In this thesis, we seek to investigate and discuss how Africans and Afro-Brazilians are represented in the museological institutions of the state of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. But above all, to understand how these institutions have acted as tools of construction/annulment of identities from representations, presences and absences, in the specific case of populations of African origin, seeking to identify and present proposals that may contribute to a public policy for the sector. Thus, initially, we seek to understand the public policies focused on museums and their interfaces with the policies of racial equality promotion, aimed at Afro-Brazilian populations and their articulations at the federal level. In the second step, we focus on Santa Catarina, trying to understand the relations between these policies, the preservation of heritage and to carry out a study about the museums of the state and the policies that are inserted at the state and national levels. Also, from the application of research instruments, we tried to map the museums in Santa Catarina that have collection related to populations of African origin, as well as represent them in exhibitions and other activities, and how they perceive the theme in their institutions. And from the diagnosis and tabulation of the data, we start from a historical approach of this process, outlining the mentalities that marked the construction of the identities the state. Finally, we seek to work in the field from the premises of social museology, with the proposition of actions, which we call affirmative action of museological character, initiatives of formation and training on museum and Afro-Brazilian memory and culture, aiming to contribute to the construction of public policies that articulate museums and the promotion of racial equality, which contribute to the valorization of diversity and the strengthening of the antiracist struggle in the state of Santa Catarina.

This study combines critical race theory and cultural capital to examine the experiences of Latina/o graduate students as they worked toward achieving a career in health-allied fields, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, health administration, and communication disorders. The study posed the following questions: 1) What forms of community cultural wealth (cultural capital) did participants draw from to achieve their educational goals in the graduate program? 2) How did participants convert their community cultural wealth (cultural capital) into educational outcomes, career attainment, and civic engagement? A counter-story telling approach was used to elicit a reflective account of participants’ daily life, elucidating the relationship between “pedagogies of the home” and participants’ ability to navigate educational environments successfully. Forms of community cultural wealth (cultural capital) analyzed included: aspirational, linguistic, familia elligence, were also found to be relevant in the conversion of capital. Implications for research and practice in higher education settings will be discussed

This qualitative study combines critical race theory, cultural capital theory, and counter-storytelling to examine the experiences of Latina/o in graduate health care programs. Community cultural wealth provided the framework to investigate the mechanisms by which students converted their sociocultural assets into the kinds of social, cultural, and educational capital needed to succeed in a graduate program and pursue their career goals. A qualitative content analysis was employed to interpret participants’ conversion experiences. The forms of community cultural wealth described by Yosso – aspirational, linguistic, familial, navigational, social, and resistant – intersected and interacted with one another. Aspirational and linguistic forms of capital were converted into occupational attainment; familial capital was converted into educational and occupational outcomes; navigational and social forms of capital were converted into educational outcomes, and resistant capital was converted into civic engagement. Recommendations for practice and future research are discussed

The aim of the present paper is to highlight some aspects of bilingualism in a German minority language community located in the South of Brazil. Based on ethnographic research methods, the study describes language use in face-to-face interactions between bilingual students and their teacher in a monolingual primary school, focusing on Portuguese-German code-switching from a socio-functional perspective. The results suggest that code-switching should not be associated with language deficit, but with the bilingual discourse since the phenomenon could be seen both as a relevant conversational strategy as well as a significant learning resource among bilingual children.O presente artigo tem por objetivo contribuir para a compreensão de aspectos do bilingüismo social de um grupo de língua minoritária, localizado em área de imigração alemã no sul do Brasil.
