2D kinematics of the edge-on spiral galaxy ESO 379-G006

We present a kinematical study of the nearly edge-on galaxy ESO 379-G006 that shows the existence of extraplanar ionized gas. With Fabry-Perot spectroscopy at H-alpha, we study the kinematics of ESO 379-G006 using velocity maps and position-velocity diagrams parallel to the major and to the minor axis of the galaxy. We build the rotation curve of the disk and discuss the role of projection effects due to the fact of viewing this galaxy nearly edge-on. The twisting of the isovelocities in the radial velocity field of the disk of ESO 379-G006 as well as the kinematic asymmetries found in some position-velocity diagrams parallel to the minor axis of the galaxy suggest the existence of deviations to circular motions in the disk that can be modeled and explained with the inclusion of a radial inflow probably generated by a bar or by spiral arms. We succeeded in detecting extraplanar Diffuse Ionized Gas in this galaxy. At the same time, from the analysis of position-velocity diagrams, we found some evidence that the extraplanar gas could lag in rotation velocity with respect to the midplane rotation.Comment: 61 pages, 15 figures. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of di erent dietary Trp concentrations on the stress and metabolism response of juvenile Senegalese soles (Solea senegalensis). Fish (38.1 1.9 g) were fed di erent Trp-enriched feeds (0%, 1% and 2% Trp added) for two and eight days, and later exposed to air stress for three min. Samples were taken pre- and 1 h post-stress (condition). Plasma cortisol, lactate, glucose and proteins were significantly a ected by the sampling time, showing higher values at 1 h post-stress. Trp concentration in food also had significant e ects on lactate and glucose levels. However, the feeding period did not a ect these parameters. Post-stress values were higher than in the pre-stress condition for every plasma parameter, except for lactate in two days and 1% Trp treatment. Nevertheless, cortisol, glucose and lactate did not vary significantly between pre- and post-stress samplings in fish fed the 1% Trp-enriched diet for two days. The lack of variability in cortisol response was also due to the high pre-stress value, significantly superior to pre-stress control. The exposure time to Trp feeding did not significantly a ect any enzyme activity; however, Trp added and condition influenced protein-related enzyme activities. In spite of decreasing stress markers, Trp-enriched diets altered the protein metabolism

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy in adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has increased and managing other health conditions is increasingly important for patients and healthcare planning. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and association between different health conditions and HIV status. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of adult UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink primary care electronic medical records linked to hospital admissions as of Nov 30, 2015. We examined 47 health condition groups and 304 physical and mental health conditions by HIV status, after adjustment for age, sex, social deprivation status using logistic regression. FINDINGS: There were 964 patients with HIV (61.7% male; 92.8% aged <65 years) and 941,113 non-HIV patients (49.4% male; 75.2% aged <65 years). Condition groups with the greatest prevalence in HIV that were also highly prevalent in adults without HIV included: lipid disorder (41.4% vs 40.2%), and hypertension (19.1% vs 24.6%). Following adjustment, 18 (37.5%) condition groups were more likely in adults with HIV and ten (20.8%) were less likely. Individual conditions that were less likely in adults with HIV included: atrial fibrillation (odds ratio [OR] 0.37 [95% CI 0.20–0.64]) and hypertension (OR_0.78 [0.65–0.94]); rheumatoid arthritis (OR 0.27 [0.05–0.84]); asthma (OR_0.65 (0.53–0.80]); and certain eye diseases such as macular degeneration (OR_0.30 [0.09–0.70]). Meanwhile individual conditions that were more likely included: liver fibrosis, sclerosis, and cirrhosis (OR_3.23 [1.85–5.20]); pulmonary embolism (OR_2.06 [1.15–3.36]); male infertility (OR_2.23 [1.50–3.16]) and female infertility (OR_2.01 [1.34–2.88]); bipolar disorder (OR_2.93 [1.52–5.05]) and depression (OR_1.49 [1.28–1.71]); cervical malignancy (OR_4.64 [1.15–12.15]); and infections. INTERPRETATION: Comorbidity is common in adults with HIV, with physical and mental health conditions spanning a wide spectrum. HIV management should consider multidisciplinary care models to provide optimal patient care. FUNDING: The project was funded by the Bart’s Charity; DRM was funded by a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development Fellowship; DRM and DMM received funding from the HDR-UK Precision therapeutics programme

