A Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF) can be an effective solution to abate the particulate matter produced in modern direct injection gasoline engines. The regeneration of this system is critical, since it occurs in oxygen deficiency, but it can be promoted by placing an appropriate catalyst on the filter walls. In this paper, a nanostructured equimolar ceria-praseodymia catalyst, obtained via hydrothermal synthesis, was characterized with complementary techniques (XRD, N2-physisorption, FESEM, XPS, Temperature Programmed Reduction, etc.) and its catalytic performances were investigated in low oxygen availability. Pr-doping significantly affected ceria structure and morphology, and the weakening of the cerium–oxygen bond associated to Pr insertion resulted in a high reducibility. The catalytic activity was explored considering different reactions, namely CO oxidation, ethylene and propylene total oxidation, and soot combustion. Thanks to its capability of releasing active oxygen species, ceria-praseodymia exhibited a remarkable activity and CO2-selectivity at low oxygen concentrations, proving to be a promising catalyst for coated GPFs

4GT) lies in the western part of the Izu fore-arc basin, ~60 km east of the arc-front volcano Aogashima, ~170 km west of the axis of the Izu-Bonin Trench, 1.5 km west of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 792, and at 1776 meters below sea level (mbsl). It was drilled as a 150 m deep geotechnical test hole for potential future deep drilling (5500 meters below seafloor [mbsf]) at proposed Site IBM-4 using the D/V Chikyu. Core from Site U1436 yielded a rich record of Late Pleistocene explosive volcanism, including distinctive black glassy mafic ash layers that may record large-volume eruptions on the Izu arc front. Because of the importance of this discovery, Site U1436 was drilled in three additional holes (U1436B, U1436C, and U1436D), as part of a contingency operation, in an attempt to get better recovery on the black glassy mafic ash layers and enclosing sediments and to better constrain the thickness of the mafic ash layers. IODP Site U1437 is located in the Izu rear arc, ~330 km west of the axis of the IzuBonin Trench and ~90 km west of the arc-front volcanoes Myojinsho and Myojin Knoll, at 2117 mbsl. The primary scientific objective for Site U1437 was to characterize “the missing half of the subduction factory”; this was because numerous ODP/Integrated Ocean Drilling Program sites had been drilled in the arc to fore-arc region (i.e., ODP Site 782A Leg 126), but this was the first site to be drilled in the rear part of the Izu arc. A complete view of the arc system is needed to understand the formation of oceanic arc crust and its evolution into continental crust. Site U1437 on the rear arc had excellent core recovery in Holes U1437B and U1437D, and we succeeded in hanging the longest casing ever in the history of R/V JOIDES Resolution scientific drilling (1085.6 m) in Hole U1437E and cored to 1806.5 mbsf

Increased CD8+ T cell responses to apoptotic T cell-associated antigens in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Here, we evaluated the hypothesis that CD8(+) T cell responses to caspase-cleaved antigens derived from effector T cells undergoing apoptosis, may contribute to multiple sclerosis (MS) immunopathology. METHODS: The percentage of autoreactive CD8(+) T effector cells specific for various apoptotic T cell-associated self-epitopes (apoptotic epitopes) were detected in the peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) by both enzyme-linked immunospot and dextramers of class I molecules complexed with relevant apoptotic epitopes. Moreover, the capacity of dextramer(+) CD8(+) T cells to produce interferon (IFN)-Îł and/or interleukin (IL)-17 in response to the relevant apoptotic epitopes was evaluated by the intracellular cytokine staining. Cross-presentation assay of apoptotic T cells by dendritic cells was also evaluated ex vivo. RESULTS: We found that polyfunctional (IFN-Îł and/or IL-17 producing) autoreactive CD8(+) T cells specific for apoptotic epitopes were represented in MS patients with frequencies significantly higher than in healthy donors. These autoreactive CD8(+) T cells with a strong potential to produce IFN-Îł or IL-17 in response to the relevant apoptotic epitopes were significantly accumulated in the CSF from the same patients. In addition, the frequencies of these autoreactive CD8(+) T cells correlated with the disease disability. Cross-presentation assay revealed that caspase-cleaved cellular proteins are required to activate apoptotic epitope-specific CD8(+) T cells ex vivo. CONCLUSION: Taken together, these data indicate that apoptotic epitope-specific CD8(+) T cells with strong inflammatory potential are recruited at the level of the inflammatory site, where they may be involved in MS immunopathology through the production of high levels of inflammatory cytokines

