    Signposts for Comprehensive Knowledge of CLIL Contexts

    AbstractThe implementation of a bilingual program at higher education raises multiple questions to those involved. The uncertainty around such novel experience could be lessened if participants understood all the factors converging. This paper provides a list of elements and parameters to aid both present and prospective practitioners to deepen in the characteristics and factors of their contexts. This systematic approach to the knowledge of the context assembles several theoretical models and descriptors of the practice of teaching content through English at higher education. Special attention will be given to linguistic issues. The five- year experience of bilingual teaching at the Escuela de Ingeniería de Informática de Segovia (Universidad de Valladolid) is used to illustrate the models and descriptors

    Caveolin-1 Modulates Mechanotransduction Responses to Substrate Stiffness through Actin-Dependent Control of YAP

    The transcriptional regulator YAP orchestrates many cellular functions, including tissue homeostasis, organ growth control, and tumorigenesis. Mechanical stimuli are a key input to YAP activity, but the mechanisms controlling this regulation remain largely uncharacterized. We show that CAV1 positively modulates the YAP mechanoresponse to substrate stiffness through actin-cytoskeleton-dependent and Hippo-kinase-independent mechanisms. RHO activity is necessary, but not sufficient, for CAV1-dependent mechanoregulation of YAP activity. Systematic quantitative interactomic studies and image-based small interfering RNA (siRNA) screens provide evidence that this actin-dependent regulation is determined by YAP interaction with the 14-3-3 protein YWHAH. Constitutive YAP activation rescued phenotypes associated with CAV1 loss, including defective extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. CAV1-mediated control of YAP activity was validated in vivo in a model of pancreatitis-driven acinar-to-ductal metaplasia. We propose that this CAV1-YAP mechanotransduction system controls a significant share of cell programs linked to these two pivotal regulators, with potentially broad physiological and pathological implications. Moreno-Vicente et al. report that CAV1, a key component of PM mechanosensing caveolae, mediates adaptation to ECM rigidity by modulating YAP activity through the control of actin dynamics and phosphorylation-dependent interaction of YAP with the 14-3-3-domain protein YWHAH.     Un estudio comparativo sobre el pensamiento profesional y la "acción docente" de los profesores de ciencias de Educación Secundaria. Parte II

    Este artículo es la segunda parte de una investigación más amplia sobre el pensamiento del profesor (Martínez et al., 2001). En este caso el estudio gira en torno al análisis de las diferencias y similitudes entre dos muestras de profesores de ciencias de educación secundaria que difieren en sus años de docencia y en su trayectoria profesional, definida por la realización de cursos de formación permanente de alta cualificación científica y didáctica. En un primer apartado se analizan facetas relacionadas con la motivación y la satisfacción en la realización de su tarea, la manera de entender la formación del profesor y sus percepciones sobre diferentes factores profesionales. A continuación se aborda lo que «dicen hacer» en relación a aspectos curriculares referidos a contenidos, metodología y evaluación. A partir del análisis de las respuestas a los cuestionarios elaborados se plantean una serie de reflexiones que buscarían mejorar el «desarrollo profesional» de este colectivo de profesores.This article is a part of a wider research on secondary science teachers' beliefs.     Differential toxicity of antifungal protein AFP against mutants of Fusarium oxysporum

    Antifungal protein (AFP) from Aspergillus giganteus was assayed for toxicity against the Fusarium oxysporum wild-type strain and mutants in genes involved in cell signaling (ΔpacC, pacCc Δfmk1) or cell-wall biogenesis (ΔchsV, Δchs7, Δgas1). The mutants were classified into two groups according to their sensitivity to AFP: ΔpacC, Δgas1 and Δchs7, which were significantly more resistant to AFP than the wild-type, and pacCC, Δfmk1 and ΔchsV, which were more sensitive. Western blot analysis revealed increased binding of AFP to the three resistant mutants, ΔpacC, Δgas1 and Δchs7, but also to ΔchsV, indicating that differential binding may not be a key determinant for sensitivity. Addition of Ca2+ or K+ dramatically reduced antifungal activity and binding of AFP, suggesting that these cations compete for the same targets as AFP at the surface of the fungal cell.     Frailty is associated with objectively assessed sedentary behaviour patterns in older adults: Evidence from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging (TSHA)

    Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the association of sedentary behaviour patterns with frailty in older people. Setting: Clinical setting. Design: Cross-sectional, observational study. Participants and measurements: A triaxial accelerometer was used in a subsample from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging (519 participants, 67–97 years) to assess several sedentary behaviour patterns including sedentary time per day, the number and duration (min) of breaks in sedentary time per day, and the proportion of the day spent in sedentary bouts of 10 minutes or more. Frailty was assessed using the Frailty Trait Scale (FTS). Regression analysis was used to ascertain the associations between sedentary behaviour patterns and frailty. Results: Sedentary time per day and the proportion of the day spent in sedentary bouts of 10 minutes or more, were positively associated with frailty in the study sample. Conversely, the time spent in breaks in sedentary time was negatively associated with frailty. Conclusion: In summary, breaking up sedentary time and time spent in sedentary behaviour are associated with frailty in older people
