Aggregation-induced emission of [3]cumulenes functionalized with heptagon-containing polyphenylenes. Chemical Communications, online (2018). DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1039/C8CC00386FWe report the luminiscence at room temperature by aggregate formation of [3]cumulenes functionalized with propeller-like heptagon-containing polyphenylenes. These endgroups turn on the emission of a [3]cumulene by steric protection and restriction of their intramolecular rotations in the aggregates.European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (ERC-2015 -677023).Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO, Spain – FEDER) (CTQ2015-70283-P, CTQ2014-53598-R, RyC-2013-12943).Fundação para a Ciência e a tecnologia (Portugal, IF/00759/2013, SFRH/BPD/75782/2011,SFRH/BPD/96707/2013,UID/NAN/50024/2013)

Biocompatible hybrids based on nanographene oxide covalently linked to glycolporphyrins: synthesis, characterization and biological evaluation

    Get PDF
The major limitation in the development of hybrids based on graphene oxide (GO) and porphyrins is their dispersibility and stability in aqueous systems due to the hydrophobic character induced by porphyrins. Most of the previous approaches reported the direct functionalization of GO with polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains followed by the self-assembly of porphyrins by π-π interactions. Here, new hybrids were prepared using porphyrins previously functionalized with different number/types of glycol branches to be covalently attached through esterification to the carboxyl groups of GO sheets of nanometric dimensions. The number of the glycol chains and its relative position in the porphyrin core showed to be fundamental to improve the hybrids dispersion and stability in aqueous solutions. The best performing hybrids were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The in vitro biocompatibility assessment of these hybrids was conducted using human Saos-2 cells. Their effects on cell proliferation and viability, the generation of reactive oxygen species as well as the cell morphology after cell uptake were analysed. The results demonstrate the biocompatibility of these hybrid nanomaterials with human Saos-2 cells, which is very promising for future application in biomedicine namely in cancer therapy.publishe

New triazine bridged triads based on BODIPY-porphyrin systems: extended absorption, efficient energy transfer and upconverted emission

Two novel triads connecting a BODIPY to ethylenediamine substituted porphyrins via triazine linker have been synthesized and characterized. One of the triads is a linear D-A structure with one BODIPY (D) and one porphyrin (A) bridged by the triazine linker and the other one is a branched A-D4 structure with the porphyrin core linked to four BODIPY units. The triads show extended absorption in the visible region with contributions from both porphyrin (Soret band centred at 410–430 nm) and BODIPY units (strong absorption at ≈ 502 nm) in good agreement with the expected molar ratio. Both triads exhibit linear and nonlinear optical properties featuring an efficient energy transfer from the BODIPY donor to the porphyrin acceptor. The nonlinear upconverted emission properties of the triads were studied by two-photon excitation in the Near-infrared (NIR, 710–930 nm). The maximum two-photon absorption cross-section values for the triads (40–70 GM) are larger than those typically reported in this wavelength range for porphyrins and BODIPY. Both the green emission of BODIPY (≈514 nm) and the red emission of porphyrins (650–750 nm) were observed under NIR excitation at 930 nm. The distinct features of triads, namely i) an extended absorption; ii) an efficient energy transfer and iii) the nonlinear upconverted emission featuring a large separation between the excitation and emission wavelengths could be beneficial for application in sensing and imaging procedures.publishe

