Genuinely tenseless: encoding time in Cantonese

    Get PDF
Languages without overt marking of tense have been commonly analyzedas having covert tense, either in the form of a phonologically null tense morpheme ora post-LF semantic rule. We argue that the notion of (neo-Reichenbachian) tense isnot only unnecessary for the analysis of Cantonese, but also falls short of accountingfor temporal reference in this language. Following Pancheva & Zubizarreta (2020,2021) on Paraguayan Guarani, we propose an analysis of Cantonese that manipulatesthe temporal parameter of the evaluation context in lieu of tense. A more generalcontribution of this line of work is the proposal that tense is not a semantic universal

A fluorescence study of the ternary system lecithin-sodium deoxycholate-water showing structural transformations

    Get PDF
AbstractA fluorescence method was applied to study structural transitions occurring in the ternary system lecithinsodium deoxycholate-water. The method is based on binding of the hydrophilic probe rhodamine-B to the structures at molar ratios of lecithin and deoxycholate (L/D) ranging from 0.16 to 10.7. The relationship between the fluorescence intensity and L/D ratio was sharply altered at molar ratios of 0.9 and 4.5. Thus three L/D regions could be distinguished and inflection points were estimated for each one. It is suggested that the L/D values of the sharp transitions (0.9 and 4.5) and the inflection points (0.5, 1.5 and 5.5) indicate generation of new types of molecular arrangements in the ternary system

    Get PDF
This narrative review provides a significant contribution to the field of developmental disabilities by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the prevalence and patterns of malnutrition in individuals with cerebral palsy. The findings from this study shed light on the high prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors, such as motor impairment severity, functional limitations, feeding difficulties, and socio-demographic factors. By synthesizing the existing literature from global studies, this manuscript enhances our understanding of the complex relationship between malnutrition and cerebral palsy, providing valuable insights for clinicians, researchers, and policymakers. The comprehensive nature of this review, encompassing various continents and countries, helps to identify regional variations in malnutrition prevalence and highlights the need for targeted interventions and tailored nutritional care strategies for individuals with cerebral palsy worldwide

On the max-semistable limit of maxima of stationary sequences with missing values

    Get PDF
Let [X(n)] be a stationary sequence with marginal distribution in the domain of attraction of a max-semistable distribution. This includes all distributions in the domain of attraction of any max-stable distribution and also other distributions like some integer-valued distributions with exponential type tails such as the Negative Binomial case. We consider the effect of missing values on the distribution of the maximum term. The pattern Of Occurrence of the missing values must be either iid or strongly mixing. We obtain the expression of the extremal index for the resulting sequence. The results generalize and extend the ones obtained for the max-stable domain of attraction. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. The Orientation of Evidentials in Attitude Contexts: A Case Study Based on Narratives in Paraguayan Guarani

    No full text
This paper examines the orientation of evidentials in complements of attitude verbs, with Paraguayan Guarani evidential ra’e as a case study. It argues that embedded evidentials can be directed either towards the speaker or towards a matrix attitude-holder argument (e.g., the subject of the attitude verb) and that a syntactic representation of the evidence-acquisition event, with its pronominal subject, in the lower end of the CP field, is well-poised to capture this potential ambiguity. Language-particular properties can also play a determining role in the orientation of the embedded evidential, as is the case of the subordinator ha in Paraguayan Guarani. It is argued that this subordinator requires the presence of a Complementizer specified with a (strong) Modal component (which encodes certainty/commitment on the part of the attitude holder with respect to the embedded proposition) and that this property biases the orientation of ra’e towards the matrix attitude-holder argument

Karyological evidence for meiosis in the three different types of life cycles existing in Agaricus bisporus

    No full text
International audienceIn Agaricus bisporus all cytological studies performed until now concerned the pseudohomothallic and bisporic var. bisporus. In the past 12 y two tetrasporic varieties have been described, the heterothallic var. burnettii and the homothallic var. eurotetrasporus. Our aim was to compare the behavior of the nuclei in the vegetative and reproductive cells of the three varieties with light microscopy (Feulgen and DAPI staining) and transmission electron microscopy. Most of the vegetative cells contained 3-5 nuclei in the three varieties. Nuclear migrations through the septum were detected. In the basidia relative locations of nuclei and vacuoles, meiotic spindle alignments, relative content of nuclear DNA and synaptonemal complexes were measured or observed. From the observation of numerous asynchronous second division of meiosis within basidia of var. bisporus and var. burnettii a new hypothesis emerges to explain the nonrandom distribution of the four meiotic products in the two spores of the bisporic basidia. Karyogamy and meiosis similarly occurred in the three varieties. In the case of A. bisporus var. eurotetrasporus this implies that the reproductive mode is sexual and therefore homothallic in the strict sense. The three different types of life cycles are described