    Get PDF
Introduction: This study aimed to address therapeutic inertia in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by investigating the potential of early treatment with oral semaglutide. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between October 2021 and April 2022 among specialists treating individuals with T2D. A scientific committee designed a data collection form covering demographics, cardiovascular risk, glucose control metrics, ongoing therapies, and physician judgments on treatment appropriateness. Participants completed anonymous patient questionnaires reflecting routine clinical encounters. The preferred therapeutic regimen for each patient was also identified. Results: The analysis was conducted on 4449 patients initiating oral semaglutide. The population had a relatively short disease duration (42%  60% of patients, and more often than sitagliptin or empagliflozin. Conclusion: The study supports the potential of early implementation of oral semaglutide as a strategy to overcome therapeutic inertia and enhance T2D management

The Women’s Spring movement started in 2015 in Brazil. It is a brand new phenomenon where Brazilian feminists are taking advantage of the potential of the Internet and social media to publicize sexism and demand respect. This thesis investigates this movement through a case study of #primeiroassedio and #meuamigosecreto, with the objective to discover who the cyberactivists are, how cyberactivism happens in that context and if it influences offline life.

A Matrix of the Sex Trade: An analysis of labour relations in prostitution and pornography in HBO’s The Deuce

The feminist and sociological debate of prostitution and pornography is an often polarized one. That seeps into the way media represent these practices and the ways these representations are studied. This thesis moves beyond that divisive debate by looking into labour relations and structures of exploitation through a case study of the first season of HBO’s The Deuce, which is a show about the 1970’s sex trade. This thesis also adds to the growing body of literature of television style, using a combination of Butler’s style analysis and Mittell’s concept of narrative complexity for a dual method approach into the television text. This thesis argues for the importance of style when it comes to analysing television as well as overcoming the dualities of the feminist debate that make complexities of the sex industry invisible, with the aim not only to contribute to the literature of style but assist in the understandings of the sex trade. The analysis presented here shows the details of the different labour relations that are represented in The Deuce and how those relate to issues of abuse, freedom, safety, and drug use in the programme. It also makes clear the exploitation of labour and distribution of surplus in systems that interlock patriarchy, racism and capitalism, with the involvement of the Mafia and the Police for a growth in profits. The representation of pornography in the show also illuminates the differences in commodification and the transition period in the beginning of the Golden Age of pornography. The show also represents pornography as a safe work environment, where the only form of abuse comes from the labour relation between pimps and prostitutes. The use of style complements the narrative by providing a realistic storyworld for the viewer who peeps into the lives of these characters and show an interconnectedness between people and systems which extrapolate the micro understanding and theorization of prostitution as simply female choice and agency

Future Perspective for Bio-Energy Production in the Province of Turin

The present work investigates waste management in the Province of Turin and discusses different policy instruments, taking into account the potential of biogas obtained from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), separated source collection, livestock effluents and energy crops. MSW from a large Turin landfill can produce 98.8 kWhe/t and the energy yearly produced correspond to 3.85% of the domestic requirements for the whole province. As far as the separated source collection is concerned, a substantial decrease in the production of biogas in landfills has been observed. The organic fraction instead could be sent to anaeroblic digestion plants to produce energy. Finally, waste from livestock and agricultural products could make a significant contribution to energy recovery (even more than 5% of the domestic requirements