Objective: To update the recommendations for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with biological and targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs and tsDMARDs), endorsed by the Portuguese Society of Rheumatology (SPR). Methods: These treatment recommendations were formulated by Portuguese rheumatologists taking into account previous recommendations, new literature evidence and consensus opinion. At a national meeting, in a virtual format, three of the ten previous recommendations were re-addressed and discussed after a more focused literature review. A first draft of the updated recommendations was elaborated by a team of SPR rheumatologists from the SPR rheumatoid arthritis study group, GEAR. The resulting document circulated among all SPR rheumatologists for discussion and input. The level of agreement with each of all the recommendations was anonymously voted online by all SPR rheumatologists. Results: These recommendations cover general aspects such as shared decision, treatment objectives, systematic assessment of disease activity and burden and its registry in Reuma.pt. Consensus was also achieved regarding specific aspects such as initiation of bDMARDs and tsDMARDs, assessment of treatment response, switching and definition of persistent remission. Conclusion: These recommendations may be used for guidance of treatment with bDMARDs and tsDMARDs in patients with RA. As more evidence becomes available and more therapies are licensed, these recommendations will be updated.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Study resulting from bibliographic research on personal archives in which documents of different genres are usually found, among them, photographs very often, evidencing the importance of these archives for individual and family memory. Organicity and authenticity are the characteristics that qualify personal archives and their photographs as such and what differ them from collections. This paper aims to verify how these archives are approached in the Portuguese language literature of journal articles, with emphasis on the study of the issue of production context of photographs in the personal archives, and the observance of the photographs, from the following categories of analysis: theme approach, empirical field and results. It should be noted that the technical treatment of these documents presents specificities, and it is necessary to examine whether the area literature has registered these changes regarding the theoretical and empirical aspects of organization and with regard to the growth of these documents in quantity and importance. Therefore, a review of the literature in Portuguese language were carried out in journals papers in the area of Information Science and Archival Science, with quantitative-qualitative approach and observance of the analysis categories. It is observed that just as the literature on photographic documents hardly mentions the personal archives, the inverse also happens: the literature on personal archives makes little mention of photographic documents, a documental genre found very often in personal and family archives. Both themes are related, but the literature encompassing the intersection between them is very scanty, especially in the chosen snippet

Nonlinear emission of quinolizinium-based dyes with application in fluorescence lifetime imaging

© 2014 American Chemical Society.Charged molecules based on the quinolizinum cation have potential applications as labels in fluorescence imaging in biological media under nonlinear excitation. A systematic study of the linear and nonlinear photophysics of derivatives of the quinolizinum cation substituted by either dimethylaniline or methoxyphenyl electron donors is performed. The effects of donor strength, conjugation length, and symmetry in the two-photon emission efficiency are analyzed in detail. The best performing nonlinear fluorophore, with two-photon absorption cross sections of 1140 GM and an emission quantum yield of 0.22, is characterized by a symmetric D-π-A(+)-π-D architecture based on the methoxyphenyl substituent. Application of this molecule as a fluorescent marker in optical microscopy of living cells revealed that, under favorable conditions, the fluorophore can be localized in the cytoplasmatic compartment of the cell, staining vesicular shape organelles. At higher dye concentrations and longer staining times, the fluorophore can also penetrate into the nucleus. The nonlinearly excited fluorescence lifetime imaging shows that the fluorophore lifetime is sensitive to its location in the different cell compartments. Using fluorescence lifetime microscopy, a multicolor map of the cell is drafted with a single dye.The authors acknowledge financial support from the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Project CTQ2011-24715), the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Projects PTDC/CTM-POL/114367/2009, RECI/CTM-POL/0342/2012) and a grant from the Universidad de Alcalá (TC).info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Simple Perylene Diimide Cyclohexane Derivative With Combined CPL and TPA Properties

    No full text
The Supplementary Material for this article can be found online at: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fchem. 2020.00306/full#supplementary-materialIn this work we describe the linear and non-linear (chiro)optical properties of an enantiopure bis-perylenediimide (PDI) cyclohexane derivative. This compound exhibits upconversion based on a two-photon absorption (TPA) process with a cross-section value of 70 GM together with emission of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), showing a glum in the range of 10−3. This simple structure represents one of the scarce examples of purely organic compounds combining both TPA and CPL responses, together with large values of molar absorptivity and fluorescence quantum yield with emission in the 500–600 nm. Self-assembly induced by introduction of a poor solvent allows for a spectacular shift of the emission into the near-infrared (NIR, 650–750 nm) by formation of well-defined rotationally displaced dimers. Therefore, we are here presenting a versatile platform whose optical properties can be simply tuned by self-assembly or by functionalization of the electron-deficient aromatic core of PDIs.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades PG2018-101181-B-I00Spanish Government CTQ2017-85454-C2-1-PEuropean Research Council (ERC) ERC-2015-STG-677023MINECO RyC-2013-12943Spanish GovernmentPortuguese Foundation for Science and TechnologyPOCIEuropean Union (EU) PTDC/NAN-MAT/29317/2017 PTDC/QUI-QFI/29319/2017 UIDB/00100/202
