    Elastic alpha-scattering of 112Sn and 124Sn at astrophysically relevant energies

    The cross sections for the elastic scattering reactions {112,124}Sn(a,a){112,124}Sn at energies above and below the Coulomb barrier are presented and compared to predictions for global alpha-nucleus potentials. The high precision of the new data allows a study of the global alpha-nucleus potentials at both the proton and neutron-rich sides of an isotopic chain. In addition, local alpha-nucleus potentials have been extracted for both nuclei, and used to reproduce elastic scattering data at higher energies. Predictions from the capture cross section of the reaction 112Sn(a,g)116Te at astrophysically relevant energies are presented and compared to experimental data.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Schistosoma haematobium co-infection with soil-transmitted helminthes: prevalence and risk factors from two communities in the central region of Ghana

    Background: Schistosoma haematobium co-infection with S. mansoni and  soil-transmitted helminthes afflict most-at-risk populations in endemic communities in the developing world. Aim: This study investigated S. haematobium co-infection with soil-transmitted helminthes, and host risk factors in two communities in the central region of Ghana. Methods: Schools and children were selected by stratified cluster and random sampling methods respectively. A total of 250 school children (aged 5 - > 20 years) were recruited. Teachers issued questionnaires to obtain information on host risk factors, water-contact activities and knowledge of S.  haematobium infection. Urine and stool samples were examined for S. haematobium infection and S. mansoni and soil-transmitted helminthes using sedimentation quantitative and direct smear/formol-ether sedimentation concentration techniques respectively.Results: S. haematobium infection (1 - 50 eggs/10 ml urine)  prevalence at Apewosika and Putubiw were 27.5 % and 17 % respectively. Males were more at risk of S. haematobium infection than females. S. haematobium co-infection with soil-transmitted helminthes (A. lumbricoides, E. histolytica, and T. trichuria) was recorded in Putubiw, with females more at risk than males. Children aged 16-19 and 10-15 were more at risk of S. haematobium infection and  helminthic co-infection respectively. Haematuria and proteinuria were predictive of S. haematobium infection. School children had poor knowledge of S. haematobium infection. Water-contact activity was common.Conclusion: S. haematobium prevalence and its co-infection with soil-transmitted helminthes were common in Putubiw. Watercontact activity and poor knowledge about S. haematobium infection were major risk factors.     Ainda que possuam importĂąncia reconhecida, os livros didĂĄticos (LDs) voltados ao ensino universitĂĄrio raramente constituem objeto de pesquisa. Nesse contexto, propĂ”e-se investigar qual foi e qual Ă© o papel dos LDs na formação profissional em QuĂ­mica, e que lugar eles vĂȘm ocupando na dinĂąmica das salas de aula, tomando como locus de pesquisa uma importante universidade pĂșblica brasileira. Foram entrevistados, considerando fundamentos da histĂłria oral, seis professores, cujas formação e atuação docente ocorreu em diferentes perĂ­odos da histĂłria da instituição.     Role of trimetazidine in carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in rats

    Background: Hepatotoxicity by chemicals and drugs is a common clinical problem. Presently very few drugs are showing effectiveness in prevention and treatment of hepatic damage. So in this study, we evaluated the role of trimetazidine in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage in rats. Objective of current study is to evaluate effects of prophylactic trimetazidine against carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in rats.Methods: Liver damage was induced in 30 albino rats by CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg, i.p.) once daily for 7 days. Extent of damage was studied by assessing biochemical parameters (SGOT, SGPT, ALP, proteins and bilirubin). These biochemical observations were supplemented by pentobarbitone Sleeping Time and Histological Examination of liver. The effect of co-administration of trimetazidine (doses 5 and 10 mg/kg p. o.) on the above parameters was investigated. Liv.52Âź was used as Positive Control. Data was analyzed by one way ANOVA, followed by Dunnett's test.Results: Trimetazidine significantly prevented CCl4 induced elevation of serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP and bilirubin (total and direct), and reduction in protein level. Pentobarbitone sleeping time and histological examination of the liver showed consistent results. The results were comparable to that of Liv.52Âź.Conclusions: Trimetazidine, when administered prophylactically, shows hepatoprotective effect against CCl4 induced liver damage

    Shear rate threshold for the boundary slip in dense polymer films

    The shear rate dependence of the slip length in thin polymer films confined between atomically flat surfaces is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The polymer melt is described by the bead-spring model of linear flexible chains. We found that at low shear rates the velocity profiles acquire a pronounced curvature near the wall and the absolute value of the negative slip length is approximately equal to thickness of the viscous interfacial layer. At higher shear rates, the velocity profiles become linear and the slip length increases rapidly as a function of shear rate. The gradual transition from no-slip to steady-state slip flow is associated with faster relaxation of the polymer chains near the wall evaluated from decay of the time autocorrelation function of the first normal mode. We also show that at high melt densities the friction coefficient at the interface between the polymer melt and the solid wall follows power law decay as a function of the slip velocity. At large slip velocities the friction coefficient is determined by the product of the surface induced peak in the structure factor, temperature and the contact density of the first fluid layer near the solid wall.Comment: 37 pages, 16 figure

    Accelerating progress towards the SDGs: Collaborative policymaking in sanitation for integrated benefits in Sub-Saharan Africa

    In 2020, 54% of the world had access to safe sanitation, but access further reduces to 21% in sub-Saharan Africa . With only eight years left to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is an urgent need to accelerate action in the sanitation sector. Previous academic research highlights sanitation as vital for supporting cross-cutting outcomes in health, economics, climate, gender equality, and the environment. However, there is a gap in knowledge outputs for policymakers to highlights how action in sanitation can leverage investment from agencies and ministries to achieve multiple SDGs. Our transdisciplinary team (academics, policymakers, and practitioners) co-developed actionable outputs for diverse audiences to fill this gap, building on an existing global evidence review identifying 130 synergies between sanitation and the SDGs. We identified priority focus areas influencing sanitation policies and financing in Sub-Saharan Africa to collaboratively develop visual aids, policy briefs, and this academic publication to engage cross-sectoral audiences. Our approach offers insights into the value of theoretical knowledge for policy outcomes in the sanitation sector. It is most likely that SDG6 Targets particularly related to sanitation will not be met by 2030 as the sector suffers from under investment. Co-creation between academia and the development sector is critical for consolidating knowledge/research and development practice to influence investment, progress and innovation
