Short report: Cysticercosis in an Egyptian mummy of the late Ptolemaic period
Abstract
We describe here an ancient case of cysticercosis that was discovered in an Egyptian mummy of a young woman of about 20 years of age who lived in the late Ptolemaic period (second to first centuries b.c.). On removal of the stomach and its rehydration, a cystic lesion in the stomach wall was observed by naked eye. Microscopical examination of sections of this lesion revealed a cystic structure, with a wall, with numerous projecting eversions, a characteristic feature of the larval stage (cysticercus) of the human tapeworm Taenia solium (or "pig tapeworm"). Immunohistochemical testing with serum from a T. solium-infected human confirmed the identity of the cyst. This finding is the oldest on record of the antiquity of this zoonotic parasite. Penile cancer metastasizing to the breast: a case report
BACKGROUND:
Penile cancer is a relatively uncommon cancer in developed nations. Metastatic disease is rare, but lymphatic or vascular spreading has been previously reported to the liver, lungs, bones, brain, heart and skin.
CASE PRESENTATION:
We report a case of a 49-year-old white man with a penile squamous cell carcinoma previously treated with partial penectomy and bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection, followed by adjuvant therapy. Three years after treatment, the primitive neoplasm metastasized to the breast, presenting as a painful lump. Differentials of a secondary versus a malignant primary tumor were considered and in view of a diagnostic dilemma the lesion was excised.
CONCLUSIONS:
This case is unusual in its site of metastatic progression as well as in its pattern of clinical presentation. Awareness of such a condition by physicians is mandatory in order to make an early diagnosis and start prompt and correct therapeutic planning
Chapter Massimo Quaini e il CISGE
Among the geographical associations the Italian Centre for Historical and Geographical Studies (CISGE) was the one with which Massimo Quaini maintained a stronger relationship. In addition to the sharing of the study fields, Quaini was also linked to CISGE by the close and inseparable link between geography and history, the combination of concrete research and theoretical reflection, the plurality of approaches, the continuous dialectic and the marked interdisciplinarity. Elements that have always characterized the Centre since its foundation, becoming concrete in meetings, seminars, conferences, research groups, national and international projects and in numerous publications. Through a careful analysis of Quaini’s writings contained in the proceedings, the collections of essays and the journal Geostorie (which since 2000 replaced the Notiziario del CISGE) – a long and uninterrupted series from 1992 to 2017 – the contribution aims at highlighting the original, critical and stimulating contribution offered by Massimo to the four fundamental study streams of CISGE: historical geography, history of cartography, history of geographical thought, history of travels and of explorations
The Highly Energetic Expansion of SN2010bh Associated with GRB 100316D
We present the spectroscopic and photometric evolution of the nearby (z =
0.059) spectroscopically confirmed type Ic supernova, SN 2010bh, associated
with the soft, long-duration gamma-ray burst (X-ray flash) GRB 100316D.
Intensive follow-up observations of SN 2010bh were performed at the ESO Very
Large Telescope (VLT) using the X-shooter and FORS2 instruments. Owing to the
detailed temporal coverage and the extended wavelength range (3000--24800 A),
we obtained an unprecedentedly rich spectral sequence among the hypernovae,
making SN 2010bh one of the best studied representatives of this SN class. We
find that SN 2010bh has a more rapid rise to maximum brightness (8.0 +/- 1.0
rest-frame days) and a fainter absolute peak luminosity (L_bol~3e42 erg/s) than
previously observed SN events associated with GRBs. Our estimate of the ejected
(56)Ni mass is 0.12 +/- 0.02 Msun. From the broad spectral features we measure
expansion velocities up to 47,000 km/s, higher than those of SNe 1998bw (GRB
980425) and 2006aj (GRB 060218). Helium absorption lines He I lambda5876 and He
I 1.083 microm, blueshifted by ~20,000--30,000 km/s and ~28,000--38,000 km/s,
respectively, may be present in the optical spectra. However, the lack of
coverage of the He I 2.058 microm line prevents us from confirming such
identifications. The nebular spectrum, taken at ~186 days after the explosion,
shows a broad but faint [O I] emission at 6340 A. The light-curve shape and
photospheric expansion velocities of SN 2010bh suggest that we witnessed a
highly energetic explosion with a small ejected mass (E_k ~ 1e52 erg and M_ej ~
3 Msun). The observed properties of SN 2010bh further extend the heterogeneity

Test and commissioning of the CARLOS control boards for the ALICE Silicon Drift Detectors
This paper presents the test strategy employed during the installation of the CARLOS end ladder boards developed for the Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) of ALICE. Each CARLOS board compresses the data provided by the front-end electronics of one SDD and sends them via an optical link of 800 Mbit/s to the data concentrator card (CARLOSrx) located in the counting room. The paper describes the integration of the CARLOS boards in the final SDD system, including its cooling and mechanical support, the power supply distribution and the optical interconnections. The results of the tests performed after each step of the installation sequence are reported
