    Spectroscopy of High-Redshift Supernovae from the ESSENCE Project: The First Four Years

    We present the results of spectroscopic observations from the ESSENCE high-redshift supernova (SN) survey during its first four years of operation. This sample includes spectra of all SNe Ia whose light curves were presented by Miknaitis et al. (2007) and used in the cosmological analyses of Davis et al. (2007) and Wood-Vasey et al. (2007). The sample represents 273 hours of spectroscopic observations with 6.5 - 10-m-class telescopes of objects detected and selected for spectroscopy by the ESSENCE team. We present 174 spectra of 156 objects. Combining this sample with that of Matheson et al. (2005), we have a total sample of 329 spectra of 274 objects. From this, we are able to spectroscopically classify 118 Type Ia SNe. As the survey has matured, the efficiency of classifying SNe Ia has remained constant while we have observed both higher-redshift SNe Ia and SNe Ia farther from maximum brightness. Examining the subsample of SNe Ia with host-galaxy redshifts shows that redshifts derived from only the SN Ia spectra are consistent with redshifts found from host-galaxy spectra. Moreover, the phases derived from only the SN Ia spectra are consistent with those derived from light-curve fits. By comparing our spectra to local templates, we find that the rate of objects similar to the overluminous SN 1991T and the underluminous SN 1991bg in our sample are consistent with that of the local sample. We do note, however, that we detect no object spectroscopically or photometrically similar to SN 1991bg. Although systematic effects could reduce the high-redshift rate we expect based on the low-redshift surveys, it is possible that SN 1991bg-like SNe Ia are less prevalent at high redshift.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted to A

    A Black Hole in the X-Ray Nova Velorum 1993

    We have obtained 17 moderate-resolution (~2.5 A) optical spectra of the Galactic X-ray Nova Velorum 1993 in quiescence with the Keck-II telescope. The orbital period (P) is 0.285206 +/- 0.0000014 d, and the semiamplitude (K_2) is 475.4 +/- 5.9 km/s. Our derived mass function, f(M_1) = PK_2^3 /2 pi G = 3.17 +/- 0.12 M_sun, is close to the conventional absolute limiting mass for a neutron star (~ 3.0-3.2 M_sun) -- but if the orbital inclination i is less than 80 degrees (given the absences of eclipses), then M_1 is greater than 4.2-4.4 M_sun for nominal secondary-star masses of 0.5 M_sun (M0) to 0.65 M_sun (K6). The primary star is therefore almost certainly a black hole rather than a neutron star. The velocity curve of the primary from H-alpha emission has a semiamplitude (K_1) of 65.3 +/- 7.0 km/s, but with a phase offset by 237 degrees (rather than 180 degrees) from that of the secondary star. The nominal mass ratio q = M_2/M_1 = K_1/K_2 = 0.137 +/- 0.015, and hence for M_2 = 0.5-0.65 M_sun we derive M_1 = 3.64-4.74 M_sun. An adopted mass M_1 ~ 4.4 M_sun is significantly below the typical value of ~ 7 M_sun found for black holes in other low-mass X-ray binaries. Keck observations of MXB 1659-29 (V2134 Oph) in quiescence reveal a probable optical counterpart at R = 23.6 +/- 0.4 mag.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, added references, revised per. referee's comments Accepted for publication in August 1999 issue of PAS

    We present the final installment of an intensive 13-year study of variations of the optical continuum and broad H-beta emission line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. The data base consists of 1530 optical continuum measurements and 1248 H-beta measurements. The H-beta variations follow the continuum variations closely, with a typical time delay of about 20 days. However, a year-by-year analysis shows that the magnitude of emission-line time delay is correlated with the mean continuum flux. We argue that the data are consistent with the simple model prediction that the size of the broad-line region is proportional to the square root of the ionizing luminosity. Moreover, the apparently linear nature of the correlation between the H-beta response time and the nonstellar optical continuum arises as a consequence of the changing shape of the continuum as it varies, specifically with the optical (5100 A) continuum luminosity proportional to the ultraviolet (1350 A) continuum luminosity to the 0.56 power.Comment: 20 pages plus 4 figures.     Optical Spectroscopy of Supernova 1993J During Its First 2500 Days

