    Emotional valence and physical space: Limits of interaction

    According to the body-specificity hypothesis, people associate positive things with the side of space that corresponds to their dominant hand, and negative things with the side corresponding to their non-dominant hand. Our aim was to find out whether this association holds also true for a response time study employing linguistic stimuli, and whether such an association is activated automatically. Four experiments explored this association using positive and negative words. In Exp. 1, right-handers made a lexical judgment by pressing a left or right key. Attention was not explicitly drawn to the valence of the stimuli. No valence-by-side interaction emerged. In Exp. 2 and 3, right-handers and left-handers made a valence judgment by pressing a left or a right key. A valence-by-side interaction emerged: For positive words, responses were faster when participants responded with their dominant hand, whereas for negative words, responses were faster for the non-dominant hand. Exp. 4 required a valence judgment without stating an explicit mapping of valence and side. No valence-by-side interaction emerged. The experiments provide evidence for an association between response side and valence, which, however, does not seem to be activated automatically but rather requires a task with an explicit response mapping to occur

    The body-specificity hypothesis (Casasanto, 2009) associates positive emotional valence and the space surrounding the dominant hand, and negative valence and the space surrounding the nondominant hand. This effect has not only been found for manual responses, but also for the left and right side. In the present study, we investigated whether this compatibility effect still shows when hand and side carry incongruent information, and whether it is then related to hand or to side. We conducted two experiments which used an incongruent hand – response key assignment, that is, participants had their hands crossed. Participants were instructed to respond with their right vs. left hand (Experiment 1) or with the right vs. left key (Experiment 2). In both experiments, a compatibility effect related to hand emerged, indicating that the association between hand and valence overrides the one between side and valence when hand and side carry contradicting information

    Microbiota alterations in proline metabolism impact depression

However, the field is dominated by underpowered studies focusing on major depression not addressing microbiome functionality, compositional nature, or confounding factors. We applied a multi-omics approach combining pre-clinical models with three human cohorts including patients with mild depression. Microbial functions and metabolites converging onto glutamate/GABA metabolism, particularly proline, were linked to depression. High proline consumption was the dietary factor with the strongest impact on depression. Whole-brain dynamics revealed rich club network disruptions associated with depression and circulating proline. Proline supplementation in mice exacerbated depression along with microbial translocation. Human microbiota transplantation induced an emotionally impaired phenotype in mice and alterations in GABA-, proline-, and extracellular matrix-related prefrontal cortex genes. RNAi-mediated knockdown of proline and GABA transporters in Drosophila and mono-association with L. plantarum, a high GABA producer, conferred protection against depression-like states.     Arrays planares basados en el elemento strip-slot complementario

    Recently, the authors introduced a novel planar radiating element that exploits the characteristics of the slotline microstrip coupling to obtain a microstrip-fed slot with broadband matching. This paper reviews the main characteristics of the so-called complementary strip-slot element and comments on its use for building series-fed planar arrays. In this way, two different configurations of series-fed arrays are described: a traveling-wave array of five elements and a circularly-polarized ring array with four elements.     The Complementary Strip-Slot: From the Unit-Cell of Artificial Transmission Lines to the Basic Element of Novel Antennas

    The complementary strip-slot radiating element and its applications are reviewed. The element is a modified version of the conventional microstrip-fed slot that presents very broad matching. Its inherent lattice equivalent circuit, its use as unit-cell of artificial transmission lines and its utility as radiating element are described. Promising experimental results for prototypes of a phased uniform array, a sequentially-rotated ring array and a log-periodic array based on the element for microwave frequencies are included.Universidad de Málaga.     Distribución de subtipos moleculares de adenocarcinoma de pulmón y resultados clínicos en un centro de Argentina

    La prevalencia de alteraciones en oncogenes en adenocarcinoma de pulmón varía en nuestra región. El objetivo fue describir la prevalencia de mutaciones en KRAS, BRAF y EGFR y las translocaciones de ALK en pacientes con adenocarcinoma de pulmón y estudiar la supervivencia de acuerdo a subtipos moleculares. Se incluyeron pacientes con biopsias adecuadas para el estudio. Se evaluó el estado mutacional de KRAS, BRAF y EGFR por secuenciación con la técnica de Sanger. Las translocaciones de ALK se estudiaron por hibridación in situ por fluorescencia (FISH) e inmunohistoquimica (IHQ) contra ALK (clones D5F3 y 5A4). De 118 pacientes evaluados, se incluyeron 84 (72%) con análisis molecular completo. Se detectaron mutaciones de KRAS en 16 muestras (19%), EGFR en 11 (13%), y BRAF en 1 muestra (1%). Se detectaron rearreglos de ALK en 3 muestras (4%). La mediana de seguimiento de los pacientes fue de 42.4 [rango intercuatilo (RIC): 27.0-64.2] meses. Globalmente, la mediana de supervivencia en la población fue 10.3 [RIC: 5.6-20.2] meses y fue de 10.8 [RIC: 6.0 20.3] meses en pacientes sin alteraciones moleculares detectables. La mediana de supervivencia de los pacientes con mutación en KRAS fue de 9.6 [RIC: 3.7-16.1] meses (HR: 1.08; p = 0.82) y 32.5 [RIC: 19.6-38.4] meses en el grupo con rearreglos de ALK o mutaciones en EGFR tratados con inhibidores de tirosina quinasa (HR: 0.27; p = 0.03). En conclusión, la prevalencia de alteraciones moleculares en nuestra población fue similar a otros países occidentales.The prevalence of relevant oncogenic drivers in lung adenocarcinoma varies in our region and data on clinical outcomes is scarce. The objective of the study was to describe the prevalence of KRAS, BRAF and EGFR mutations and ALK translocations in patients with advanced lung adenocarcinoma, and to depict the clinical outcome according to treatment strategies. Patients with adequate tumor biopsy sampling were included. KRAS, BRAF and EGFR mutations were studied by Sanger sequencing. ALK translocations were studied by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunohistochemistry (IH) with antibodies against ALK with clones D5F3 and 5A4. Informed consent was signed by 118 patients and 84 (72%) with complete molecular analysis were included. KRAS mutations were detected in 16 samples (19%), EGFR in 11 (13%), 9 of them conferring sensitivity to EGFR inhibitors, and BRAF mutations in 1 (1%). ALK translocations were detected in 3 samples (4%). Median follow-up was 42.4 [interquartile range (IQR): 27.0-64.2] months. Globally, median overall survival was 10.3 [IQR: 5.6-20.2] months. Median survival was 10.8 [IQR: 6.0-20.3] months in the group of patients without detectable molecular alteration, 9.6 [IQR: 3.7-16.1] months in KRAS mutant population (HR: 1.08; p = 0.82) and 32.5 [IQR: 19.6-38.4] months in patients with ALK translocations or sensitizing EGFR mutated tumors treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (HR: 0.27; p = 0.03). In conclusion, the prevalence of molecular alterations and outcomes in our population is similar to that reported in other studies in Western countries.Fil: Recondo, Gonzalo.     Multi-decadal environmental change in the Barents Sea recorded by seal teeth

