    3D reconstruction of magnetization from dichroic soft X-ray transmission tomography

    The development of magnetic nanostructures for applications in spintronics requires methods capable of visualizing their magnetization. Soft X‐ray magnetic imaging combined with circular magnetic dichroism allows nanostructures up to 100–300 nm in thickness to be probed with resolutions of 20–40 nm. Here a new iterative tomographic reconstruction method to extract the three‐dimensional magnetization configuration from tomographic projections is presented. The vector field is reconstructed by using a modified algebraic reconstruction approach based on solving a set of linear equations in an iterative manner. The application of this method is illustrated with two examples (magnetic nano‐disc and micro‐square heterostructure) along with comparison of error in reconstructions, and convergence of the algorithm

    LAS CONDICIONES DEL ENTORNO EMPRENDEDOR Y EL DESARROLLO ECONÓMICO: UN ANÁLISIS DE LOS PAÍSES GEM

    En la línea de investigación que relaciona la actividad emprendedora con el desarrollo económico, este trabajo explora las relaciones entre el entorno emprendedor en los países GEM  (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) y su crecimiento económico según el Índice de Competitividad Global del WEF  (World Economic Forum) en cada fase de desarrollo. Para su realización se han utilizado los datos procedentes de la encuesta a los expertos (NES) del proyecto GEM de los 67 países que han participado en la edición de 2013. Los resultados obtenidos confirman la importancia del entorno emprendedor en la evolución de los países en sus etapas de desarrollo y la principal aportación es facilitar la categorización de los entornos emprendedores de los países utilizando las respuestas de los expertos del GEM en la identificación de facilitadores, obstáculos y recomendaciones de la actividad emprendedora. Además, la clasificación obtenida ha permitido establecer el patrón de condiciones del entorno de cada grupo de países según su etapa de desarrollo

On the other hand, immunotherapy involving T-cells is a promising modality of treatment for many neoplastic diseases including leukemias and lymphomas. The CD19/CD3-bispecific T-cell-engaging (BiTE ®) monoclonal antibody blinatumomab can transiently engage cytotoxic T-cells to CD19+ target B-cells inducing serial perforin-mediated lysis. In the first clinical trial, blinatumomab showed efficacy in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, but the most important trials have been conducted in relapsed/refractory (R/R) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and in ALL with minimal residual disease. Encouraging reports on the activity of blinatumomab in R/R Philadelphia chromosome-negative B-cell precursor ALL led to its approval by the US Food and Drug Administration on December 3, 2014 after an accelerated review process.     Dextran sulfate from Leuconostoc mesenteroides B512F exerts potent antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 in vitro and in vivo

Dextran sulfate (DS) polysaccharides have long demonstrated antiviral activity against different enveloped viruses in vitro. However, their poor bioavailability has led to their abandonment as antiviral candidates. Here, we report for the first time the broad-spectrum antiviral activity of a DS-based extrapolymeric substance produced by the lactic acid bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides B512F. Time of addition assays with SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses in in vitro models confirm the inhibitory activity of DSs in the early stages of viral infection (viral entry). In addition, this exopolysaccharide substance also reports broad-spectrum antiviral activity against several enveloped viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, HCoV229E, HSV-1, in in vitro models and in human lung tissue. The toxicity and antiviral capacity of DS from L. mesenteroides was tested in vivo in mouse models which are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The described DS, administered by inhalation, a new route of administration for these types of polymers, shows strong inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 infection in vivo, significantly reducing animal mortality and morbidity at non-toxic doses.     Cannabinoid pharmacology/therapeutics in chronic degenerative disorders affecting the central nervous system

    The endocannabinoid system (ECS) exerts a modulatory effect of important functions such as neurotransmission, glial activation, oxidative stress, or protein homeostasis. Dysregulation of these cellular processes is a common neuropathological hallmark in aging and in neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). The broad spectrum of actions of cannabinoids allows targeting different aspects of these multifactorial diseases. In this review, we examine the therapeutic potential of the ECS for the treatment of chronic neurodegenerative diseases of the CNS focusing on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. First, we describe the localization of the molecular components of the ECS and how they are altered under neurodegenerative conditions, either contributing to or protecting cells from degeneration. Second, we address recent advances in the modulation of the ECS using experimental models through different strategies including the direct targeting of cannabinoid receptors with agonists or antagonists, increasing the endocannabinoid tone by the inhibition of endocannabinoid hydrolysis, and activation of cannabinoid receptor-independent effects. Preclinical evidence indicates that cannabinoid pharmacology is complex but supports the therapeutic potential of targeting the ECS. Third, we review the clinical evidence and discuss the future perspectives on how to bridge human and animal studies to develop cannabinoid-based therapies for each neurodegenerative disorder. Finally, we summarize the most relevant opportunities of cannabinoid pharmacology related to each disease and the multiple unexplored pathways in cannabinoid pharmacology that could be useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases

    Essential oils from Argentinean native species reduce in vitro methane production

