IS THERE A CONTINENTAL BIAS IN TRADE?
The relationship between geography and trade is a central topic in international economics. This paper investigates the potential existence of a continental bias in world trade flows on a sample of 182 countries over the period 1990-2006. Using traditional estimation techniques and recent developments in the econometric analysis of the gravity equation, we find robust evidence of an economically significant continental bias in trade. It implies that, other things equal, countries located on the same continent trade more with each other than countries located on different continents. A continent-by-continent analysis reveals that Oceania, America, Europe and Asia are behind this result. Africa is the only region for which the results are not conclusive
e-WASTE: Everything an ICT Scientist and Developer Should Know
[EN] Every dazzling announcement of a new smart phone or trendy digital device is the prelude to
more tons of electronic waste (e-waste) being produced. This e-waste, or electronic scrap, is often improperly
added to common garbage, rather than being separated into suitable containers that facilitate the recovery
of toxic materials and valuable metals. We are beginning to become aware of the problems that e-waste can
generate to our health and the environment. However, most of us are still not motivated enough to take an
active part in reversing the situation. The aim of this article is to contribute to increase this motivation by
pointing out the significant problem that e-waste represents and its social and environmental implications. We
have chosen this forum in which multidisciplinary researchers in ICT from all countries access on regularly
to explain the serious problems we are exposed to when we do not make a responsible and correct use
of technology. In this paper, we also survey the composition of contemporary electronic devices and the
possibilities and difficulties of recycling the elements they contain. As researchers, our contributions in
science enable us to find solutions to current problems and to design more and more powerful intelligent
devices. But responsible researchers must be aware of the negative effects that this industry causes us
and, consequently, assume their commitment with more sustainable designs and developments. Therefore,
the knowledge of e-waste issues is crucial also in the scientific world. Researchers should consider this
problem and contribute to minimize it or find new solutions to manage it. These must be the additional
challenges in our projects. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under Grant TIN2013-43913-R.Pont Sanjuan, A.; Robles Martínez, A.; Gil, JA. Road accidents in Spain: Are they persistent?
Traffic accidents involve great costs both at an economic and a human level. This demands that governments implement strategies to reduce their number and impact. The knowledge of the nature of the phenomenon through the study of time series of accidents enables the design of suitable policies for the desired objectives to be achieved. Thus, this paper deals with the analysis of the statistical properties of the number of road accidents on Spanish roads by using time series techniques based on the concept of fractional integration. The results indicate that the series examined display very low degrees of persistence, with the orders of integration being around 0 and thus showing a short memory pattern. This implies that shocks will be transitory, disappearing fast, and requiring strong policy measures in the case of positive shocks that reduce the number of deaths if we want to maintain that effect in the long run.pre-print1174 K

no presenta complicaciones. Exponen su experiencia en el caso y revisión de la bibliografía.Traumatic hip dislocation of the hip is rare in children. The authors
report a case of anterior hip dislocation in a 4-year-old boy who received relatively
minor trauma. He was unable to walk and was in severe pain when seen in emergency
room. He was followed-up for 18 months and no complications have appeared.
They report here their experience with one case and review the literature
Generalized granuloma annulare after pneumococcal vaccination
Granuloma annulare may be caused by multiple triggers. Among these are vaccinations, which have been described as an infrequent cause of granuloma annulare. The authors report the first case of generalized granuloma annulare associated with pneumococcal vaccination in a 57-year-old woman, who presented cutaneous lesions 12 days after vaccination
Plant virus cell-to-cell movement is not dependent on the transmembrane disposition of its movement protein
The cell-to-cell transport of plant viruses depends on one or more virus-encoded movement proteins (MPs). Some MPs are integral membrane proteins that interact with the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum, but a detailed understanding of the interaction between MPs and biological membranes has been lacking. The cell-to-cell movement of the Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) is facilitated by a single MP of the 30K superfamily. Here, using a myriad of biochemical and biophysical approaches, we show that the PNRSV MP contains only one hydrophobic region (HR) that interacts with the membrane interface, as opposed to being a transmembrane protein. We also show that a proline residue located in the middle of the HR constrains the structural conformation of this region at the membrane interface, and its replacement precludes virus movement
