Genus im DaF-Unterricht in Italien: Was machen die Lerner?

Gender classification in German is considered a rather intricate complex field of German grammar; gender selection is only partially rule-based and the existing rules are not only com-plex but their validity is often restricted as well. Therefore it is a received opinion that the ac-quisition of gender assignment is one of the most difficult problems learners of German as a foreign language have to face. Contrary to this general view, throughout many years of teaching German as a foreign language in Italy me and my colleague Marion Weerning (in this volume) did not receive the impression that gender really presents a major problem. Therefore we decided to carry out an empirical study. The design and the results of this study will be illustrated in the present paper. It will be shown that gender assignment is in fact more of a problem than was initially assumed. A detailed analysis demonstrates, however, that good and bad scores in gender assignment are not due to chance but can be explained by a combination of factors. The results also seem to indicate that learners develop a range of gender as¬signment rules in spite of the fact that gender is neither a frequent nor a systematically analysed topic in textbooks or in grammars

Expression of flavin-containing monooxygenases in the human brain

Flavin-containing Monooxygenases (FMOs) were found in the human brain basal-ganglia, an area affected by neurodegenerative disorders. Full length radiolabelled cDNA probes encoding each of the five known FMOs were used in northern blot hybridisation. FMO3 and FMO4 mRNAs were detected in thalamus, substantia nigra, subthalamic nucleus and corpus callosum regions. In-situ hybridisation analysis of brain sections from normal and Parkinsons disease individuals was carried out using cRNA FMO3 and FMO4 probes. Both mRNAs were detected in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra and red nucleus, neurons of the subthalamic nucleus, neurons of the thalamus and pyramidal cells of Ammons horn. Neither mRNA was found in the crus cerebre, internal capsule or superior colliculus of mid brain, or the internal capsule, putamen, dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. FMO3 was detected in higher levels than FMO4. Immunocytochemistry confirmed FMO3 is present in the same neuronal types as its mRNA. To confirm expression in human brain (and not other cross-reacting FMO mRNAs), RT-PCR of RNA from the thalamus of human subjects was undertaken. Each of the five known FMO DNA sequences were amplified using specific primers. Neither FMO1 or FMO2 sequences were amplified. The PCR product for FMO3 was of the expected size. Restriction digestion analysis and Southern blotting confirmed FMO3 is expressed in human brain. FMO5 gave a positive result which was an RT-PCR of RNA from human subthalamic nucleus. Due to the species difference in FMO expression it was of interest to see if other primates express FMO3 in brain. Substantia nigra, thalamus, midbrain and central brain regions were dissected from Orang-utan and Gorilla brain and RNA prepared. Each FMO sequence was amplified using RT-PCR reactions. No amplification products were observed for FMO1, FMO2 or FMO5. However, FMO3 amplification products were detected and a faint amplification product for FMO4 was observed

Characteristics and Workload of Full-Time Faculty in Baccalaureate Dental Hygiene Programs

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and workload of full-time faculty in baccalaureate dental hygiene programs. A mail questionnaire was sent to program administrators for distribution to faculty. Program response rate was 89.7% (26/29) and full-time faculty response rate was 68.3% (114/167). The number of faculty who hold the Associate or Assistant Professor ranks was similar (35.1% and 34.2%, respectively). Forty percent of faculty are not on tenure track and 38.6% are tenured. Faculty were most likely to be White (94%) and female (96%) with an average age of 50.2 years. Faculty reported levels of dissatisfaction with time available for student advisement, time available for class preparation, workload, time available to keep current in field, and salary. About 56% (39-70) of the faculty plan to retire from the labor force in 10 years or less. Faculty reported an average work week of 50.5 hours, which includes 46.9 hours spent on paid activities and 3.6 hours spent on unpaid activities. In specific workload activities, the allocation of faculty time was 56.8% on teaching undergraduate students, 14.9% on institutional service, and 9.5% on research/scholarship. 47 percent of the faculty described their primary professional research as program/curriculum design and 78% were not engaged in funded research. The average number of professional presentations outnumbered all other types of scholarly activity/publications. Faculty spent significantly more time than they preferred on teaching undergraduate students and on institutional service. Faculty spent significantly less time than they preferred on teaching graduate/first professional students, on research/scholarship, on professional growth, and on public service. Faculty in Masters institutions spent significantly more time in Public Service than those in Doctorate and Specialized institutions. Several conclusions were made based on findings: there is a lack of diversity within the dental hygiene profession in regards to underrepresented minorities and males; there will be a noticeable shortage of dental hygiene faculty as current faculty age and retire; there is a lack of information regarding dental hygiene faculty characteristics, workload, working conditions, and effect of institution type. Implications on the profession and suggestions for future studies were presented

A Program Evaluation of Middle School Science Teachers’ Perceptions and Instructional Practices with the Next Generation Science Standards: Science and Engineering Practices

    Get PDF
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is the most recent reform in science education across the United States. The NGSS demands a shift in both teaching and learning. Yet there is no direction on how teachers are to implement this shift in their classrooms. This mixed-methods study examined 12 middle school teachers’ perceptions and the instructional practices within the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) by using interviews and classroom observations. Findings suggest that there was a shift in instructional practices and a varying degree of implementation of the eight SEPs. The data analysis identified ongoing needs related to specific professional development. The researcher concluded that district leaders and school principals need to provide tangible supports to teachers in order to successfully meet the demands of this new vision of science education

Islamic Conversion Confined: A Look at Why Black Men Convert to Islam While Incarcerated and the Effects Conversion has on their Processes of Reentry

Based on ten in-depth interviews with Black men who converted to Islam while incarcerated, this project serves to better understand why Black men in prison convert to Islam, the effects conversion has on their prison time and on their reentry processes. In this paper, I argue that conversion to Islam among Black men in prison allows them to construct a new conception of self, which further allows them manage their prison time. I also argue that the presence of conversion to Islam in prisons helps to influence inmate culture and leads to the formation of a new masculinity within the prison that challenges the dominant form. Lastly, I consider Islam and the personal narratives it provides the men with as a way in which they are able to construct post-prison citizenships, while engaging in processes of reentry. Islam serves as a resource, which helps the men re-develop a bond with society and gain a level of control over their conditions

The declining Mass attendance and participation in campus ministries at Cabrini University prompted this action research project. It was designed to engage students in guided dialogue defending key Christian doctrines to boost their Mass attendance and deepen their spiritual engagement. By involving seventeen students and employing interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaires, and surveys, the intersection of religion and spirituality among young adults was explored. Insights highlighted the participants’ perspectives regarding declining Mass attendance and disengagement from institutionalized religion. Meaningful dialogue around fundamental Christian doctrines, such as God’s existence and Jesus’ death and resurrection, was fostered to motivate students to increase Mass attendance and active participation in campus ministry programming. Future researchers should explore means for establishing connections between campus ministers and students holding diverse beliefs, fostering inclusivity and understanding within the community, and promoting personal growth among young adults. Continued support and mentorship for young adults exploring spirituality and religiosity, during the transition from late adolescence to early adulthood, are crucial. Understanding the processes behind religious change during this critical life stage is also essential. Moreover, literature on these endeavors needs updating with research on the contemporary landscape of Catholic campus ministries. By embracing the inclusive ethos of Catholicism, campus ministries can evolve into beacons of faith in Christ for the spiritual needs of students. Collaboration among Christians of different denominations can further enrich this endeavor for the benefit of college students
