The diversification-performance relationship in Spanish firms : does the CEO´S behaviour style matter?
The agency-stewardship theoretical framework posits that CEOs may
choose to act as agents or as stewards. CEOs as agents are economically rational
individuals driven by self-interest, whereas CEOs as stewards are self-actualizing
individuals that behave pro-organizationally. Our study extends this framework to
analyze whether the CEO´s behavior style affects the diversification-performance
relationship. After applying Heckman´s method on a sample of Spanish firms, our
results verify that diversification affects positively on firm performance and such
effect is significantly strong when this strategy is managed and implemented by a
CEO inclined to behave as steward.peer-reviewe
NDT to identify biological damage in wood
Nondestructive techniques are widely used to assess existing timber structures. The models proposed for these methods are usually performed in the laboratory using small clear wood specimens. But in real situations many anomalies, defects and biological damage are found in wood. In these cases the existing models only indicate that the values are outside normality without providing any other information. To solve this problem, a study of non-destructive probing methods for wood was performed, testing the behaviour of four different techniques (penetration resistance, pullout resistance, drill resistance and chip drill extraction) on wood samples with different biological damage, simulating an in-situ test. The wood samples were obtained from existing Spanish timber structures with biotic damage caused by borer insects, termites, brown rot and white rot. The study concludes that all of the methods offer more or less detailed information about the degree of deterioration of wood, but that the first two methods (penetration and pullout resistance) cannot distinguish between pathologies. On the other hand, drill resistance and chip drill extraction make it possible to differentiate pathologies and even to identify species or damage location. Finally, the techniques used were compared to characterize their advantages and disadvantages
The influence of sensor placement on in-situ ultrasound wave velocity measurement.
Ultrasound wave velocity was measured in 30 pieces of Spanish Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), 90 x 140 mm in cross-section and 4 m long. Five different sensor placement arrangements were used: end to end (V0), face to opposite face, edge to opposite edge, face to same face and edge to same edge. The pieces were successively shortened to 3, 2 and 1 m, in order to obtain these velocities and their ratios to reference value V0 for different lengths and angles with respect to the piece axis for the crossed measurements. The velocity obtained in crossed measurements is lower than V0. A correction coefficient for crossed velocities is proposed, depending on the angle, to adjust them to the V0 benchmark. The velocities measured on a surface, are also lower than V0, and their ratio with respect to V0 is close to 0.97 for distances equal to or greater than 18 times the depth of the beam
Excited State Pathways Leading to Formation of Adenine Dimers
International audienceThe reaction intermediate in the path leading to UV-induced formation ofadenine dimers A=A and AA* is identified for the first time quantum mechanically, usingPCM/TD-DFT calculations on (dA)2 (dA: 2′deoxyadenosine). In parallel, its fingerprint isdetected in the absorption spectra recorded on the millisecond time-scale for the singlestrand (dA)20 (dA: 2′deoxyadenosine)
Cell Signaling in Neuronal Stem Cells
The defining characteristic of neural stem cells (NSCs) is their ability to multiply through
symmetric divisions and proliferation, and differentiation by asymmetric divisions, thus giving rise
to different types of cells of the central nervous system (CNS). A strict temporal space control of the
NSC differentiation is necessary, because its alterations are associated with neurological dysfunctions
and, in some cases, death. This work reviews the current state of the molecular mechanisms that
regulate the transcription in NSCs, organized according to whether the origin of the stimulus that
triggers the molecular cascade in the CNS is internal (intrinsic factors) or whether it is the result of
the microenvironment that surrounds the CNS (extrinsic factors)
New chromium steel grade for creep applications
In this study, a novel Chromium steel grade (COIN2) is produced as a result of a new steel composition and an innovative heat treatment. This new steel grade COIN2 evolves from the P92 steel grade and other novel steel grade recently created by the authors (COIN), and represents an enhancement of hardness, tensile properties, and creep behaviour with respect to them, which validates the metallurgical strategy used for further research in order to increase the efficiency of power plants and thus reduce the CO2 emissions. The characterization reveals a significant property improvement with the innovative thermal treatment, contributing to the production of a novel and more competitive steel grade for creep applications. This research was funded by the Basque Government under the ELKARTEK programme [KK-2019/00074]

Deciphering the pH-dependence of ground- and excited-state equilibria of thienoguanine
The thienoguanine nucleobase (thGb) is an isomorphic fluorescent analogue of guanine. In aqueous buffer at neutral pH, thGb exists as a mixture of two ground-state H1 and H3 keto-amino tautomers with distinct absorption and emission spectra and high quantum yield. In this work, we performed the first systematic photophysical characterization of thGb as a function of pH (2 to 12). Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopies, supplemented with theoretical calculations, enabled us to identify three additional thGb forms, resulting from pH-dependent ground-state and excited-state reactions. Moreover, a thorough analysis allowed us to retrieve their individual absorption and emission spectra as well as the equilibrium constants which govern their interconversion. From these data, the complete photoluminescence pathway of thGb in aqueous solution and its dependence as a function of pH was deduced. As the identified forms differ by their spectra and fluorescence lifetime, thGb could be used as a probe for sensing local pH changes under acidic conditions
Experiencia clínica del tratamiento con onabotulinumtoxin A en pacientes con migraña refractaria
To analyse our experience in the treatment of refractory chronic migraine,
episodic frequent refractory migraine (>= 10 days/month), with onabotulinumtoxin
A (OnabotA). PATIENTS AND METHODS. Retrospective analysis of patients with
refractory migraine who underwent, at least two sessions of OnabotA pericranial
injections following the PREEMPT protocol between 2008 and 2012. The efficacy of
OnabotA was evaluated comparing the basal situation with 12-16 weeks after the
second session. We analysed the subjective improvement of the patients, number of
days with headache, preventive and abortive drugs consumption, and adverse
effects. RESULTS. Forty-one patients (37 women, 4 male) were identified. 65.8%
patients experienced subjective improvement after OnabotA treatment. 36.58%
responded (reduction of > 50% in headache days). Differences between days with
headache before the first session (24.5 +/- 7.3), and 12-16 weeks after the
second session (17.4 +/- 11.6), as well as the differences between the number of
abortive drugs taken before the first session (26.8 +/- 23.1) and 12-16 weeks
after the second session (16.7 +/- 19.3), were statistically significant (p <
0.001). Subgroups analysis showed that all differences were significant, except
for the reduction of the number of days with headache in patients with episodic
frequent refractory migraine. CONCLUSION. Our work shows that treatment with
OnabotA is safe and useful in patients with episodic and chronic refractory
migraine, including those patients with medication overuse headache
