Thermal properties of electrodeposited bismuth telluride nanowires embedded in amorphous alumina

3 pages, 3 figures.Bismuth telluride nanowires are of interest for thermoelectric applications because of the predicted enhancement in the thermoelectric figure-of-merit in nanowire structures. In this letter, we carried out temperature-dependent thermal diffusivity characterization of a 40 nm diameter Bi2Te3 nanowires/alumina nanocomposite. Measured thermal diffusivity of the composite decreases from 9.2×10–7 m2 s–1 at 150 K to 6.9×10–7 m2 s–1 at 300 K and is lower than thermal diffusivity of unfilled alumina templates. Effective medium calculations indicate that the thermal conductivity along nanowires axis is at least an order of magnitude lower than thermal conductivity of the bulk bismuth telluride.G.C. would like to acknowledge financial support from JPL and DOE.

Revising a foreign language curriculum: a challenging and enhancing experience at a public school in bogotá

Curriculum design essentially improves education standards; however, for teachers it remains a taboo kept for academics. Nevertheless, curriculum design begins with teacher’s reflections. It goes from examining situations to piloting and adjusting proposals. This project involved teachers interested in improving the English learning process at a technical public school. The objective was designing a curriculum that conveyed community interests. First, documents describing existing curricular guidelines were analyzed, then surveys were applied, they evidenced strengths and weaknesses of the current program. Data interpretation showed mixed perceptions regarding the English programme among community members. Even teachers had different perceptions about curricular elements presented in school documents. This phenomenon leads us to consider the implications of a project regarding curriculum design.

    Swallowing dysfunction in cancer patients

Purpose Dysphagia (swallowing dysfunction) is a debilitating, depressing, and potentially life-threatening complication in cancer patients that is likely underreported. The present paper is aimed to review relevant dysphagia literature between 1990 and 2010 with a focus on assessment tools, prevalence, complications, and impact on quality of life in patients with a variety of different cancers, particularly in those treated with curative chemoradiation for head and neck cancer. Methods The literature search was limited to the English language and included both MEDLINE/PubMed and EMBASE. The search focused on papers reporting dysphagia as a side effect of cancer and cancer therapy. We identified relevant literature through the primary literature search and by articles identified in references. Results A wide range of assessment tools for dysphagia was identified. Dysphagia is related to a number of factors such as direct impact of the tumor, cancer resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy and to newer therapies such as epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors. Concomitant oral complications such as xerostomia may exacerbate subjective dysphagia. Most literature focuses on head and neck cancer, but dysphagia is also common in other types of cancer. Conclusions Swallowing impairment is a clinically relevant acute and long-term complication in patients with a wide variety of cancers. More prospective studies on the course of dysphagia and impact on quality of life from baseline to long-term follow-up after various treatment modalities, including targeted therapies, are needed

First observations of oblique ionospheric sounding chirp signal in Mexico

The results of the first experiment of oblique ionospheric sounding (OIS) chirp signal reception in Mexico are reported. Maximal and Lowest Observed Frequencies variations were studied under the quiet Space Weather conditions. The diurnal ionospheric variations by OIS signal confirm the results based on GNSS data in the Mexican region. The best HF radio propagation conditions along the considered path are during morning and daytime hours. The multi-hop propagation is frequent. The interlayer propagation modes are present at nighttime

Breakdown of Mucin as Barrier to Digestive Enzymes in the Ischemic Rat Small Intestine

Loss of integrity of the epithelial/mucosal barrier in the small intestine has been associated with different pathologies that originate and/or develop in the gastrointestinal tract. We showed recently that mucin, the main protein in the mucus layer, is disrupted during early periods of intestinal ischemia. This event is accompanied by entry of pancreatic digestive enzymes into the intestinal wall. We hypothesize that the mucin-containing mucus layer is the main barrier preventing digestive enzymes from contacting the epithelium. Mucin breakdown may render the epithelium accessible to pancreatic enzymes, causing its disruption and increased permeability. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of mucin as a protection for epithelial integrity and function. A rat model of 30 min splanchnic arterial occlusion (SAO) was used to study the degradation of two mucin isoforms (mucin 2 and 13) and two epithelial membrane proteins (E-cadherin and toll-like receptor 4, TLR4). In addition, the role of digestive enzymes in mucin breakdown was assessed in this model by luminal inhibition with acarbose, tranexamic acid, or nafamostat mesilate. Furthermore, the protective effect of the mucin layer against trypsin-mediated disruption of the intestinal epithelium was studied in vitro. Rats after SAO showed degradation of mucin 2 and fragmentation of mucin 13, which was not prevented by protease inhibition. Mucin breakdown was accompanied by increased intestinal permeability to FITC-dextran as well as degradation of E-cadherin and TLR4. Addition of mucin to intestinal epithelial cells in vitro protected against trypsin-mediated degradation of E-cadherin and TLR4 and reduced permeability of FITC-dextran across the monolayer. These results indicate that mucin plays an important role in the preservation of the mucosal barrier and that ischemia but not digestive enzymes disturbs mucin integrity, while digestive enzymes actively mediate epithelial cell disruption
