    Semi-Rigid (Aminomethyl) Piperidine-Based Pentadentate Ligands for Mn(II) Complexation

    Two pentadentate ligands built on the 2-aminomethylpiperidine structure and bearing two tertiary amino and three oxygen donors (three carboxylates in the case of AMPTA and two carboxylates and one phenolate for AMPDA-HB) were developed for Mn(II) complexation. Equilibrium studies on the ligands and the Mn(II) complexes were carried out using pH potentiometry, 1H-NMR spectroscopy and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The Mn complexes that were formed by the two ligands were more stable than the Mn complexes of other pentadentate ligands but with a lower pMn than Mn(EDTA) and Mn(CDTA) (pMn for Mn(AMPTA) = 7.89 and for Mn(AMPDA-HB) = 7.07). 1H and 17O-NMR relaxometric studies showed that the two Mn-complexes were q = 1 with a relaxivity value of 3.3 mM-1 s-1 for Mn(AMPTA) and 3.4 mM-1 s-1 for Mn(AMPDA-HB) at 20 MHz and 298 K. Finally, the geometries of the two complexes were optimized at the DFT level, finding an octahedral coordination environment around the Mn2+ ion, and MD simulations were performed to monitor the distance between the Mn2+ ion and the oxygen of the coordinated water molecule to estimate its residence time, which was in good agreement with that determined using the 17O NMR data

    Measuring Transport Coefficients in Heterogeneous and Hierarchical Heat Transfer Devices

    Experimental determination of transport coefficients, in particular internal heat transfer coefficients, in heterogeneous and hierarchical heat transfer devices such as compact heat exchangers and high surface density heat sinks has posed a persistent challenge for designers. This study presents a unique treatment of the experimental determination of such design data. A new combined experimental and computational method for determining the internal heat transfer coefficient within a heterogeneous and hierarchical heat transfer medium is explored and results are obtained for the case of cross flow of air over staggered cylinders to provide validation of the method. Along with appropriate pressure drop measurements, these measurements allow for thermal-fluid modeling of a heat exchanger by closing the volume averaging theory (VAT)-based equations governing transport phenomena in porous media, which have been rigorously derived from the lower-scale Navier-Stokes and thermal energy equations. To experimentally obtain the internal heat transfer coefficient the solid phase is subjected to a step change in heat generation rate via induction heating, while the fluid flows through under steady flow conditions. The transient fluid phase temperature response is measured. The heat transfer coefficient is then determined by comparing the results of a numerical simulation based on the VAT model with the experimental results. The friction factor is determined through pressure drop measurements, as is usually done. With the lower-scale heat transfer coefficient and friction factor measured, the VAT-based equations governing the transport phenomena in the heat transfer device are closed and readily solved. Several configurations of staggered cylinders in cross flow were selected for this study. Results for the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor are compared to widely accepted correlations and agreement is observed, lending validation to this experimental method and analysis procedure. It is expected that a more convenient and accurate tool for experimental closure of the VAT-based equations modeling transport in heterogeneous and hierarchical media, which comes down to measuring the transport coefficients, will allow for easier modeling and subsequent optimization of high performance compact heat exchangers and heat sinks for which design data does not already exist

    Coordination chemistry of amide-functionalised tetraazamacrocycles: structural, relaxometric and cytotoxicity studies

    Three different tetraazamacrocyclic ligands containing four amide substituents that feature groups (namely allyl, styryl and propargyl groups) suitable for polymerisation have been synthesised. Gadolinium(III) complexes of these three ligands have been prepared as potential monomers for the synthesis of polymeric MRI contrast agents. To assess the potential of these monomers as MRI contrast agents, their relaxation enhancement properties and cytotoxicity have been determined. A europium(III) complex of one of these ligands (with propargyl substituents) is also presented together with its PARACEST properties. In addition, to gain further insight into the coordination chemistry of the tetra-propargyl substituted ligand, the corresponding zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes have been prepared. The X-ray crystal structures of the tetra-propargyl ligand and its corresponding gadolinium(III), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes are also presented

    Reducing losses in food production in Brazil: its impacts on the economy, land-use change and greenhouse gas emissions

    The reduction of food losses is an important measure to ensure food security, as it affects food availability, the environment and economic development. To this end, it is necessary to reduce waste from production to final consumption. This paper analyzes the economic impacts in Brazil from reducing food losses at the production stage between 2021 and 2030. In addition, it assesses the effects of policies on land allocation and its consequences in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. A computable general-equilibrium model was used to estimate the consequences arising from the reduction of losses on the different sectors of the economy as a result of the application of shocks of productivity gains to the production of some of the main crops in Brazil. The results show that reduction of waste is feasible and beneficial for the Brazilian economy, as it promotes regional and national economic growth, which leads to an increase in consumption by households and the government, and to investments and production levels. One of the main results identified was the Borlaug effect, since different agricultural activities grew in volume by increasing productivity on current cropland, thereby avoiding the conversion of large areas of native vegetation into arable land. Furthermore, the results may offer a new perspective on this topic to countries with economies similar to Brazil's, particular since only a few studies use this approach exist

    Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA): a population based gap analysis of trauma patients in England and Wales

    INTRODUCTION: Non-compressible torso haemorrhage (NCTH) carries a high mortality in trauma as many patients exsanguinate prior to definitive haemorrhage control. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is an adjunct that has the potential to bridge patients to definitive haemostasis. However, the proportion of trauma patients in whom REBOA may be utilised is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a population based analysis of 2012-2013 Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) data. We identified the number of patients in whom REBOA may have been utilised, defined by an Abbreviated Injury Scale score ≥3 to abdominal solid organs, abdominal or pelvic vasculature, pelvic fracture with ring disruption or proximal traumatic lower limb amputation, together with a systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg. Patients with non-compressible haemorrhage in the mediastinum, axilla, face or neck were excluded. RESULTS: During 2012-2013, 72 677 adult trauma patients admitted to hospitals in England and Wales were identified. 397 patients had an indication(s) and no contraindications for REBOA with evidence of haemorrhagic shock: 69% men, median age 43 years and median Injury Severity Score 32. Overall mortality was 32%. Major trauma centres (MTCs) received the highest concentration of potential REBOA patients, and would be anticipated to receive a patient in whom REBOA may be utilised every 95 days, increasing to every 46 days in the 10 MTCs with the highest attendance of this injury type. CONCLUSIONS: This TARN database analysis has identified a small group of severely injured, resource intensive patients with a highly lethal injury that is theoretically amenable to REBOA. The highest density of these patients is seen at MTCs, and as such a planned evaluation of REBOA should be further considered in these hospitals

    Collective nature of orbital excitations in layered cuprates in the absence of apical oxygens

    We have investigated the 3d orbital excitations in CaCuO2 (CCO), Nd2CuO4 (NCO) and La2CuO4 (LCO) using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In LCO they behave as well-localized excitations, similarly to several other cuprates. On the contrary, in CCO and NCO the dxy orbital clearly disperse, pointing to a collective character of this excitation (orbiton) in compounds without apical oxygen. We ascribe the origin of the dispersion as stemming from a substantial next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) orbital superexchange. Such an exchange leads to the liberation of orbiton from its coupling to magnons, which is associated with the orbiton hopping between nearest neighbor copper sites. We show that the exceptionally large NNN orbital superexchange can be traced back to the absence of apical oxygens suppressing the charge transfer energy.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
