The final publication is available at Spriger via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10518-013-9500-1On May 11, 2011 an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 (Mw) struck Murcia region causing nine casualties and damage to buildings and infrastructures. Even if the main characteristics of the event would classify it as a moderate earthquake, the maximum Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) registered (equal to 0.37 g) exceeded significantly local code provisions in terms of hazard at the site. This high PGA was a result of directivity effects in the near source region. An overview of earthquake characteristics and damage observed is provided. Notwithstanding the lack of proper structural design characterizing building stock in the area, most of the losses were caused by non-structural damage. According to in field observations, it emerges that masonry infills provided additional, not designed , strength to reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Observed damage data, collected after the earthquake, are shown and compared to the results of a simplified approach for nonstructural damage assessment of RC infilled structures (FAST vulnerability approach). The latter comparison provided a fair accordance between observed data and analytical results. The work presented has been developed in cooperation with Rete dei Laboratori Universitari di Ingegneria Sismica-ReLUIS-Linea 1.1.2. for the research program funded by the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (2010-2013).De Luca, F.; Verderame, GM.; Gómez Martínez, F.; Pérez García, AJ. Gender under the mat. Conversations about body/bodies in Physical Education

The following article refers to an analysis of a virtual workshop experience, to which we were invited to talk about Physical Education and gender. It seems that in some areas of Physical Education, talking about gender and sexualities is a theme in which it elicits silence and concealment. The intention of thinking about the hidden nature of gender in Physical Education led us to ask ourselves about the way of looking at bodies that appears in this disciplinary field. From the dialogues with the participants in the talk: “The gender under the mat. Conversations about body (s) in Physical Education”, elements emerge that account for these modes and give us the opportunity to revisit the areas in which the knowledge of the discipline is crystallized and the routes, theoretical traits and lines that were building the way of looking at the body in body pedagogy, to think the limits of a possible sexual education in key of the Physical Education.

Clinical validation of eye vergence as an objective marker for diagnosis of ADHD in children

    Get PDF
Objective: ADHD youth show poor oculomotor control. Recent research shows that attention-related eye vergence is weak in ADHD children. Method: To validate vergence as a marker to classify ADHD, we assessed the modulation in the angle of vergence of children (n = 43) previously diagnosed with ADHD while performing an attention task and compared the results with age-matched clinical controls (n = 19) and healthy peers (n = 30). Results: We observed strong vergence responses in healthy participants and weak vergence in the clinical controls. ADHD children showed no significant vergence responses. Machine-learning models classified ADHD patients (n = 21) from healthy controls (n = 21) with an accuracy of 96.3% (false positive [FP]: 5.12%; false negative [FN]: 0%; area under the curve [AUC]: 0.99) and ADHD children (n = 11) from clinical controls (n = 14) with an accuracy of 85.7% (FP: 4.5%; FN: 19.2%, AUC: 0.90). Conclusion: In combination with an attention task, vergence responses can be used as an objective marker to detect ADHD in children.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Thermodynamics’ zeroth law in a nonextensive scenario

    Get PDF
We show how to reconcile Tsallis’ thermostatistics with thermodynamics’ zeroth law, by recourse to the so-called optimal Lagrange multipliers formalism. The central concept is that of not identifying in the usual fashion the inverse temperature with the Lagrange multiplier associated to the internal energy. Our analysis provides one with compatibility conditions between the additivity of the internal energy and the pseudo-additivity of the generalized entropy. With regards to the first law of thermodynamics, a generalization of Clausius’ equation is advanced.Facultad de Ciencias ExactasInstituto de Física La Plat
