    Common mental disorders and sociodemographic characteristics: baseline findings of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

    Introduction: the patients admitted to the Crisis Intervention Unit (UIC) have not been characterized in the "Luis Ramírez López" Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of the Guantánamo province.Objective: to characterize hospital admissions in said unit in the period 2015-2017.Method: a descriptive and retrospective study of the patients admitted to this unit was carried out (n=538). The variables were studied: age, sex, origin, diagnosis and stay.Results: the highest proportion of admitted patients was between 18 and 23 years old (21.9%), they were female (53.9%), they came from the Guantanamo municipality (42.0%), the most frequent diagnosis was Depressive adjustment disorder (27.9%) and 66.4% had a hospital stay of less than 7 days.Conclusions: Patients in the productive stage of life were admitted to the Crisis Intervention Unit, especially women with depressive disorders, which shows the social relevance of their study.Introducción: en el Hospital Psiquiátrico Provincial "Luis Ramírez López" de la provincia Guantánamo no se han caracterizado los pacientes ingresados en la Unidad de Intervención en Crisis (UIC).Objetivo: caracterizar las admisiones hospitalarias en la citada unidad en el periodo comprendido 2015-2017.Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y retrospectivo de los pacientes que ingresaron en esta unidad (n=538). Se estudiaron las variables: edad, sexo, procedencia, diagnóstico y estadía.Resultados: la mayor proporción de los pacientes admitidos tenía entre 18 y 23 años (21,9 %), eran del sexo femenino (53,9 %), procedieron del municipio Guantánamo (42,0 %), el diagnóstico más frecuente fue el trastorno de adaptación depresivo (27,9 %) y el 66,4 % tuvo una estadía hospitalaria menor de 7 días.Conclusiones: en la Unidad de Intervención en Crisis se admitieron pacientes en la etapa productiva de la vida, sobre todo mujeres con trastornos depresivos, lo que muestra la pertinencia social de su estudio.Introdução: os pacientes admitidos na Unidade de Intervenção de Crise (UIC) não foram caracterizados no Hospital Psiquiátrico Provincial "Luis Ramírez López" da Província de Guantánamo.Objetivo: caracterizar internações hospitalares na referida unidade no período 2015-2017.Método: estudo descritivo e retrospectivo dos pacientes admitidos nesta unidade (n=538). As variáveis foram estudadas: idade, sexo, origem, diagnóstico e permanência.Resultados: a maior proporção de pacientes internados foi entre 18 e 23 anos (21,9%), eram do sexo feminino (53,9%), procedentes do município de Guantánamo (42,0%), o diagnóstico mais frequente foi Transtorno de ajuste depressivo (27,9%) e 66,4% tiveram internação hospitalar inferior a 7 dias.Conclusões: pacientes em estágio produtivo de vida foram admitidos na Unidade de Intervenção à Crise, especialmente mulheres com transtornos depressivos, o que mostra a relevância social de seu estudo

    Complex-valued wavelet lifting and applications

    Signals with irregular sampling structures arise naturally in many fields. In applications such as spectral decomposition and nonparametric regression, classical methods often assume a regular sampling pattern, thus cannot be applied without prior data processing. This work proposes new complex-valued analysis techniques based on the wavelet lifting scheme that removes ‘one coefficient at a time’. Our proposed lifting transform can be applied directly to irregularly sampled data and is able to adapt to the signal(s)’ characteristics. As our new lifting scheme produces complex-valued wavelet coefficients, it provides an alternative to the Fourier transform for irregular designs, allowing phase or directional information to be represented. We discuss applications in bivariate time series analysis, where the complex-valued lifting construction allows for coherence and phase quantification. We also demonstrate the potential of this flexible methodology over real-valued analysis in the nonparametric regression context

    Common mental disorders and sociodemographic characteristics: baseline findings of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil)