    We present 42 low-resolution spectra of Supernova (SN) 1993J, our complete collection from the Lick and Keck Observatories, from day 3 after explosion to day 2454, as well as one Keck high-dispersion spectrum from day 383. SN 1993J began as an apparent SN II, albeit an unusual one. After a few weeks, a dramatic transition took place, as prominent helium lines emerged in the spectrum. SN 1993J had metamorphosed from a SN II to a SN IIb. Nebular spectra of SN 1993J closely resemble those of SNe Ib and Ic, but with a persistent H_alpha line. At very late times, the H_alpha emission line dominated the spectrum, but with an unusual, box-like profile.     Scattering off an SO(10) cosmic string

    The scattering of fermions from the abelian string arising during the phase transition SO(10)→SU(5)×Z2SO(10) \rightarrow SU(5) \times Z_2 induced by the Higgs in the 126 representation is studied. Elastic cross-sections and baryon number violating cross-sections due to the coupling to gauge fields in the core of the string are computed by both a first quantised method and a perturbative second quantised method. The elastic cross-sections are found to be Aharonov-Bohm type. However, there is a marked asymmetry between the scattering cross-sections for left and right handed fields. The catalysis cross-sections are small, depending on the grand unified scale. If cosmic strings were observed our results could help tie down the underlying gauge group.Comment: 20 page

    Direct Confirmation of the Asymmetry of the Cas A Supernova with Light Echoes

    We report the first detection of asymmetry in a supernova (SN) photosphere based on SN light echo (LE) spectra of Cas A from the different perspectives of dust concentrations on its LE ellipsoid. New LEs are reported based on difference images, and optical spectra of these LEs are analyzed and compared. After properly accounting for the effects of finite dust-filament extent and inclination, we find one field where the He I and H alpha features are blueshifted by an additional ~4000 km/s relative to other spectra and to the spectra of the Type IIb SN 1993J. That same direction does not show any shift relative to other Cas A LE spectra in the Ca II near-infrared triplet feature. We compare the perspectives of the Cas A LE dust concentrations with recent three-dimensional modeling of the SN remnant (SNR) and note that the location having the blueshifted He I and H alpha features is roughly in the direction of an Fe-rich outflow and in the opposite direction of the motion of the compact object at the center of the SNR. We conclude that Cas A was an intrinsically asymmetric SN. Future LE spectroscopy of this object, and of other historical SNe, will provide additional insight into the connection of explosion mechanism to SN to SNR, as well as give crucial observational evidence regarding how stars explode.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Bulk Damage Effects in Irradiated Silicon Detectors due to Clustered Divacancies

    High resistivity silicon particle detectors will be used extensively in experiments at the future CERN Large Hadron Collider where the enormous particle fluences give rise to significant atomic displacement damage. A model has been developed to estimate the evolution of defect concentrations during irradiation and their electrical behaviour according to Shockley-Read-Hall (SRH) semiconductor statistics. The observed increases in leakage current and doping concentration changes can be described well after gamma irradiation but less well after fast neutron irradiation. A possible non-SRH mechanism is considered, based on the hypothesis of charge transfer between clustered divacancy defects in neutron damaged silicon detectors. This leads to a large enhancement over the SRH prediction for V2 acceptor state occupancy and carrier generation rate which may resolve the discrepancy

    Cosmology from Type Ia Supernovae

    This presentation reports on first evidence for a low-mass-density/positive-cosmological-constant universe that will expand forever, based on observations of a set of 40 high-redshift supernovae. The experimental strategy, data sets, and analysis techniques are described.
