    Comparison of probabilistic choice models in humans

    BACKGROUND: Probabilistic choice has been attracting attention in psychopharmacology and neuroeconomics. Several parametric models have been proposed for probabilistic choice; entropy model, Prelec's probability weight function, and hyperbola-like probability discounting functions. METHODS: In order to examine (i) fitness of the probabilistic models to behavioral data, (ii) relationships between the parameters and psychological processes, e.g., aversion to possible non-gain in each probabilistic choice and aversion to unpredictability, we estimated the parameters and AICc (Akaike Information Criterion with small sample correction) of the probabilistic choice models by assessing the points of subjective equality at seven probability values (95%–5%). We examined both fitness of the models parametrized by utilizing AICc, and the relationships between the model parameters and equation-free parameter of aversion to possible non-gain. RESULTS: Our results have shown that (i) the goodness of fitness for group data was [Entropy model>Prelec's function>General hyperbola>Simple hyperbola]; while Prelec's function best fitted individual data, (ii) aversion to possible non-gain and aversion to unpredictability are distinct psychological processes. CONCLUSION: Entropy and Prelec models can be utilized in psychopharmacological and neuroeconomic studies of risky decision-making

    Prions: generation and spread versus neurotoxicity.

    Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the aggregation of misfolded proteins in the brain. Among these disorders are the prion diseases, which are transmissible, and in which the misfolded proteins ("prions") are also the infectious agent. Increasingly, it appears that misfolded proteins in Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases and the tauopathies also propagate in a "prion-like" manner. However, the association between prion formation, spread, and neurotoxicity is not clear. Recently, we showed that in prion disease, protein misfolding leads to neurodegeneration through dysregulation of generic proteostatic mechanisms, specifically, the unfolded protein response. Genetic and pharmacological manipulation of the unfolded protein response was neuroprotective despite continuing prion replication, hence dissociating this from neurotoxicity. The data have clear implications for treatment across the spectrum of these disorders, targeting pathogenic processes downstream of protein misfolding

    Thermal Performance Testing of EMU and CSAFE Liquid Cooling Garments

    Future exploration missions require the development of a new liquid cooling garment (LCG) that offers greater system reliability, is more comfortable, and maximizes thermal performance. To inform the development of a future LCG a thermal performance test was conducted to evaluate three factors: (1) the effect of the thermal comfort undergarment (TCU) on tactile and thermal comfort, (2) the comparable thermal performance of an CSAFE developed engineering evaluation unit (EEU) LCG, which uses a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) wicking garment as the base, and (3) the performance of a torso or upper body only LCG configuration to evaluate a proposed auxiliary loop configuration. To evaluate the thermal performance of each configuration a metabolic suit test was conducted, utilizing suited subjects to generate metabolic heat by walking on a treadmill at various speeds. Three (3) test subjects of similar height and weight produced a metabolic load for five tests by either resting (300-600 BTU/hr), walking at a slow pace (1200 BTU/hr), and walking at a brisk pace (2200 BTU/hr). During the test, data was collected that would allow us to track the heat transfer to the LCG and ventilation system to determine the thermal performance of the LCG configurations. Four different test configurations were tested, with one configuration tested twice. The test results show that the CSAFE EEU LCG and EMU LCG had comparable performance. The testing also showed that an auxiliary loop LCG, sized similarly to the shirt-only configuration, should provide adequate cooling for contingency scenarios. Finally, the testing showed the previous analysis that assumed a UA deterioration from the TCU was too conservative and the TCU may prove to be acceptable for future development with additional analysis and testing

    Power dynamics and professional expertise in the communication between specialist nurses and doctors in acute hospital settings

