Simulation of Networked Control Systems Using TrueTime
This paper gives a brief introduction to the TrueTime simulator and then gives several examples on how TrueTime can be used to simulate networked control systems. Among the examples are time-triggered and event-based networked control and AODV routing in wireless ad-hoc networks
Severity as a Priority Setting Criterion: Setting a Challenging Research Agenda
Priority setting in health care is ubiquitous and health authorities are increasingly
recognising the need for priority setting guidelines to ensure efficient, fair, and
equitable resource allocation. While cost-effectiveness concerns seem to dominate
many policies, the tension between utilitarian and deontological concerns is salient
to many, and various severity criteria appear to fill this gap. Severity, then, must be
subjected to rigorous ethical and philosophical analysis. Here we first give a brief
history of the path to today’s severity criteria in Norway and Sweden. The Scandinavian
perspective on severity might be conducive to the international discussion,
given its long-standing use as a priority setting criterion, despite having reached
rather different conclusions so far. We then argue that severity can be viewed as a
multidimensional concept, drawing on accounts of need, urgency, fairness, duty to
save lives, and human dignity. Such concerns will often be relative to local mores,
and the weighting placed on the various dimensions cannot be expected to be fixed.
Thirdly, we present what we think are the most pertinent questions to answer about
severity in order to facilitate decision making in the coming years of increased scarcity,
and to further the understanding of underlying assumptions and values that go
into these decisions. We conclude that severity is poorly understood, and that the
topic needs substantial further inquiry; thus we hope this article may set a challenging
and important research agenda
Simulation of Wireless Networked Control Systems
Embedded systems are becoming increasingly networked and are deployed in application areas that require close interaction with their physical environment. Examples include distributed mobile agents and wireless sensor/actuator networks. The complexity of these applications make co-simulation a necessary tool during system development. This paper presents a simulation environment that facilitates simulation of computer nodes and communication networks interacting with the continuous-time dynamics of the real world. Features of the simulator include interrupt handling, task scheduling, wired and wireless communication, local clocks, dynamic voltage scaling, and battery-driven operation. Two simulation case studies are presented: a simple communication scenario and a mobile robot soccer game
Gradients of anthropogenic stress in Indonesian coral reefs Implications for bacterial community composition and aggregate formation
The Indonesian Spermonde Archipelago, like other coral reefs located in close vicinity to urban areas, is confronted with a multitude of local anthropogenic stressors. A combination of experimental and observational studies was conducted at several fringing reefs and in the water column of the Archipelago during two sampling campaigns. Water quality parameters were not gradually decreasing with increasing distance from Makassar. Instead, there were two contrasting regions, one eutrophic inshore zone and the remaining, oligotrophic shelf. Bacterial community compositions were very distinct between those two described zones. Additionally, significantly higher total aggregated volume and sedimentation rates were observed in the eutrophic zone compared sampling within the oligotrophic outer shelf zone. Data presented in this thesis conclusively showed that dense human populations on the mainland and on the individual islands exerted a clear and measurable influence on the investigated water quality parameters, but that influence was restricted to a narrow zone close to the coast
Holistic Simulation of Mobile Robot and Sensor Network Applications Using TrueTime
The RUNES project defines a complex road tunnel scenario involving multiple mobile robots navigating in sensor network environment. In this paper, a TrueTime simulation model of the tunnel scenario is developed. The TrueTime simulator allows concurrent simulation of the physical robots and their environment, the software in the nodes, the radio communication, the network routing, and the ultra-sound navigation system. The various models are described in detail, and some simulation results obtained from the complete model are presented
Synthesis of cis-Oriented Vicinal Diphenylethylenes through a Lewis Acid-Promoted Annulation of Oxotriphenylhexanoates
This study explores the synthesis of cyclic cis-vicinal phenyl ethylenes from oxotriphenylhexanoates. The reaction is a BBr3-promoted cyclization of 1,6-ketoesters (1) to five-membered diketo compounds (2). The synthesis is interesting as it constitutes one of the few examples of modular stereoselective synthesis of structures with a cis-oriented vicinal diphenylethylene. The core structure of 2 can be smoothly derivatized, which makes it a promising synthetic building block for further stereoselective synthetic applications
Tools for Real-Time Control Systems Co-Design : A Survey
This report presents a survey of current simulation tools in the area of integrated control and real-time systems design. Each tool is presented with a quick overview followed by a more detailed section describing comparative aspects of the tool. These aspects describe the context and purpose of the tool (scenarios, development stages, activities, and qualities/constraints being addressed) and the actual tool technology (tool architecture, inputs, outputs, modeling content, extensibility and availability). The tools presented in the survey are the following; Jitterbug and TrueTime from the Department of Automatic Control at Lund University, Sweden, AIDA and XILO from the Department of Machine Design at the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, Ptolemy II from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at Berkeley, California, RTSIM from the RETIS Laboratory, Pisa, Italy, and Syndex and Orccad from INRIA, France. The survey also briefly describes some existing commercial tools related to the area of real-time control systems
High risk of in-breast tumor recurrence after BRCA1/2-associated breast cancer.

Women with invasive breast cancer and a pathogenic mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 were included in the study (n = 162). Patients treated with BCT (n = 45) were compared with patients treated with M (n = 118). Endpoints were local recurrence as first recurrence (LR), overall survival (OS), breast cancer death, and distant recurrence. Cumulative incidence was calculated in the presence of competing risks. For calculation of hazard ratios and for multivariable analysis, cause-specific Cox proportional hazards regression was used. Compared to M, BCT was associated with an increased risk of LR in univariable analysis (HR 4.0; 95 % CI 1.6-9.8) and in multivariable analysis adjusting for tumor stage, age, and use of adjuvant chemotherapy (HR 2.9; CI 1.1-7.8). Following M, all local recurrences were seen in the first 5 years after breast cancer diagnosis. Following BCT, the rate of LR continued to be high also after the first 5 years. The cumulative incidence of LR in the BCT group was 15, 25, and 32 % after 5, 10, and 15 years, respectively. There were no significant differences between BCT and M for OS, breast cancer death, or distant recurrence. BRCA1/2 mutation carriers treated with BCT have a high risk of LR, many of which are new primary breast cancers. This must be thoroughly discussed with the patient and is an example of how rapid treatment-focused genetic testing could influence choice of treatment.Regional Ethical Review Board in Lund
