Anti- Sporothrix spp. activity of medicinal plants
ABSTRACT Cases of sporotrichosis in humans and animals without satisfactory clinical response have increased, a warning sign of strains resistant to conventional antifungal agents. The urgent search for alternative therapies was an incentive for research on medicinal plants with anti-Sporothrix spp. properties. A bibliographic survey was performed based on scientific papers about in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of essential oils and extracts of plants in differents solvents against the fungal of the Sporothrix schenckii complex. The study methodology consisted of a literature review in Google Scholar, Science Direct, Pubmed, Bireme and Springer link with papers from 1986 to 2015. We found 141 species of plants that were investigated, of which 100 species were concentrated in 39 botanical families that had confirmed anti-Sporothrix activity. Combretaceae, Asteraceae and Lamiaceae represented the botanical families with the greatest number of plants species with antifungal potential, using different methodologies. However, there are few studies with medicinal plants in experimental infection in animals that prove their activity in the treatment of sporotrichosis. It reinforces the need for further research related to standardization of in vitro methodologies and in vivo studies related to safety and to toxicity potential of these plants with anti-Sporothrix spp. activity
Poly(lactic-co-glycolic Acid) Matrix Incorporated With Nisin As A Novel Antimicrobial Biomaterial
The use of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) matrix as a biomolecule carrier has been receiving great attention due to its potential therapeutic application. In this context, we investigated the PLGA matrix capacity to incorporate nisin, an antimicrobial peptide capable of inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and bacterial spores germination. Nisin-incorporated PLGA matrices were evaluated based on the inhibitory effect against the nisin-bioindicator Lactobacillus sakei. Additionally, the PLGA-nisin matrix stability over an 8-months period was investigated, as well as the nisin release profile. For the incorporation conditions, we observed that a 5 h incorporation time, at 30 °C, with 250 μg/mL nisin solution in PBS buffer pH 4.5, resulted in the highest inhibitory activity of 2.70 logAU/mL. The PLGA-nisin matrix was found to be relatively stable and showed sustained drug delivery, with continuous release of nisin for 2 weeks. Therefore, PLGA-nisin matrix is could be used as a novel antimicrobial delivery system and an alternative to antibiotics incorporated into PLGA matrices
A tendência fenotípica anual foi de 9,4 g/dia/ano.<br>Data consisting of 47.668 records of a Nellore-Angus crossbred population, raised in several regions of Brazil, from 1991 to 2001, were used to estimate heritability for post-weaning daily gain (ADG) and for scrotal circumference at yearling age (SCY) using REML. Genetic and phenotypic trends for ADG were also estimated. The model used to estimate heritability and breeding values (BVs) for ADG included the fixed effects of breed composition (defined by the percentage of contribution of the Nellore breed of the animal and his parents) and the contemporary group after weaning (herd, year/season of birth, sex and management group) and the random additive genetic animal and residual effects. The same model, including the fixed effects of weight and age of the animal at yearling, as covariates, was used for SCY. The average ages at weaning and yearling were respectively 215 and 528 days. The heritability estimates for ADG and SCY were 0.44 ± 0.02 and 0.22 ± 0.08, respectively. The annual genetic trend for ADG decreased up to the year of 1996 and increased then on. The phenotypic trend was 9.4 g/day/year
Quintais urbanos de Mirassol D'Oeste-MT, Brasil: uma abordagem etnobotânica Urban homegardens of Mirassol D'Oeste-MT, Brazil: an ethnobotany stady
A home garden is a small track of ground next to or surrounding a house where its residents can cultivate a diversity of plants, whose function is aesthetic, leisure, food, medicinal among others. The aim of this work was to study the floristic composition of urban homegardens in the city of Mirassol D'Oeste, state of Mato Grosso, coordinate 15º45'30"S and 58º16'36"W. For colleting data we interviewed 29 residents using structured and semi-structured interviews; and, simultaneously collected botanical species which we analysed at the Mato Grosso State University Botanical Laboratory, in Cáceres. We made statistical analyses using absolute frequency and relative frequency to quantify and specify the botanical species found in the gardens. We registered a total of 397 ethnobotanical species and grouped 275 taxa in 79 botanical families. The highest numbers among them were 23 species of Solanaceae, 17 Asteraceae, 14 Lamiaceae , 12 Rosaceae and 9 species of Verbenaceae. Food and ornamental attributes represented 35 % of the species and medicinal 29% . Some species had up to four potentialities. From the known plant universe used locally, native species corresponded to 8%. This percentage was considered low when compared to that of the population living in the Pantanal and cerrado areas. This population demonstrated an interface between agricultural tradition and the characteristics of urban-industrial society living in common spaces: the homegardens
Measurements with silicon photomultipliers of dose-rate effects in the radiation damage of plastic scintillator tiles in the CMS hadron endcap calorimeter
Measurements are presented of the reduction of signal output due to radiation damage for two types of plastic scintillator tiles used in the hadron endcap (HE) calorimeter of the CMS detector. The tiles were exposed to particles produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the CERN LHC with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to a delivered luminosity of 50 fb-1. The measurements are based on readout channels of the HE that were instrumented with silicon photomultipliers, and are derived using data from several sources: A laser calibration system, a movable radioactive source, as well as hadrons and muons produced in pp collisions. Results from several irradiation campaigns using 60Co sources are also discussed. The damage is presented as a function of dose rate. Within the range of these measurements, for a fixed dose the damage increases with decreasing dose rate
Azimuthal separation in nearly back-to-back jet topologies in inclusive 2- and 3-jet events in pp collisions at √s=13Te
A measurement for inclusive 2- and 3-jet events of the azimuthal correlation between the two jets with the largest transverse momenta, Δϕ12, is presented. The measurement considers events where the two leading jets are nearly collinear (“back-to-back”) in the transverse plane and is performed for several ranges of the leading jet transverse momentum. Proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13Te and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb-1 are used. Predictions based on calculations using matrix elements at leading-order and next-to-leading-order accuracy in perturbative quantum chromodynamics supplemented with leading-log parton showers and hadronization are generally in agreement with the measurements. Discrepancies between the measurement and theoretical predictions are as large as 15%, mainly in the region 177 ∘&lt; Δϕ12&lt; 180 ∘. The 2- and 3-jet measurements are not simultaneously described by any of models. © 2019, CERN for the benefit of the CMS collaboration
