A Hybrid Neural Network and Virtual Reality System for Spatial Language Processing

    Get PDF
This paper describes a neural network model for the study of spatial language. It deals with both geometric and functional variables, which have been shown to play an important role in the comprehension of spatial prepositions. The network is integrated with a virtual reality interface for the direct manipulation of geometric and functional factors. The training uses experimental stimuli and data. Results show that the networks reach low training and generalization errors. Cluster analyses of hidden activation show that stimuli primarily group according to extra-geometrical variables

Assistive Technology for Elderly Care: An Overview

    Get PDF
Global demographic changes have resulted in a growing technological demand to meet the arisen social needs. In particular, the increasingly ageing population requires assistive technologies to stay at home for longer independently while receiving continuous healthcare. In this sense, a wide academic and industrial research is taking place, introducing these technologies in hospitals and rehabilitation centres. This paper aims at providing an overview of research projects for elderly care and assistance, focusing on cognitive and robot assistants due to their popularity in the area. More precisely, physical and/or cognitive rehabilitation are presented. This paper also discusses their limitations and the open challenges to be tackled in order to be successfully integrated in our society

Discrete-Event Simulation of the Establishment of a Bare Beachhead for Long-Term Joint Logistics over the Shore (JLOTS) Operations

    Get PDF
The United States military uses Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) operations to move soldiers, vehicles, and equipment across the globe for military and humanitarian missions. These logistics operations can only be accomplished through cooperation between commanders in all services.  The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center is developing a tool to analyze a set of early entry alternatives to optimize mission effectives and efficiencies in order to facilitate assured mobility and freedom of movement. This program is currently being developed under the name Planning Logistics Analysis Network System (PLANS). PLANS comprehensively covers air, land, and sea transportation infrastructure, regions of avoidance, and more. This research addresses a gap in strategic and operational planning by modeling the establishment of JLOTS operations on bare beach environments. The West Point developed discrete event simulation will determine the amount of time it takes to prepare a beach to sustain JLOTS operations under varying environmental and operational conditions

Grasp force estimation from the transient EMG using high-density surface recordings.

Objective: Understanding the neurophysiological signals underlying voluntary motor control and decoding them for prosthesis control are among the major challenges in applied neuroscience and bioengineering. Usually, information from the electrical activity of residual forearm muscles (i.e. the electromyogram, EMG) is used to control different functions of a prosthesis. Noteworthy, forearm EMG patterns at the onset of a contraction (transient phase) have shown to contain predictive information about upcoming grasps. However, decoding this information for the estimation of grasp force was so far overlooked. Approach: High Density-EMG signals (192 channels) were recorded from twelve participants performing a pick-and-lift task. The final grasp force was estimated offline using linear regressors, with four subsets of channels and ten features obtained using three channels-features selection methods. Two different evaluation metrics (absolute error and R2), complemented with statistical analysis, were used to select the optimal configuration of the parameters. Different windows of data starting at the grasp force (GF) onset were compared to determine the time at which the grasp force can be ascertained from the EMG signals. Main results: The prediction accuracy improved by increasing the window length from the moment of the onset and kept improving until the steady state at which a plateau of performances was reached. With our methodology, estimations of the grasp force through 16 EMG channels reached an absolute error of 2.52% the maximum voluntary force using only transient information and 1.99% with the first 500ms of data following the onset. Significance: The final GF estimation from transient EMG was comparable to the one obtained using steady state data, confirming our hypothesis that the transient phase contains information about the final grasp force. This result paves the way to fast online myoelectric controllers capable of decoding grasp strength from the very early portion of the EMG signal

Pediatric wound care: Establishing a consensus group to develop clinical practice guidelines

    Get PDF
Introduction. Wound care practices for neonatal and pediatric patients have created a lack of standardized evidence-based guidelines for treatments in clinical practices. Unfortunately, published clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of wounds in pediatric populations is limited. Consensus groups are used to develop clinical guidelines which define key aspects of the quality of health care, particularly appropriate indications for interventions. The aim of this initiative was to conduct the first two steps of the guideline development process, and to report on the findings from the expert consensus group for pediatric wound care. Methods. The goal was to recruit a multidisciplinary team that consisted of board certified Pediatric Plastic and Pediatric General Surgeons, WOCN, and research specialists active in the International Society of Pediatric Wound Care (ISPEW). All recruited individuals were emailed and invited to participate. For this study, an adapted questionnaire was created to assess eligibility criteria, information sources, systematic review database search strategies, study selection criteria including keywords. Data was collected on the clinical consensus group’s experience with clinical guideline development, and other clinically significant domains for which the the evidence should be evaluated. Results. All six invited individuals agreed to participate. 100% of respondents provided the number of years in their current role within their respective institutions and their length of experience with pediatric wound care management. 17% of respondents had 7 to 10 years in their current role, while 66% had more than 10 years practice in pediatric wound care. Domains identified as important to consider included: Cost of Product/Treatment Duration of Treatment, Ease of Applying Product/Performing Treatment, Accessibility of Product, Storage of Product, Length of Time to Apply Product/Perform Treatment. Discussion. The agreed-upon domains from our study align with previously published consensus group studies. We identified several domains to inform a future systematic review. At this time, no systematic review has been published that has been guided by consensus group domains and search terms for pediatric wound care. Conclusion. Through the use of this consensus group and conducted surveys, we identified the primary domains necessary to complete a practice-informed systematic review, as well as other key domains that are important in clinical pediatric wound care management
