Socioeconomic determinants of multimorbidity: a population-based household survey of Hong Kong Chinese
<b>Introduction</b> Multimorbidity has been well researched in terms of consequences and healthcare implications. Nevertheless, its risk factors and determinants, especially in the Asian context, remain understudied. We tested the hypothesis of a negative relationship between socioeconomic status and multimorbidity, with contextually different patterns from those observed in the West.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b> We conducted our study in the general Hong Kong (HK) population. Data on current health conditions, health behaviours, socio-demographic and socioeconomic characteristics was obtained from HK Government’s Thematic Household Survey. 25,780 individuals aged 15 or above were sampled. Binary logistic and negative binomial regression analyses were conducted to identify risk factors for presence of multimorbidity and number of chronic conditions, respectively. Sub-analysis of possible mediation effect through financial burden borne by private housing residents on multimorbidity was also conducted.<p></p>
<b>Results</b> Unadjusted and adjusted models showed that being female, being 25 years or above, having an education level of primary schooling or below, having less than HK$15,000 monthly household income, being jobless or retired, and being past daily smoker were significant risk factors for the presence of multimorbidity and increased number of chronic diseases. Living in private housing was significantly associated with higher chance of multimorbidity and increased number of chronic diseases only after adjustments.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b>Less advantaged people tend to have higher risks of multimorbidity and utilize healthcare from the public sector with poorer primary healthcare experience. Moreover, middle-class people who are not eligible for government subsidized public housing may be of higher risk of multimorbidity due to psychosocial stress from paying for the severely unaffordable private housing

For the purposes of this study, the non-highway modes are aviation, public transportation, rail, and waterways. This summary will briefly discuss the rationale, objectives, and methodology for this study. It also provides an overview of the outcomes of the study and the modal matrices

Photoactivatable genetically encoded calcium indicators for targeted neuronal imaging.
Circuit mapping requires knowledge of both structural and functional connectivity between cells. Although optical tools have been made to assess either the morphology and projections of neurons or their activity and functional connections, few probes integrate this information. We have generated a family of photoactivatable genetically encoded Ca(2+) indicators that combines attributes of high-contrast photolabeling with high-sensitivity Ca(2+) detection in a single-color protein sensor. We demonstrated in cultured neurons and in fruit fly and zebrafish larvae how single cells could be selected out of dense populations for visualization of morphology and high signal-to-noise measurements of activity, synaptic transmission and connectivity. Our design strategy is transferrable to other sensors based on circularly permutated GFP (cpGFP)
Broken symmetry states and divergent resistance in suspended bilayer graphene
Graphene [1] and its bilayer have generated tremendous excitement in the
physics community due to their unique electronic properties [2]. The intrinsic
physics of these materials, however, is partially masked by disorder, which can
arise from various sources such as ripples [3] or charged impurities [4].
Recent improvements in quality have been achieved by suspending graphene flakes
[5,6], yielding samples with very high mobilities and little charge
inhomogeneity. Here we report the fabrication of suspended bilayer graphene
devices with very little disorder. We observe fully developed quantized Hall
states at magnetic fields of 0.2 T, as well as broken symmetry states at
intermediate filling factors , , and . The
devices exhibit extremely high resistance in the state that grows
with magnetic field and scales as magnetic field divided by temperature. This
resistance is predominantly affected by the perpendicular component of the
applied field, indicating that the broken symmetry states arise from many-body

Quality of Life Assessment in Spina Bifida for Children (QUALAS-C): Development and Validation of a Novel Health-related Quality of Life Instrument
Objective
To develop and validate a self-reported health-related QUAlity of Life Assessment in Spina bifida for Children (QUALAS-C).
Methods
We drafted a 27-question pilot instrument using a patient-centered comprehensive item generation and refinement process. It was administered to a sample of children 8-12 years old with spina bifida (SB) recruited online via social media and in person at an outpatient SB clinic (January 2013-September 2014). Healthy controls were recruited at routine pediatrician visits. Validation and final questions were determined based on clinical relevance, high loadings on factor analysis, and domain psychometrics. Children with SB also completed the validated generic Kidscreen-27 instrument.
