Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050. A gente faz o que o coração dita: análise semiótica das capas dos discos de Dorival Caymmi

O objetivo central deste estudo é verificar possíveis relações de paridade entre as capas e o conteúdo musical dos discos de Dorival Caymmi. Também foi estudada a autoria dessas capas, verificando a quem havia cabido a responsabilidade de transformar em imagem e design a música daqueles discos. Para tanto, foram desenvolvidas análises semióticas com base na teoria peirceana das capas dos dez primeiros discos de Caymmi, levando sempre em conta seus contextos de lançamento, suas referências de autoria e a música dos discos que as capas continham. Houve também a necessidade de se fazer entrevistas, para que restassem claras algumas dúvidas surgidas ao longo das próprias análises. O que se conseguiu descobrir, ao fim do estudo, foi a forte união entre as capas (visual) e os discos (musical), mesmo havendo muita variedade na autoria daquelas. Verificou-se também, ao longo do estudo, algo que surpreendeu a todos: a presença efetiva de Dorival Caymmi na elaboração de algumas dessas capas.The aim of this study is to verify the possible equality relations among the covers and the musical content of Dorival Caymmis records. It also studied the authorship of these covers checking to whom the authorship responsibility of changing into image and design the songs of those records was to. For that, semiotics analysis of the first ten records of Caymmi were developed based on peircean theory - , taken into account their market launching context, their authorship references, and the songs the covers had inside. There was also a necessity to make interviews to clarify some doubts that came up during the analysis. What could be found in the end of the study was the strong connection between the covers (visual) and the records (musical), despite the authorship variety. It was also verified during the study something that surprised everyone: the effective presence of Dorival Caymmi in the elaboration of some of these covers

Talento, significado e sensibilidade: epistemologia e currículo da semiopublicidade

Os tempos contemporâneos são tempos de incertezas, de desafios e de transformações. Ambiguidade, hibridismo, mobilidade, imediatismo, muitos são os traços desse tempo que, de tão acelerados, alteram o panorama social em que se vive, deixando alunos, professores, pesquisadores e profissionais atônitos e desorientados. Esta tese de doutorado, sustentada conceitualmente nas teorias do consumo e na semiótica peirceana, procura flagrar o ensino da publicidade nesse conturbado contexto. Valendo-se metodicamente da revisão bibliográfica, das entrevistas em profundidade e da análise de conteúdo das matrizes curriculares e das ementas de dez instituições de ensino superior, esta pesquisa primeiro retrata as carências teórico-paradigmáticas do ensino da publicidade, para, depois, apresentar propostas concretas em favor de uma epistemologia própria da propaganda, refletida em um novo modelo de arranjo disciplinar.Contemporary times are times of uncertainty, challenges and transformations. This doctoral thesis, conceptually sustained on theories of consumption and Peircean semiotics, aims to descrive the teaching of advertising in this troubled context. Counting methodically on the literature review, interviews in-depth and content analysis of the curriculum and the disciplines of ten higher education institutions, this research first portrays the theoretical and paradigmatic problems related to the teaching of advertising, to then submit objectives proposals in favor of an own epistemology for advertising, reflected in a new model of disciplinary arrangement

Cão de serviço como fator terapêutico de sintomas depressivos e protetivo contra ideação suicida em paciente com provável diagnóstico de transtorno afetivo bipolar

Introdução: Intervenção assistida com animais (IAA) consiste em qualquer intervenção que intencionalmente inclui animais no projeto terapêutico para melhorar o meio em que vive o paciente ou o quadro patológico em si. Há estudos que demonstram eficácia em diversas patologias desde autismo e transtorno de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade na infância, depressão, estresse pós-traumático, cuidados paliativos, demência, etc. Porém não há relatos dessa aplicação para pacientes diagnosticados com Transtorno Bipolar Afetivo (TAB). Relato de Caso: Paciente de 45 anos, sexo masculino, em processo de divórcio de LS, afrodescendente, natural de Rondônia, procedente de Votorantim, procura o atendimento do CAPS com queixa de tristeza e falta de motivos para viver relatando piora do quadro há 5 anos. Vem acompanhado da cachorra. Paciente demonstra atitude ativa no decorrer da consulta com discurso voluntário, postura corporal introspectiva e olhar depressivo. Tem autos cuidados comprometidos. Demonstra extremo vínculo e dependência emocional com o animal. Discussão: Quando se fala em suicídio, se fala de uma causa morte evitável onde se discute fatores de risco e fatores protetivos, sendo o primeiro mais estudado. Um estudo realizado em Taiwan com 1542 pacientes com depressão bipolar e 17480 pacientes com outros tipos de depressão concluiu que a depressão bipolar está associada ao dobro de chance de suicídio, e praticamente o dobro de chances de morte por causas acidentais quando comparado a pacientes com outro tipo de depressão. O tratamento visa a prevenção de tentativas e utiliza a farmacoterapia e psicoterapia. Conclusão: Ainda que não haja estudos voltados especificamente para verificar a eficácia da IAA em indivíduos diagnosticados com TAB, sabe-se que o principal efeito do animal de apoio emocional é aliviar os sintomas presentes nos diversos transtornos psiquiátricos sendo plausível associar a IAA ao tratamento farmacológico e psicoterapêutico padrão, potencializando as chances de sucesso de tratamento e diminuindo os fatores de riscos de possíveis tentativas de suicídio

Tuberculose cutânea disseminada com escrofuloderma associado à tuberculose de arco costal

Os autores relatam caso de tuberculose cutânea disseminada com escrofuloderma associado à tuberculose de arco costal. Paciente de 46 anos, do sexo feminino, há um ano com nódulos de um a 6cm em região cervical, dorso, axilas e regiões glúteas, que culminavam com fistulização e eliminação de secreção purulenta, associados a febre vespertina diária, sudorese noturna e emagrecimento de 10kg nos últimos três meses. A radiografia de tórax mostrou lesão lítica na terceira costela esquerda. A cultura de secreção do nódulo foi positiva para Mycobacterium tuberculosis. O tratamento para tuberculose resultou em melhora clínica e resolução das lesões cutâneas da paciente

Neotropical freshwater fisheries : A dataset of occurrence and abundance of freshwater fishes in the Neotropics

The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
