Rougé-Maillart et al. proposed a technique to determine the age of a subject using the acetabular surface and the auricular surface of the coxal bone. This technique has been described as promising, particularly in subjects under 50 years of age. The initial aim of this study was to test the technique on a new population with two observers, one of whom had no prior experience of the technique. A second aim was to confirm the utility of using the technique on elderly subjects. Material and method We worked on 210 bones (108 male and 102 female) from the Terry Collection. Two observers studied the bones (one was a beginner, one an advanced user of the technique). Age estimation of the skeletons was based on analysis of the auricular surface and the acetabulum as described in the method by Rougé-Maillart et al. Intra- and inter-observer correlations were performed to monitor the reliability and reproducibility of this technique in the overall population, before moving on to subjects aged over 50. Results For both observers, the data highlighted a good average correlation between score and real age (overall scores of 0.648 and 0.773) in the overall population. The similarity between the observers’ results increases as total scores are used. However, the inter-observer correlation is lower than for the previous study, as some criteria are more difficult to classify for the novice observer. As regards subjects over 50, the results are less reliable than expected, with a higher inter-observer variation than in the overall population. Conclusion This study confirms the reproducibility and effectiveness of the method. However, some criteria must be redefined, while others must be weighed. Likewise, a modification to the Bayesian approach with a change to the intervals should be considered

Forensic age estimation based on the trabecular bone changes of the pelvic bone using post-mortem CT.

yesWe analyzed the trabecular bone changes in the pubic bone (PB) and in the auricular surface (AS) of the ilium using 319 CT scans of cadavers to estimate the age. Although the sharpness of the trabecular structure decreases in CT images when soft tissues are present, we identified four phases for the changes in PB and five in AS; a juvenile trait in PB and a senile trait in AS helped narrow the age range. High correlation with age was identified for both sexes in PB (F 0.89; M 0.75) and in AS (F 0.85; M 0.71) used independently or combined (F 0.91; M 0.78). The old adults (>60 years) could be evaluated with better accuracy and discriminated in several phases. We found low inter-observer error and low inaccuracy (about 6 years, mean for all age ranges). The method is robust with respect to slice thickness, display window and kernel within the tested ranges

Evaluation of Lamendin’s age-at-death estimation method in a documented osteological collection (La Plata, Argentina)

Age estimation is one of the main biological parameters to be determined for constructing an individual biologicalprofile. In contexts where bones are poorly preserved, the use of teeth becomes relevant. Translucency of dentine has become relevant in recent decades, since the publication of the method proposed by Lamendin et al. (1992). In the local context, studies validating age-estimation methods from the permanent dentition are lacking. For this reason, it was decided to evaluate the performance of the age-estimation method proposed by Lamendin et al. (1992) in a sample of adult individuals with documented age belonging to the Lambre collection from the Municipal Cemetery of the city of La Plata. It was found that estimated age according to Lamendin et al.?s (1992) method varies by tooth type and age, being age the one that influences the estimates the most. On the other hand, sex has no influence in the estimation of age. The results showed no differences in the estimation in individuals between 35?50 years old, whileexhibiting a tendency to overestimate age in young adults and to underestimate it in older ones.Fil: Garizoain, Gonzalo.