    Aim. The aim of this PhD thesis is to report the sociological position, power dynamics and expertise in the communication between specialist nurses and doctors within NHS acute hospitals. Background. Nursing and healthcare have continually evolved, with new nursing roles interfacing professionally at a more advanced level with doctors. Historically the relationship and interactions have been characterised as the ‘Doctor-Nurse’ game which has been reviewed from many sociological perspectives. However, little has been added to understand the basis of these transactions that take place in the clinical setting between advanced practice nurses and doctors in hospitals. Methods. The primary methods comprised a critical realist approach ethnography, undertaking: fieldwork observations, follow-up interviews and artefact analysis on teams of specialist nurses and doctors working in three NHS hospitals. Seven specialist teams comprising 30 specialist nurses and 53 doctors of all grades were directly studied, alongside other peripheral members of the healthcare team as they delivered care. Results. The findings in this study demonstrate that much has changed concerning the role of the specialist nurse: professionally, clinically and sociologically. Four main themes emerged from the research: defining a new relationship between medicine and nursing; social space, development of ‘field’ in hospital care, division of labour, expertise and a new interaction model. The basis of the relationship has changed through bureaucratic challenges to the medical role which has resulted in changes to nursing power and its application in the clinical field in the new care models. There are a number of new strategies employed by both groups in the management of professional role, knowledge base, expertise and clinical work in the field. The communication strategies are more complex with a sophisticated coalition model of organisation. However, some ‘doctor-nurse games’ are still played out in the clinical setting, based upon traditional divisions of labour and power. This relationship has also created other tensions in the workspace particularly with junior medical staff, nursing staff and administrators

    Adaptive Avoidance of Reef Noise

    Auditory information is widely used throughout the animal kingdom in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Some marine species are dependent on reefs for adult survival and reproduction, and are known to use reef noise to guide orientation towards suitable habitat. Many others that forage in food-rich inshore waters would, however, benefit from avoiding the high density of predators resident on reefs, but nothing is known about whether acoustic cues are used in this context. By analysing a sample of nearly 700,000 crustaceans, caught during experimental playbacks in light traps in the Great Barrier Reef lagoon, we demonstrate an auditory capability in a broad suite of previously neglected taxa, and provide the first evidence in any marine organisms that reef noise can act as a deterrent. In contrast to the larvae of species that require reef habitat for future success, which showed an attraction to broadcasted reef noise, taxa with a pelagic or nocturnally emergent lifestyle actively avoided it. Our results suggest that a far greater range of invertebrate taxa than previously thought can respond to acoustic cues, emphasising yet further the potential negative impact of globally increasing levels of underwater anthropogenic noise

    Panel options for large precision radio telescopes

    The Cornell Caltech Atacama Telescope (CCAT) is a 25 m diameter telescope that will operate at wavelengths as short as 200 microns. CCAT will have active surface control to correct for gravitational and thermal distortions in the reflector support structure. The accuracy and stability of the reflector panels are critical to meeting the 10 micron HWFE (half wave front error) for the whole system. A system analysis based upon a versatile generic panel design has been developed and applied to numerous possible panel configurations. The error analysis includes the manufacturing errors plus the distortions from gravity, wind and thermal environment. The system performance as a function of panel size and construction material is presented. A compound panel approach is also described in which the reflecting surface is provided by tiles mounted on thermally stable and stiff sub-frames. This approach separates the function of providing an accurate reflecting surface from the requirement for a stable structure that is attached to the reflector support structure on three computer controlled actuators. The analysis indicates that there are several compound panel configurations that will easily meet the stringent CCAT requirements

    Testicular-sparing surgery in the pediatric population: Multicenter review of practice with review of the literature

    Purpose of review Pediatric testicular tumors have predominantly favorable histology, which may permit testicular sparing surgery (TSS). Limited guidance exists for TSS in adults and is absent in pediatric practice. The international survey and retrospective case series evaluated the current use of TSS in pediatric testicular tumors. Alongside the complementary literature review, the aim of this work was to provide evidence that could be used to produce a guideline document. Recent findings Published evidence advocates small mass size as an indicator for TSS, this was not supported in the pediatric literature. Frozen section examination at TSS was not always performed by surgeons and yet the literature reports close to 100% specificity. Tumor markers and ultrasound findings are also used as indicators for TSS, a finding reflected in our survey results. Summary Multiple case series are reported but no large data series exists, which will require international collaboration rather than a drive to publish the results of individual centers. Common indicators for TSS use; such as tumor markers and imaging are known but further work needs to evaluate the role of on-table histology and the risks of this not being available