Role of pharmacists in adherence in oncology patients

    No full text
Adherence is the degree to which the patient’s behaviour and actions correspond to the physician’s established treatment regimen regarding timing, dose and frequency. Patient counselling by both oncologists and pharmacists and optimization of the therapeutic regimen can critically impact decision-making and adherence to therapy. We performed a two-step study to identify factors influencing adherence to therapy from the perspective of oncology hospital pharmacists in Bulgaria. The results show that the major factors affecting anticancer therapy adherence are the manifestation of adverse drug reactions and distrust in therapy. These could be overcome with improved communication between patients, oncologists and pharmacists on therapy aspects and more active involvement of the hospital pharmacists in therapy monitoring with a main focus on identifying possible drug-related problems based on safety profile, drug-drug interactions and non-adherence

Association between endometrial microbiome and implantation success in women with frozen embryo transfer: results of a prospective cohort study

    No full text
AbstractThe aim of this prospective study was to compare the endometrial microbiome between pregnant and non-pregnant women after frozen embryo transfer (FET) with euploid embryos. Endometrial biopsies were collected from 30 women during the mid-luteal phase in a natural cycle. FET was performed with euploid embryos up to 3 months after the biopsy. Endometrial microbiota composition was analysed using 16S rRNA (v4-v5 region) next generation sequencing (NGS). The analysis of different clinical outcomes after the biopsy (no pregnancy (n = 14), and ultrasound confirmed pregnancy (n = 16)) revealed differences in the endometrial microbiome composition. In total, 271 distinct bacterial species and 668 bacterial genera were identified. The number of unique species found in non-pregnant women was 62 (22.88%), while in the patients who became pregnant after FET it was 39 (14.39%). Among them, bacteria with high frequency of occurrence such as Bacteroides spp., Cutibacterium granulosum, Isoptericola spp., Acetomicrobium spp., Marivivens spp. and Syntrophomonas spp. were found only in non-pregnant patients, while Bosea spp. was present only in pregnant women. The analysis of bacteria relative abundance revealed that Lactobacillus genus was not significantly different between the studied groups. In contrast, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus spp., Glutamicibacter spp. and Delftia spp. were significantly enriched in the non-pregnant group. In conclusion, specific bacteria taxa had higher relative abundance in the endometrium of patients with implantation failure after FET with euploid embryos. We hypothesize that an appropriate treatment for optimization of endometrial microbiome content in women with diagnosed microbiome dysbiosis could be beneficial for improvement of pregnancy rates

    No full text
Background: The issue of mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, entwined with citizens' rights and autonomy, impacts vaccine uptake and trust in health authorities. This study centers on Bulgaria, aiming to uncover attitudes towards obligatory COVID-19 vaccination. Methods: Employing an online questionnaire, we conducted a cross-sectional survey involving 1433 adults in Bulgaria between April and May 2022. Analysis of responses from 1200 participants illuminated perspectives on mandatory COVID-19 vaccination. Results: Among respondents, 38.6% supported or were uncertain about mandatory vaccination, while 61.4% opposed it. Binary logistic regression, utilizing demographic predictors, unveiled that younger age groups, particularly those aged 18–25, demonstrated diminished odds of supporting mandatory vaccination. Those with apprehensions about contracting the virus (OR 2.98, 95% CI 1.65–5.39), perceiving minimal vaccine risks (OR 3.86, 95% CI 1.80–8.26), acknowledging vaccine benefits for health protection (OR 3.86, 95% CI 1.80–8.26), and pandemic containment (OR 3.34, 95% CI 1.16–9.60) were more prone to endorse mandatory vaccination. Trust in general practitioners and pharmaceutical companies also emerged as influential factors. Conclusion: The study portrays a diverse sentiment within Bulgaria's population concerning compulsory COVID-19 vaccination. It underscores the importance of conveying accurate, evidence-based information while upholding individual autonomy. National health authorities should harmonize methodical vaccination initiatives with health promotion interventions targeted at the general population and healthcare professionals. Such an approach can facilitate well-informed choices and contribute to public health objectives
