Light-triggered carotenogenesis in myxococcus xanthus: New paradigms in photosensory signaling, transduction and gene regulation

22 pags., 6 figs. -- This article belongs to the Special Issue Myxobacteria: Physiology and RegulationMyxobacteria are Gram-negative δ-proteobacteria found predominantly in terrestrial habitats and often brightly colored due to the biosynthesis of carotenoids. Carotenoids are lipophilic isoprenoid pigments that protect cells from damage and death by quenching highly reactive and toxic oxidative species, like singlet oxygen, generated upon growth under light. The model myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus turns from yellow in the dark to red upon exposure to light because of the photoinduction of carotenoid biosynthesis. How light is sensed and transduced to bring about regulated carotenogenesis in order to combat photooxidative stress has been extensively investigated in M. xanthus using genetic, biochemical and high-resolution structural methods. These studies have unearthed new paradigms in bacterial light sensing, signal transduction and gene regulation, and have led to the discovery of prototypical members of widely distributed protein families with novel functions. Major advances have been made over the last decade in elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the light-dependent signaling and regulation of the transcriptional response leading to carotenogenesis in M. xanthus. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of these findings and their significance. This research was funded by grants PGC2018-094635-B-C21 (to M.E.-A.) and PGC2018- 094635-B-C22 (to S.P) from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI)-Spain and European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), and by grant 20992/PI/18 (to M.E.-A.) from Fundación Séneca (Murcia)- Spain. It has been demonstrated that subtitled multimedia content is a tool that facilitates foreign language learning. Traditionally, subtitling is presented in the lower portion of the screen, but recent research has shown the benefits of integrating subtitles within the visual image (as opposed to the bottom edge) since, by reducing the amount of eye movement, cognitive load and stress are in turn reduced, allowing for a better comprehension of the information. This research studies the potential impact of integrated (sub)titles mediated by the Gestalt laws of perception and a deictic visual effect on the oral comprehension of French as a foreign language. This study of confirmatory nature comprised two groups of French language students, to whom an oral comprehension test was applied with the purpose of comparing two stimuli: one video in French with integrated (sub)titles (stimulus 1) and the same video with integrated deictic (sub)titles (stimulus 2). The results indicate that integrated deictic (sub)titles improve oral comprehension in French language students, as they enable a better association of visual and auditory information.

Protection Strategies for the Connection of Diode Rectifier-Based Wind Power Plants to HVdc Interconnectors

The connection of diode rectifier (DR)-based wind power plants (WPPs) to existing or planned high-voltage dc (HVdc) interconnectors can lead to important savings on cost and system robustness. Since the DR station usually operates in a bipolar configuration, its connection to symmetric monopoles is particularly challenging. However, there are no published detailed studies on the protection of DR connection WPPs to symmetric monopole interconnectors or even to bipolar interconnectors. This article includes the comparative study of five different protection strategies for such systems, including both solid and resistive DR station grounding and strategies with and without the use of dc-circuit breakers (dcCBs). An analytical study allows for the calculation of fault current during fault onset for both half-bridge and hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC) stations. Using detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation studies, the different protection strategies are evaluated in terms of current, voltage, and isolation requirements of each element, as well as the need for dcCBs, fast communication, or larger surge arresters. Moreover, a distance fault detection algorithm is included for the wind turbine converters to distinguish between local ac-grid and dc-cable faults. From the simulation results, it is possible to conclude that DR high-impedance grounding, together with wind turbine distance protection, can be used for the protection of DR-based offshore WPPs connected to symmetric monopole interconnectors without requiring dcCBs

Background and Objectives: The treatment of hypertension and its complications are a worldwide problem. In our country nearly 25 % of the population over 15 years old is hypertensive, and this figure nearly doubles in those over 60. This research aims to compare two treatment strategies for controlling hypertension in outpatients with chronic coronary ischemic syndrome. Method: A total of 150 patients was included, 73 were randomized to receive calcium antagonist and non-calcium antagonist respectively, as 4 patients were subsequently excluded. Each was asked to sign consent, underwent clinical examination and a 12-lead, conventional electrocardiogram. Blood pressure and episodes of angina were evaluated at 6 months and one year. All variables were entered into a database and statistical analysis was performed using Student's t and Chi square. Results: The mean age was 61,5 years. Women and white skin color were predominant. At 12 months of treatment, blood pressure normalized in more than 80 % of patients without significant differences between the two treatment strategies. Over 75 % of patients in both groups controlled the angina episodes and more than 85 % said the quality of life was good. Conclusions: Control of blood pressure and angina was achieved and there were no significant differences between the two treatment strategies

The photosynthetic cytochrome c550 from the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum

The photosynthetic cytochrome c550 from the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum has been purified and characterized. Cytochrome c550 is mostly obtained from the soluble cell extract in relatively large amounts. In addition, the protein appeared to be truncated in the last hydrophobic residues of the C-terminus, both in the soluble cytochrome c550 and in the protein extracted from the membrane fraction, as deduced by mass spectrometry analysis and the comparison with the gene sequence. Interestingly, it has been described that the C-terminus of cytochrome c550 forms a hydrophobic finger involved in the interaction with photosystem II in cyanobacteria. Cytochrome c550 was almost absent in solubilized photosystem II complex samples, in contrast with the PsbO and Psb31 extrinsic subunits, thus suggesting a lower affinity of cytochrome c550 for the photosystem II complex. Under iron-limiting conditions the amount of cytochrome c550 decreases up to about 45% as compared to iron-replete cells, pointing to an iron-regulated synthesis. Oxidized cytochrome c550 has been characterized using continuous wave EPR and pulse techniques, including HYSCORE, and the obtained results have been interpreted in terms of the electrostatic charge distribution in the surroundings of the heme centre

Red wines and their grape pomaces are important sources of phenolic compounds. Inhibition of plateletaggregation is one of the mechanisms proposed for cardioprotective effect of phenolic compounds fromwine and grape pomace; however, phenolic content is affected by region, variety and winemaking process. In the present study, antiplatelet effect of red wines and grape pomaces was related to its phenolic content(determined by spectrophotometric techniques) and profile (determined using HPLC-MS/MS). in vitroAnti-platelet aggregation was determined using human platelets. Results showed that Zinfandel wine andCabernet Sauvignon grape pomace presented the highest phenolic content. Phenolic profiles presenteddifferences in the presence of flavonoids and oligomeric tannins. Results from platelet aggregationshowed that Merlot and Petit Verdot wines and Petit Verdot grape pomace sample presented the highestantiaggregant effect. These results indicate that antiplatelet effect could be related to phenolic profile thanphenolic content in wines and grape pomaces. Cardioprotective effect of red wines and grape pomacecould be related to specific compounds such as monomeric and polymeric flavan-3-ols

Symbolic powers of monomial ideals and Cohen-Macaulay vertex-weighted digraphs

In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality between its ordinary and symbolic powers. We give an effective characterization of the Cohen--Macaulay vertex-weighted oriented forests. For edge ideals of transitive weighted oriented graphs we show that Alexander duality holds. It is shown that edge ideals of weighted acyclic tournaments are Cohen--Macaulay and satisfy Alexander dualityComment: Special volume dedicated to Professor Antonio Campillo, Springer, to appea