This study intended to make an analysis about the profile of competences to assess qualitatively and quantitatively each of generic abilities that are to be developed in the course of General Didactics in the first year of Pedagogy Degree, Faculty Science Education at the University of Seville. We considered the need to design instruments that help us assess abilities objectively and accurately. So far the assessment has focused on knowledge that has been valued as a quality or quantity with different instruments, but we find difficulties to assessment the development of those abilities which we set in each of our educational projects and we don’t have tradition and experience

Wickerhamomyces anomalus is pectinolytic yeast isolated from citrus fruits peels in the province of Misiones, Argentine. In the present work, enzymes produced by this yeast strain were characterized, and polygalacturonase physicochemical properties were determined in order to evaluate the application of the supernatant in the maceration of potato tissues. W. anomalus was able to produce PGin liquid mediumcontaining glucose and citrus pectin, whosemode of actionwas mainly of endo type. The supernatant did not exhibit esterase or lyase activity. No others enzymes, capable of hydrolyzing cell wall polymers, such as cellulases and xylanases, were detected. PGshowedmaximal activity atpH4.5 and at temperature range between 40∘Cand50∘C. It was stable in the pH range from3.0 to 6.0 and up to 50∘Cat optimumpH.The enzymatic extractmacerated potato tissues efficiently.Volume of single cells increased with the agitation speed. The results observed make the enzymatic extract produced by W. anomalus appropriate for future application in food industry, mainly for the production of fruit nectars or mashed of vegetables such as potato or cassava, of regional interest in the province of Misiones, Argentine.Fil: Martos, María Alicia. The Use of Digital Portfolio in Higher Education before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Get PDF
This study is focused on the advantages and disadvantages of using a digital portfolio to improve the learning and evaluation processes in the initial teacher training of 4th-year students in the University of Seville (Spain). One of the interests of this research was to compare the learning capacities perceived by the students to improve their learning process before and during the COVID 19 pandemic. A qualitative, descriptive methodology was applied, identifying the most relevant dimensions, categories and codes for the analysis, management and interpretation of the opinions of the students, with a research triangulation (Cohen’s kappa coefficient) and a coding performed using the ATLAS.ti 8.4 software. The results show that the advantages with greater percentage correspond to the following categories: learning, usefulness of OneDrive, autonomy and evaluation. The greatest disadvantages detected were: time, uncertainty, usefulness of OneDrive and autonomy. There are differences in the perceptions of the students, between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, about the learning capacities developed with the use of digital portfolio, since they consider that they have acquired more significant learning, greater self-regulation of their learning and greater reflection capacity

ACQUISITION AND REPRODUCTION OF SURFACE APPEARANCE IN ARCHITECTURAL ORTHOIMAGES

Software tools for photogrametric and multi-view stereo reconstruction are nowadays of generalized use in the digitization of architectural cultural heritage. Together with laser scanners, these are well established methods to digitize the three-dimensional geometric properties of real objects. However, the acquired photographic colour mapping of the resulting point clouds or the textured mesh cannot differentiate the proper surface appearance from the influence of the particular illumination present at the moment of the digitization. Acquisition of the actual surface appearance, separated from the existing illumination, is still a challenge for any kind of cultural heritage item, but very specially for architectural elements. Methods based on systematic sampling with commuting light patterns in a laboratory set-up are not suitable. Immovable and outdoor items are normally limited to the existing and uncontrolled natural illumination. This paper demonstrates a practical methodology for appearance acquisition, previously introduced in (Martos and Ruiz, 2013), applied here specifically for the production of re-illuminable architectural orthoimages. It is suitable for outdoor environments, where the illumination is variable and uncontrolled. In fact, naturally occurring changes in light among different images along the day are actually desired and exploited, producing an enhanced multi-layer dynamic texture that is not limited to a frozen RGB colour map. These layers contain valuable complementary information about the depth of the geometry, surface normal fine details and other illuminationdependent parameters, such as direct and indirect light and projected self-shadows, allowing an enhanced and re-illuminable ortoimage representation

A Paraneoplastic Syndrome to Remember: A Case of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired syndrome characterized by the widespread activation of coagulation. It can present as an acute life-threatening emergency or as a chronic process. Mortality is highly dependent on the reversibility of the aetiology and degree of coagulation impairment, so treatment of the underlying cause is vital. The authors present the case of a 57-year-old man whose inaugural presentation of lung cancer was chronic DIC, characterized by three thrombotic events, followed by acute DIC, culminating in death. Metastatic lung cancer was diagnosed only after death
