Simulating accelerated atoms coupled to a quantum field

    Get PDF
We show an analogy between static quantum emitters coupled to a single mode of a quantum field and accelerated Unruh-DeWitt detectors. We envision a way to simulate a variety of relativistic quantum field settings beyond the reach of current computational power, such as high number of qubits coupled to a quantum field following arbitrary non-inertial trajectories. Our scheme may be implemented with trapped ions and circuit QED set-ups.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, revtex 4-

Gravitational collapse of a magnetized fermion gas with finite temperature

We examine the dynamics of a self--gravitating magnetized electron gas at finite temperature near the collapsing singularity of a Bianchi-I spacetime. Considering a general and appropriate and physically motivated initial conditions, we transform Einstein--Maxwell field equations into a complete and self--consistent dynamical system amenable for numerical work. The resulting numerical solutions reveal the gas collapsing into both, isotropic ("point-like") and anisotropic ("cigar-like") singularities, depending on the initial intensity of the magnetic field. We provide a thorough study of the near collapse behavior and interplay of all relevant state and kinematic variables: temperature, expansion scalar, shear scalar, magnetic field, magnetization and energy density. A significant qualitative difference in the behavior of the gas emerges in the temperature range Tsim104K\hbox{T} sim10^{4}\hbox{K} and T107K\hbox{T}\sim 10^{7}\hbox{K}.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1211.598

Pioneering the use of a plenoptic Adaptive Optics system for Free Space Optical Communications

Tesis doctoral en Astrofísica, fecha de lectura 30 de Septiembre de 2019In this thesis, an Adaptive Optics proposal is presented and experimentally verified at both laboratory and telescope, with the objective of compensating the atmospheric aberrations in the uplink beam and, therefore, ameliorate Free Space Optical Communication links performance and the generation of Laser Guide Stars for conventional AO systems. The research focuses on the active correction of Ground to Space laser beams (optical links and artificial stars), as downlink communications resemble conventional astronomical observations when applying Adaptive Optics techniques: the light is originated in space and it travels downwards through the atmosphere to the receiver (where the AO system would be placed), whereas the uplink needs to be corrected before existing the launching telescope by measuring the atmospheric wavefront with an a-priori unknown reference source. The uplink pre-compensation entails a scientific and technological challenge. The uplink correction problem was deeply studied by the formulation of all possible solutions, which are properly modelled and simulated with an already existing Adaptive Optics Matlab toolbox, into which new functionalities were coded and integrated (upwards Fresnel propagation, new concept wavefront sensor, etc.). Based on the simulation outcome, the corresponding requirements were formulated for the design of an uplink corrector AO system from the very last element to the control strategy. After the proper hardware acquisition (of both COTS elements and custom-built components), the uplink corrector laboratory scale prototype was built and integrated at IAC laboratory facilities. Finally from January 2019 to May 2019, the Uplink Wavefront Corrector System was integrated at the Optical Ground Station telescope at Teide Observatory, successfully demonstrating the uplink precompensation of the laser beam

The marine nitrogen cycle is responsible for two climate feedbacks in the Earth System. Firstly, it modulates thefixed nitrogen pool available for phytoplankton growth and hence it modulates in part the strength of thebiological pump, one of the mechanisms contributing to the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2. Secondly, thenitrogen cycle produces a powerful greenhouse gas and ozone (O3) depletion agent called nitrous oxide (N2O).Future changes of the nitrogen cycle in response to global warming, ocean deoxygenation and oceanacidification are largely unknown. Processes such as N2-fixation, nitrification, denitrification and N2Oproduction will experience changes under the simultaneous effect of these three stressors. Global oceanbiogeochemical models allow us to study such interactions. Using NEMO-PISCES and the CMIP5 modelensemble we project changes in year 2100 under the business-as-usual high CO2 emissions scenario in globalscale N2-fixation rates, nitrification rates, N2O production and N2O sea-to-air fluxes adding CO2 sensitivefunctions into the model parameterizations. Second order effects due to the combination of global warming intandem with ocean acidification on the fixed nitrogen pool, primary productivity and N2O radiative forcingfeedbacks are also evaluated in this thesis.

    Get PDF

c&d-learning implementation architecture: Adapting e-learning to developing countries

    Get PDF
From the educational point of view, the most widespread method in developing countries is on-site education. Technical and economic resources cannot support conventional distance learning infrastructures and it is even worse for courses in universities. They usually suffer a lack of qualified faculty staff, especially in technical degrees. The literature suggest that e-learning is a suitable solution for this problem, but its methods are developed attending to educational necessities of the First World and cannot be applied directly to other contexts. The proposed methodology is a variant of traditional e-learning adapted to the needs of developing countries. E-learning for Cooperation and Development (c&d-learning) is oriented to be used for educational institutions without adequate technical or human resources. In this paper we describe the c&d-learning implementation architecture based on three main phases: hardware, communication and software; e.g. computer and technical equipping, internet accessing and e-learning platform adaptation. Proper adaptation of educational contents to c&d-learning is discussed and a real case of application in which the authors are involved is described: the Ngozi University at Burundi

Dynamics of a self--gravitating magnetized source

We consider a magnetized degenerate gas of fermions as the matter source of a homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I spacetime with a Kasner--like metric. We examine the dynamics of this system by means of a qualitative and numerical study of Einstein-Maxwell field equations which reduce to a non--linear autonomous system. For all initial conditions and combinations of free parameters the gas evolves from an initial anisotropic singularity into an asymptotic state that is completely determined by a stable attractor. Depending on the initial conditions the anisotropic singularity is of the ``cigar'' or ``plate'' types.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
