two independent samples
(Δχ2
: λ: p = .855; i: p = .824; Res: p = .390). A weak stability was obtained between
patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy (Δχ2
: λ: p = .155; i: p < .001; Res:
p < .001), and between patients undergoing chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy
and palliative care (Δχ2
: λ: p = .058; i: p < .001; Res: p < .001).
Conclusion
The Portuguese version of the CASQ had good face and construct validity and reliability.
However, the CASQ still presented invariance in independent samples of Brazilian patients
with cancer. However, the tool has low convergent validity and weak invariance in samples
with different treatment
Stability and Hydrolyzation of Metal Organic Frameworks with Paddle-Wheel SBUs upon Hydration
Instability of most prototypical metal organic frameworks (MOFs) in the
presence of moisture is always a limita- tion for industrial scale development.
In this work, we examine the dissociation mechanism of microporous paddle wheel
frameworks M(bdc)(ted)0.5 [M=Cu, Zn, Ni, Co; bdc= 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate;
ted= triethylenediamine] in controlled humidity environments. Combined in-situ
IR spectroscopy, Raman, and Powder x-ray diffraction measurements show that the
stability and modification of isostructual M(bdc)(ted)0.5 compounds upon
exposure to water vapor critically depend on the central metal ion. A
hydrolysis reaction of water molecules with Cu-O-C is observed in the case of
Cu(bdc)(ted)0.5. Displacement reactions of ted linkers by water molecules are
identified with Zn(bdc)(ted)0.5 and Co(bdc)(ted)0.5. In contrast,.
Ni(bdc)(ted)0.5 is less suscept- ible to reaction with water vapors than the
other three compounds. In addition, the condensation of water vapors into the
framework is necessary to initiate the dissociation reaction. These findings,
supported by supported by first principles theoretical van der Waals density
functional (vdW-DF) calculations of overall reaction enthalpies, provide the
necessary information for de- termining operation conditions of this class of
MOFs with paddle wheel secondary building units and guidance for developing
more robust units
Treatment of MOG-IgG-associated disorder with rituximab: An international study of 121 patients
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of anti-CD20 B-cell depletion with rituximab (RTX) on relapse rates in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disorder (MOGAD). METHODS: Retrospective review of RTX-treated MOGAD patients from 29 centres in 13 countries. The primary outcome measure was change in relapse rate after starting rituximab (Poisson regression model). RESULTS: Data on 121 patients were analysed, including 30 (24.8%) children. Twenty/121 (16.5%) were treated after one attack, of whom 14/20 (70.0%) remained relapse-free after median (IQR) 11.2 (6.3-14.1) months. The remainder (101/121, 83.5%) were treated after two or more attacks, of whom 53/101 (52.5%) remained relapse-free after median 12.1 (6.3-24.9) months. In this 'relapsing group', relapse rate declined by 37% (95%CI=19-52%, p<0.001) overall, 63% (95%CI=35-79%, p = 0.001) when RTX was used first line (n = 47), and 26% (95%CI=2-44%, p = 0.038) when used after other steroid-sparing immunotherapies (n = 54). Predicted 1-year and 2-year relapse-free survival was 79% and 55% for first-line RTX therapy, and 38% and 18% for second-/third-line therapy. Circulating CD19+B-cells were suppressed to <1% of total circulating lymphocyte population at the time of 45/57 (78.9%) relapses. CONCLUSION: RTX reduced relapse rates in MOGAD. However, many patients continued to relapse despite apparent B-cell depletion. Prospective controlled studies are needed to validate these results