Results
Median age of 150 participants was 9.6 years (60.7% male, 72.7% Caucasian), similar to 46 controls (P ≥ .10). There were 97 online and 53 clinic participants (89.0% and 84.2% of eligible, respectively). Face and content validities of the 2-domain, 10-question QUALAS-C were established by patients, parents, and experts. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability was high for the Esteem & Independence and Bladder & Bowel domains (Cronbach's alpha: 0.72-0.76, ICC: 0.74-0.77). Correlations between QUALAS-C domains were low (r = 0.51), indicating that QUALAS-C can differentiate between two distinct health-related quality of life components. Correlations between QUALAS-C and Kidscreen-27 were also low (r ≤ 0.44). QUALAS-C scores were significantly lower in children with SB than without (P < .0001).
Conclusion
QUALAS-C is a short, valid health-related quality of life tool for children with SB. It will be useful in clinical and research settings
The Star Formation and Extinction Co-Evolution of UV-Selected Galaxies over 0.05<z<1.2
We use a new stacking technique to obtain mean mid IR and far IR to far UV
flux ratios over the rest near-UV/near-IR color-magnitude diagram. We employ
COMBO-17 redshifts and COMBO-17 optical, GALEX far and near UV, Spitzer IRAC
and MIPS Mid IR photometry. This technique permits us to probe infrared excess
(IRX), the ratio of far IR to far UV luminosity, and specific star formation
rate (SSFR) and their co-evolution over two orders of magnitude of stellar mass
and redshift 0.1<z<1.2. We find that the SSFR and the characteristic mass (M_0)
above which the SSFR drops increase with redshift (downsizing). At any given
epoch, IRX is an increasing function of mass up to M_0. Above this mass IRX
falls, suggesting gas exhaustion. In a given mass bin below M_0 IRX increases
with time in a fashion consistent with enrichment. We interpret these trends
using a simple model with a Schmidt-Kennicutt law and extinction that tracks
gas density and enrichment. We find that the average IRX and SSFR follows a
galaxy age parameter which is determined mainly by the galaxy mass and time
since formation. We conclude that blue sequence galaxies have properties which
show simple, systematic trends with mass and time such as the steady build-up
of heavy elements in the interstellar media of evolving galaxies and the
exhaustion of gas in galaxies that are evolving off the blue sequence. The IRX

Coral Communities, in Contrast to Fish Communities, Maintain a High Assembly Similarity along the Large Latitudinal Gradient along the Saudi Red Sea Coast
The Saudi Arabian Red Sea coast is characterized by a strong environmental gradient from north (28.5°N) to south (16.5°N) with challenging conditions for coral growth particularly in the south (high temperature and nutrient input). We investigated whether assemblies of reef-building corals and the distribution of functional groups follow a latitudinal pattern in the Red Sea, and whether these changes affect the assembly structure of coral associated organisms (e.g. fishes). Functional groups were defined based on life-history traits and functional role. 13 reefs along the north-south gradient, including 5 potentially polluted reefs were investigated. Results showed a substantially weaker latitudinal shift in the assembly structure of coral communities than of fishes communities and of other benthic reef taxa. Competitive fast growing branching and tabular species (mainly Acropora), as well as rather stresstolerant slow growing bulky species (e.g. Porites, Goniastrea, Favites, Favia) were fairly evenly distributed along the north-south axis despite strong changes of environmental conditions. This seems on the one hand attributable to the high species richness within a given functional group (functional redundancy) and on the other hand to a high acclimatization / adaptation potential of some Red Sea coral species. The prime ecosystem service of the coral community, the provision of a habitat complex, is thereby maintained throughout the gradient. In contrast to the coral community, the assembly of the fish community shifts along the environmental gradient with higher abundances of small wrasses and butterfly fishes in the north, and overall higher abundance of fishes including large fishes in the south. Validation of QUALAS-T, a health-related quality of life instrument for teenagers with spina bifida
Introduction
We aimed to develop and validate a self-reported QUAlity of Life Assessment in Spina bifida for Teenagers (QUALAS-T).
