    Review of Adam Bede

    Get PDF
This Broadview edition of Adam Bede has a biographical and critical introduction, appropriately integrating G. H. Lewes into its discourse, and useful essays on some of the themes of the novel, - Religion, Love, Rank and Status. There are short summaries of selected critical commentaries from the contemporary to the current, including an appraisal of the feminist divide over George Eliot. The brief chronology is succeeded by a note on the text, here that of the First Edition with minor corrections/adjustments from the manuscript, footnoted throughout. The Appendices which follow it provide foreground and background to the novel, for example the author\u27s own self-conscious account of how and when she came to write Adam Bede. Further material is found in the broadsheets on the execution of Mary Voce, extracts on the contemporary reception of the novel - an extension of pp. 39-40 of the introduction - and a telling analysis of the religious background. There are relevant derivations from Eliot\u27s theories of fiction, drawn from comments in the years preceding Adam Bede, which show just show how swiftly they were assimilated into her practice

Of the four million American children who start school each year, as many as one-third are unprepared to learn. Many never catch up. The reasons are complex, but clearly the multitude of systems that should be supporting young children too often fail in that mission – from family to schools to government. In reaction, W.K. Kellogg Foundation launched Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids (SPARK), an initiative designed to unite communities so that all children can be successful before and after they enter school. SPARK fosters partnerships of selected communities, schools, state agencies and families to ensure that they work together effectively for the early learning of children. With the initiative serving as a catalyst or "spark," the goal is to ensure that vulnerable children are ready for school and that schools are ready for children

Self-Reported Arm Function Is Associated with Stress and Fear of Physical Activity among Women Treated for Breast Cancer

Background: Self-reported upper extremity function and objective measures are not strongly associated with each other in women treated for breast cancer (BC). It is not known if the lack of relationship between self-reported upper extremity function and objective measurements may be influenced by perceived levels of stress and fear of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between self-reported upper extremity function and the following: perceived stress levels (PS), fear of physical activity (FPA), health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and objective measures of upper extremity function among women treated for BC. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study included 23 women diagnosed with breast cancer 12-60 months prior to data collection. Self-reported upper extremity function, PS, HRQOL and FPA were assessed using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast Cancer (FACT-B), and Fear of Physical Activity and Exercise for Breast Cancer (FPAX-B), respectively. Objective shoulder measures included range of motion (ROM), strength, and muscular endurance. Results: The DASH was significantly correlated (p\u3c0.001) with the FACT-B, PSS, and FPAX-B (r=-0.863; r= -0.733; r= -0.709 respectively). No significant correlation was found between the DASH and objective measures except non-dominant shoulder endurance (p\u3c0.05, r=-0.432). Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between the self-reported arm function, PS, HRQOL and FPA among women treated for BC. Further research should be done to understand the role that PS and FPA have on the perceived level of upper extremity function that women treated for BC report

Characterisation of lignocellulosic sugars from municipal solid waste residue.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) contains significant quantities of plant-derived carbohydrates which have the potential to be exploited as a biomass source. This study evaluated the chemical composition and fractionation of MSW water-insoluble organic matter remaining after recycling of other components (MSWR). The organic matter was prepared as a dry, alcohol insoluble residue (MSWR-AIR, comprising w = 6% of original MSW) and size fractionated into fractions A, B, C & D. Carbohydrates were present in all the sub-fractions, comprising up to w = 54%; their complexity was also assessed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The lignin content in the samples ranged from w = 11–22%. The most carbohydrate-rich subfraction (C; w = 4% original MSW) was sequentially extracted to provide information on the likely constituent cell wall-derived polymers, sugar compositions and uronic acid content. The results indicate that approximately w = 25% of the MSWR-AIR comprises glucose, which appears to be mostly cellulosic in origin. The results are discussed in relation to the potential for exploitation

The movement and physiological demands of international and regional men’s touch rugby matches

This study compared the internal and external match demands imposed on international and regional standard male touch rugby players. The study adopted a cohort design with independent groups. Twelve international players (mean age 27.8 ± 6.2 y, body mass 72.8 ± 3.7 kg, stature 174.5 ± 5.4 cm) and nine regional players (mean age 25.5 ± 5.5 y, body mass 74.2 ± 7 kg, stature 174.1 ± 7 cm) were analysed during nine competitive matches from the 2013 season. Movement demands were measured using a 5 Hz global positioning system (GPS), alongside heart rate and session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) to quantify internal load. Total distance covered by international players was lower than regional players (2265.8 ± 562.3 cf. 2970 ± 558.9 m, p14 km·h) was not different between groups (p>0.05), but relative high speed running (39.3 ± 12.0 cf. 26.0 ± 13.6 m·min) was higher for international players. Regional players performed more absolute low speed activity (≤14 km·h) than international players (p0.05). Very high speed running (>20 km·h) distance, bout number and frequency, peak and average speed were all greater in international players (p<0.05). Higher average heart rate, summated heart rate and s-RPE (p<0.05) indicated higher internal loads during matches for regional players. These data indicate that performance in men's touch rugby is characterised by more relative high speed running and better repeated sprint capacities in higher standard players