This work resulted from the ARISE project, part of the Changing Arctic Ocean programme.Multiple environmental forcings, such as warming and changes in ocean circulation and nutrient supply, are affecting the base of Arctic marine ecosystems, with cascading effects on the entire food web through bottom-up control. Stable nitrogen isotopes (δ15N) can be used to detect and unravel the impact of these forcings on this unique ecosystem, if the many processes that affect the δ15N values are constrained. Combining unique 60-year records from compound specific δ15N biomarkers on harp seal teeth alongside state-of-the-art ocean modelling, we observed a significant decline in the δ15N values at the base of the Barents Sea food web from 1951 to 2012. This strong and persistent decadal trend emerges due to the combination of anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen deposition in the Atlantic, increased northward transport of Atlantic water through Arctic gateways and local feedbacks from increasing Arctic primary production. Our results suggest that the Arctic ecosystem has been responding to anthropogenically induced local and remote drivers, linked to changing ocean biology, chemistry and physics, for at least 60 years. Accounting for these trends in δ15N values at the base of the food web is essential to accurately detect ecosystem restructuring in this rapidly changing environment.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Relaxation and Metastability in the RandomWalkSAT search procedure

    An analysis of the average properties of a local search resolution procedure for the satisfaction of random Boolean constraints is presented. Depending on the ratio alpha of constraints per variable, resolution takes a time T_res growing linearly (T_res \sim tau(alpha) N, alpha < alpha_d) or exponentially (T_res \sim exp(N zeta(alpha)), alpha > alpha_d) with the size N of the instance. The relaxation time tau(alpha) in the linear phase is calculated through a systematic expansion scheme based on a quantum formulation of the evolution operator. For alpha > alpha_d, the system is trapped in some metastable state, and resolution occurs from escape from this state through crossing of a large barrier. An annealed calculation of the height zeta(alpha) of this barrier is proposed.     Nivel de Satisfacción Estética en Pacientes Sometidas a Cirugía Reconstructiva Secundaria a Cáncer de Mama, con Implante Expansor Tipo Becker

    This study included 16 female patients who had undergone unilateral or bilateral breast cancer surgery. The aim of this study is to compare the relationship of self-perception after Becker-type expander placement in patients operated on between August 2018 and January 2020, in the private and public sector, to quantify the level of satisfaction of patients who underwent breast reconstruction after breast cancer, to know what were the main results that they perceived when undergoing this surgical procedure, to know the emotional development of the patient in the short and medium term, as well as to offer future generations of postoperative patients a broad and objective vision for decision making, regarding the placement of this expander type implant. We have a total of 5 patients with a value of less than 70% in the overall average satisfaction survey. We have a total of 11 patients with an overall average greater than 70%. The expected value for these satisfaction percentages is 4.8 patients with overall satisfaction less than 70%.En éste estudio se incluyeron 16 pacientes de sexo femenino, postoperadas de cáncer de mama unilateral o bilateralmente. &nbsp;El objetivo de éste estudio es comparar la relación de la autopercepción posterior a la colocación del expansor tipo Becker en pacientes operadas en periodo de agosto de 2018 a enero de 2020, en el medio particular y público,&nbsp; cuantificar el nivel de satisfacción de las pacientes al someterse a esta reconstrucción mamaria posterior a padecer cáncer de mama, conocer cuáles fueron los principales resultados que ellas percibieron al someterse a este procedimiento quirúrgico, conocer el desarrollo emocional de la paciente a corto y mediano plazo, así como ofrecer a futuras generaciones de pacientes posoperadas una visión amplia y objetiva para la toma de decisiones, en cuanto a la colocación de este implante tipo expansor. Contamos con un total de 5 pacientes con un valor menor al 70% en el promedio global de la satisfacción de las encuestas. Contamos con un total de 11 pacientes con un promedio global mayor al 70%. El valor esperado para estos porcentajes de satisfacción es de 4.8 pacientes con satisfacción global menor al 70% (30%) y 11.2 pacientes con satisfacción global mayor al 70% (70%)
