    Classic Papers in Critical Care: A Bibliometric Analysis

    Purpose- This study aimed to identify and analyze the bibliometric characteristics of the classic papers in the field of critical care. Design/methodology/approach- In this bibliometric overview, Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science were used for data collection. Study sample consisted of the classic papers in the field of critical care, introduced in Google scholar. SPSS were used for data analyses. Findings- Critical Care ranked the first journal in having critical care classic papers. All critical care classic papers were multi-authored. The most highly-cited paper was a paper titled Intensive insulin therapy in the medical ICU , with 3796 received citations in Google Scholar. The United States was the top contributing country. There was a significantly positive correlation between the citations of critical care classic papers in Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science (r= .988, p\u3c.001). Practical implications- The bibliometric overview of critical care classic papers can be beneficial to the researchers and specialists in the field as well as to the editorial teams of its related journals. Bibliometricians and library and information specialist can use the findings of the study. Originality/value- This study is the first to analyze the classic papers in critical care field from a bibliometric perspective

    Effects of Laser Irradiation on Caries Prevention

    INTRODUCTION: Although dental caries is a preventable disease, it is still common and remains a public health problem. One of the potentially effective preventive measures is the use of lasers. The purpose of this study was to review the studies about use of laser irradiation on the inhibition of carious lesions and the effectiveness of different commercial laser type (Nd:YAG, CO2, and Argon).METHODS: A literature search included journal databases, existing systematic reviews, and studies identified by content experts. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were assessed for quality.RESULTS: Some studies have demonstrated the potential preventive effect of laser irradiation on sound enamel; the effect of irradiation on white spot lesions is still unclear. The effects of irradiating demineralized enamel surfaces coupled with the use of topical fluoride application is also still unclear and further research needs to be conducted in this area. Laser irradiation alone can significantly enhance acid resistance of sound enamel surfaces and prevent caries progression.CONCLUSION: Combined use of topical fluoride application and laser irradiation on sound enamel surfaces has provided the best protection against caries initiation and progression. Laser irradiation was of limited value in managing incipient carious lesions. Argon laser use may be easier clinically due to its large and visible beam diameter, which allows for irradiation of the whole surface of the tooth instead of the overlapping and time consuming pattern of the CO2 laser

    Determining the mental model of experts regarding the factors hindering the development of table tennis in Iran. The purpose of this study is to determine the mental pattern of experts regarding the barriers to professional table tennis in Iran using Q methodology. The present study is applied in terms of purpose; In terms of exploratory nature; In terms of data collection, descriptive-survey, and due to application, Q methodology is a type of mixed research (quantitative-qualitative). The statistical population was veterans and elites in table tennis in Iran, from which 21 people were selected as participants through a combination of purposeful and unlikely sampling and snowball sampling. Participant sorting data were entered in SPSS software to identify the different mindsets of the participants using Q-factor analysis. Finally, the main deterrents in Iranian professional table tennis were prioritized based on nine mental patterns. These mental patterns were then discussed and interpreted. Finally, coping strategies were proposed

    Serum dipeptidyl peptidase-4 activity and progranulin level in polycystic ovary syndrome

    Background: Evidence showed that abnormal alteration of adipokines level may perform a key role in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) pathogenesis. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) and progranulin (PGRN) are two novel adipokines related to insulin resistance (IR). Thus, we aimed to determine the serum DPP4 activity and PGRN level in PCOS patients with and without IR, and non-PCOS women. Methods: Ninety women were recruited in the present study including 60 PCOS patients (divided into two groups of 30 IR and 30 non-IR) and 30 non-PCOS women. Serum levels of insulin, fasting blood glucose, PGRN, and DPP4 activity were measured, and IR indices were calculated. Results: DPP4 activity was significantly higher in PCOS-IR and PCOS-NIR patients than non-PCOS women (p<0.001, P=0.011, respectively), whereas no significant variation was detected between two groups of PCOS subjects. There was no significant difference in the level of PGRN in the three groups of the present study. Conclusion: The present study suggests that increasing DPP4 activity may be associated with PCOS

    Does Altmetric Attention Score of Articles on Diabetes Mellitus Correlate with their Citations in Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science and Dimensions?

    This applied altmetric study aimed to analyze the presence of highly-cited documents on diabetes mellitus in online social media and correlate their altmetric attention scores with their received citation counts. Twenty thousand highly-cited documents on diabetes mellitus were identified in Scopus and their altmetric attention scores (ASSs) were extracted from Altmetric Explorer (Altmetric LLP, London, UK). Received citation rates of the documents were extracted from Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science and Dimensions. Excell 2016 and SPSS 22 were used for data statistical description and analysis. Out of 19,383 DOI-owner highly-cited documents on diabetes mellitus, 16,076 (82.94%) were shared at least once in social media and had an altmetric attention score. Mendeley ranked first in sharing documents with 16,868 documents (87.02%). Six hundred forty-six thousand one hundred eighty-four tweets were tweeted on the studied documents from 222 countries, with the United States as first-ranked country (17,453 tweets, 18.2%). The highest-mentioned journal was the Lancet, and the highest-mentioned research institute was Harvard University. A significantly positive correlation was found between the altmetric attention scores of the studied documents and their citation counts in Google scholar (r= .842, p<.01), Scopus (r=.855, p<.01), Web of Science (r=.709, p<.05) and Dimensions (r= .841, p< .01). Regarding the central role of presence in social media in increasing the visibility and citability of documents, researchers must use the potentiality of social media and Web 2 tools for more sharing their scientific works and increasing the influence of their research output. In this study the relationship between the presence of documents in online social media and tools and their received citation rates was investigated in a large sample (20,000 diabetes mellitus documents). The results benefit researchers and research administrators for sharing and publicizing research output in social media

    Insulin resistance and adverse metabolic profile in overweight/obese and normal weight of young women with polycystic ovary syndrome

    Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs) is an endocrine-metabolic disorder. This study intends to determine the comparison of insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic disturbance in overweight/obese and normal-weight of young women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: Using a comparative cross-sectional study design in 2015, 27 normal weight (18<BMI<25) and 85 overweight/obese (BMI≥25) aged 18 and 35 underwent clinical measures of HOMA (IR) as insulin resistance and QUICKI as insulin sensitivity tools in Fatemezahra Infertility Research Center of Babol. Lipid profile and hormonal parameters were evaluated between two groups. Results: 112 women with PCOS participated in this study. The mean age was 22.4±3.48 years in the normal PCOS group (n=27) and 24.4±5.06 years in the overweight/obese PCOS patients (n=85). BMI had a significant straight correlation with insulin resistance (p3.15) vs. 8.3% (5) in the normal group (P13µU/ml) vs. 10.3% (7) in the control group (p<0.001). Conclusions: Overweight/obese PCOs patients revealed higher insulin resistance and lower insulin sensitivity, and also greater TG and LDL cholesterol. Priority of management of insulin resistance and lipid profile should be considered on identifying these potentially major complications
