    Outside-in disk evolution in the LMC

    From the analysis of the color-magnitude diagrams and color functions of four wide LMC fields located from ~2 to 6 kpc from the kinematic center of the LMC we present evidence that, while the oldest population is coeval in all fields, the age of the youngest component of the dominant stellar population gradually increases with galactocentric distance, from currently active star formation in a field at 2.3 deg, to 100 Myr, 0.8 Gyr, and 1.5 Gyr in fields at 4.0 deg, 5.5 deg, and 7.1 deg, respectively. This outside-in quenching of the star formation in the LMC disk is correlated with the decreasing HI column density (which is < 2x 10^{20} cm^{-2} in the two outermost fields with little or no current star formation. Other work in the literature hints at similar behavior in the stellar populations of irregular galaxies, and in M33. This is observational evidence against the inside-out disk formation scenario in low-mass spirals and irregular galaxies.     Unexplored olive cultivars from the Valencian Community (Spain): some chemical characteristics as a valorization strategy

    [EN] The olive processing industry has till date been dominated by a small group of cultivars, leading to the possibility of some olive cultivars becoming extinct in the near future. In this study, we determined the composition of some chemical components in the olive oils from 31 minor olive cultivars of the Valencian Community. Our main aim was to identify suitable cultivars, which could produce differentiated olive oils, thus aiming towards their valorization. The average oil content of minor olive cultivars was found to be good, with some of them reporting approximately 60% (dry basis). On average, the total phenolic content was 229mg kg(-1), with cv. Mas Blanc reporting the highest content (570mg kg(-1)). Among the various tocopherols found in olives, -tocopherol was the main constituent, with a maximum concentration of 290.6mg kg(-1). Linoleic acid was the main polyunsaturated fatty acid and varied between 3.4% (cv. Del Pomet) and 16.9% (cv. Blanqueta Enguera). Special attention needs to be paid to the composition of sterols, since some olive oils exceeded the limits established for some sterols by the current European legislation. Some of the cultivars studied were highly productive, and originated differentiated olive oils with a rich composition of antioxidants and essential fatty acids. In some cases, these beneficial compounds were higher than those of commercial oils obtained from the most common cultivars worldwide.     Whey Versus Soy Protein Diets and Renal Status in Rats

We examined the effects of whey protein (WP) and soy protein (SP) intake on plasma, urinary, and morphological renal parameters in rats. One hundred and twenty Wistar rats were randomly distributed into 2 experimental groups fed with either WP or SP diets over 12 weeks. These diets were based on commercial WP or SP isolates. The urinary calcium content was higher in the WP diet compared to the SP diet group (P < .001) whereas the urinary citrate level was lower (P < .001). The urinary pH was more acidic in the WP diet group compared to the SP diet group (P < .001); however, no differences were observed between the groups for any of the renal morphological parameters analyzed (all, P > .05) or other plasma renal markers such as albumin or urea concentrations. The increase of acid and urinary calcium and the lower urinary citrate level observed in the WP diet group could increase the incidence of nephrolithiasis compared to the SP diet group. Despite the WP showed poorer acid-base profile, no significant morphological renal changes were observed.     Control of brain state transitions with light

    Behavior is driven by specific neuronal activity and can be directly associated with characteristic brain states. The oscillatory activity of neurons contains information about the mental state of an individual, and the transition between physiological brain states is largely controlled by neuromodulators. Manipulating neural activity, brain rhythms or synchronization is of significant therapeutic interest in several neurological disorders and can be achieved by different means such as transcranial current and magnetic stimulation techniques, and by light through optogenetics, although the clinical translation of the latter is hampered by the need of gene therapy. Here, we directly modulate brain rhythms with light using a novel photoswitchable muscarinic agonist. Synchronous slow wave activity is transformed into a higher frequency pattern in the cerebral cortex both in slices in vitro and in anesthetized mice. These results open the way to the study of the neuromodulation and control of spatiotemporal patterns of activity and pharmacology of brain states, their transitions, and their links to cognition and behavior, in different organisms without requiring any genetic manipulation