Material and methods
We drafted a 46-question pilot instrument using a patient-centered comprehensive item generation/refinement process. A group of 13–17 years olds with spina bifida (SB) was recruited online via social media and in person at SB clinics (2013–2015). Healthy controls were recruited during routine pediatrician visits. Final questions were identified based on clinical relevance, factor analysis and domain psychometrics. Teenagers with SB completed the validated generic Kidscreen-27 instrument.
Results
Median age of 159 participants was 15.2 years (42.0% male, 77.4% Caucasian), similar to 58 controls (p ≥ 0.06). There were 102 online and 57 clinic participants (82.8% of eligible). Patients, parents and an expert panel established face and content validity of the 2-domain, 10-question QUALAS-T. Internal consistency and test-retest reliability were high for the Family and Independence and Bladder and Bowel domains (Cronbach's alpha: 0.76–0.78, ICC: 0.72–0.75). The Bladder and Bowel domain is the same for QUALAS-T , QUALAS-A for adults and QUALAS-C for children. Correlations between QUALAS-T domains were low (r = 0.34), indicating QUALAS-T can differentiate between distinct HRQOL components. Correlations between QUALAS-T and Kidscreen-27 were also low (r ≤0.41). QUALAS-T scores were lower in teenagers with SB than without (p <0.0001).
Conclusions
QUALAS-T is a short, valid HRQOL tool for adolescents with SB, applicable in clinical and research settings. Since the Bladder & Bowel domains for all QUALAS versions are the same, Bladder and Bowel HRQOL can be measured on the same scale from age 8 through adulthood
Estimating Effect of Antiviral Drug Use during Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 Outbreak, United States
From April 2009 through March 2010, during the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 outbreak, ≈8.2 million prescriptions for influenza neuraminidase-inhibiting antiviral drugs were filled in the United States. We estimated the number of hospitalizations likely averted due to use of these antiviral medications. After adjusting for prescriptions that were used for prophylaxis and personal stockpiles, as well as for patients who did not complete their drug regimen, we estimated the filled prescriptions prevented ≈8,400–12,600 hospitalizations (on the basis of median values). Approximately 60% of these prevented hospitalizations were among adults 18–64 years of age, with the remainder almost equally divided between children 0–17 years of age and adults >65 years of age. Public health officials should consider these estimates an indication of success of treating patients during the 2009 pandemic and a warning of the need for renewed planning to cope with the next pandemic
Ultraviolet through Infrared Spectral Energy Distributions from 1000 SDSS Galaxies: Dust Attenuation
The meaningful comparison of models of galaxy evolution to observations is
critically dependent on the accurate treatment of dust attenuation. To
investigate dust absorption and emission in galaxies we have assembled a sample
of ~1000 galaxies with ultraviolet (UV) through infrared (IR) photometry from
GALEX, SDSS, and Spitzer and optical spectroscopy from SDSS. The ratio of IR to
UV emission (IRX) is used to constrain the dust attenuation in galaxies. We use
the 4000A break as a robust and useful, although coarse, indicator of star
formation history (SFH). We examine the relationship between IRX and the UV
spectral slope (a common attenuation indicator at high-redshift) and find
little dependence of the scatter on 4000A break strength. We construct average
UV through far-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for different ranges of
IRX, 4000A break strength, and stellar mass (M_*) to show the variation of the
entire SED with these parameters. When binned simultaneously by IRX, 4000A
break strength, and M_* these SEDs allow us to determine a low resolution
average attenuation curve for different ranges of M_*. The attenuation curves
thus derived are consistent with a lambda^{-0.7} attenuation law, and we find
no significant variations with M_*. Finally, we show the relationship between
IRX and the global stellar mass surface density and gas-phase-metallicity.
Among star forming galaxies we find a strong correlation between IRX and
stellar mass surface density, even at constant metallicity, a result that is
closely linked to the well-known correlation between IRX and star-formation