    Objective: To assess the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) and the association of CMD with sociodemographic characteristics in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSABrasil) cohort. Methods: We analyzed data from the cross-sectional baseline assessment of the ELSA-Brasil, a cohort study of 15,105 civil servants from six Brazilian cities. The Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R) was used to investigate the presence of CMD, with a score X 12 indicating a current CMD (last week). Specific diagnostic algorithms for each disorder were based on the ICD-10 diagnostic criteria. Prevalence ratios (PR) of the association between CMD and sociodemographic characteristics were estimated by Poisson regression. Results: CMD (CIS-R score X 12) was found in 26.8% (95% confidence intervals [95%CI] 26.1-27.5). The highest burden occurred among women (PR 1.9; 95%CI 1.8-2.0), the youngest (PR 1.7; 95%CI 1.5-1.9), non-white individuals, and those without a university degree. The most frequent diagnostic category was anxiety disorders (16.2%), followed by depressive episodes (4.2%). Conclusion: The burden of CMD was high, particularly among the more socially vulnerable groups. These findings highlight the need to strengthen public policies aimed to address health inequities related to mental disorders

    Data standardization of plant-pollinator interactions

    Background: Animal pollination is an important ecosystem function and service, ensuring both the integrity of natural systems and human well-being. Although many knowledge shortfalls remain, some high-quality data sets on biological interactions are now available. The development and adoption of standards for biodiversity data and metadata has promoted great advances in biological data sharing and aggregation, supporting large-scale studies and science-based public policies. However, these standards are currently not suitable to fully support interaction data sharing. Results: Here we present a vocabulary of terms and a data model for sharing plant–pollinator interactions data based on the Darwin Core standard. The vocabulary introduces 48 new terms targeting several aspects of plant–pollinator interactions and can be used to capture information from different approaches and scales. Additionally, we provide solutions for data serialization using RDF, XML, and DwC-Archives and recommendations of existing controlled vocabularies for some of the terms. Our contribution supports open access to standardized data on plant–pollinator interactions. Conclusions: The adoption of the vocabulary would facilitate data sharing to support studies ranging from the spatial and temporal distribution of interactions to the taxonomic, phenological, functional, and phylogenetic aspects of plant–pollinator interactions. We expect to fill data and knowledge gaps, thus further enabling scientific research on the ecology and evolution of plant–pollinator communities, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, and the development of public policies. The proposed data model is flexible and can be adapted for sharing other types of interactions data by developing discipline-specific vocabularies of terms.Fil: Salim, José A.     Long-Lasting Efficacy of Radio Electric Asymmetric Conveyer Neuromodulation Treatment on Functional Dysmetria, an Adaptive Motor Behavior

    BackgroundFluctuating asymmetry (FA) is widely defined as the deviation from perfect bilateral symmetry and is considered an epigenetic measure of environmental stress. Rinaldi and Fontani hypothesized that the FA morpho-functional changes originate from an adaptive motor behavior determined by functional alterations in the cerebellum and neural circuits, not caused by a lesion, but induced by environmental stress. They called this phenomenon functional dysmetria (FD). On this premise, they developed the radio electric asymmetric conveyer (REAC) technology, a neuromodulation technology aimed at optimizing the best neuro-psycho-motor strategies in relation to environmental interaction.AimsPrevious studies showed that specific REAC neuro postural optimization (NPO) treatment can induce stable FD recovery. This study aimed to verify the duration of the NPO effect in inducing the stable FD recovery over timeMaterials and methodsData were retrospectively collected from a population of 29,794 subjects who underwent a specific semiological FD assessment and received the NPO treatment, regardless of the pathology referred.ResultsThe analysis of the data collected by the various participants in the study led us to ascertain the disappearance of FD in 100% of the cases treated, with a stability of the result detected up to 18 years after the single administration of the REAC NPO treatment.ConclusionsThe REAC NPO neurobiological modulation treatment consisting of a single administration surprisingly maintains a very long efficacy in the correction of FD. This effect can be explained as the long-lasting capacity of the NPO treatment to induce greater functional efficiency of the brain dynamics as proven in previous studies