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Argentinean essential oils (EO) on methane production during in vitro fermentation compared to EO with proven effects as rumen fermentation modifiers. A complete randomized block design was used and the treatments included EO from Aloysia gratissima (50, 100, 150 and 300 mg/L), Eucalyptus globulus (5, 50, 150 and 300 mg/L), Lippia turbinata (30, 60, 120 and 240 mg/L), Mentha x piperita var. vulgaris (50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/L), Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum cv. Compacto (0.5, 5, 50 and 250 mg/L) and cv. Mendocino (50, 150, 250 and 350 mg/L), Rosmarinus officinalis (100, 300, 500 and 700 mg/L), Schinus molle (75, 150, 300 and 600 mg/L), Tagetes minuta (5, 50, 125 and 250 mg/L), and Thymus vulgaris (5, 50, 150 and 300 mg/L). Two controls were included: control (not containing EO) and monensin (1.87 mg/L). Variables measured were: digestibility of neutral detergent fiber, gas and methane production. Compared to the control, monensin reduced methane production by 44%, but with a 15% reduction in fiber digestibility. Except for E. globulus and L. turbinata, each variable measured was significantly reduced with the higher level of inclusion compared to the control, representing that overall microbial activity was affected. L. turbinata (60.8% limonene) reduced methane by half compared to control, and by 35 to 85% when compared to monensin, without affecting digestibility of the fiber. Some essential oils from native Argentinean plants exhibited great potential to reduce enteric methane production without affecting digestibility, of which L. turbinata was the most promising alternative.El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de aceites esenciales (AE) de plantas nativas de Argentina en la producción de metano durante la fermentación in vitro, en comparación con AE con efectos comprobados como modificadores de la fermentación ruminal. Se realizó un diseño en bloque completos al azar y los AE y dosis evaluados fueron: Aloysia gratissima (0,5, 5, 50 y 250 mg/L) , Eucalyptus globulus (5, 50, 150 y 300 mg/L), Lippia turbinata (30, 60, 120 y 240 mg/L), Mentha x piperita var. vulgaris (50, 100, 200 y 400 mg/L), Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum cv. Compacto (0,5, 5, 50 y 250 mg/L) y cv. Mendocino (50, 150, 250 y 350 mg/L), Rosmarinus officinalis (100, 300, 500 y 700 mg/L), Schinus molle (75, 150, 300 y 600 mg/L), Tagetes minuta (5, 50, 125 y 250 mg/L), y Thymus vulgaris (5, 50, 150 y 300 mg/L). Se incluyeron dos controles: control (sin AE) y monensina (1,87 mg/L). Las variables evaluadas fueron: digestibilidad in vitro de la fibra en detergente neutro, producción de gas y metano. En comparación al control, la monensina redujo la producción de metano en un 44%, pero con una reducción de un 15% en la digestibilidad de la fibra. Con excepción a E. globulus y L. turbinata, todas las variables fueron reducidas significativamente con el mayor nivel de inclusión comparado con el control, lo cual representa que la actividad microbiana se vio afectada. L. turbinata (60,8% limoneno) redujo la producción de metano a la mitad comparado al control, y entre un 35 y 85% en comparación a la monensina, sin que la digestibilidad de la fibra se vea afectada. Algunos aceites esenciales de plantas nativas de Argentina demostraron gran potencial para reducir la producción de metano entérico sin afectar la digestibilidad, de los cuales L. turbinata fue la alternativa más promisoria.EEA ManfrediFil: García, F.     Effectiveness of the parasitoid Anisopteromalus calandrae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) in the control of Sitophilus zeamais and Rhyzopertha dominica in paddy rice

    Rice is an important cereal crop in Spain that is frequently attacked by pests that cause significant quantitative and qualitative losses. Among them, the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, is the key pest, and the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica, is a serious pest found later in the season. The cosmopolitan ectoparasitoid, Anisopteromalus calandrae, which attacks late-instar larvae of coleopterans that develop inside grain kernels, has been reported as an efficient natural enemy. In this study, we evaluated whether the control efficacy of this parasitoid on S. zeamais was affected by the presence of the alternative host, R. dominica. Our laboratory experiment demonstrated the parasitoid preference for S. zeamais larvae when mixed with R. dominica larvae at different proportions. This preference for the maize weevil larvae allowed us to maintain a similar control efficacy of S. zeamais when it was offered alone than when it was offered together with R. dominica larvae. In our second experiment, done in 500 kg bags of paddy rice, similar results were obtained, since the presence of R. dominica larvae did not alter the control efficacy of A. calandrae on S. zeamais larvae.     Clinical and Emotional Factors Related to Erectile Dysfunction in HIV-Infected Men

The authors evaluated ED, clinical, and emotional variables in a group of 501 HIV-infected men in a cross-sectional 4-month observational study. ED was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function-5 and emotional status using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) questionnaire. Median age (interquartile range) was 42 (35, 48) years. Time since HIV diagnosis was 6.3 (2.6, 17.1) years, 92% were taking antiretroviral treatment and 81.8% had an HIV-RNA viral load <50 copies. The prevalence of ED was 58.5%. ED was mild in 30.1%, mild to moderate in 19.5%, moderate in 6.1%, and severe in 2.5%. ED medications were used by 19% of men. In the univariate analysis, the variables associated with all degrees of ED were older age, longer time since HIV diagnosis, higher scores in HAD, not taking efavirenz, taking etravirine, taking ritonavir, HIV/Hepatitis C Virus coinfection, and taking a protease inhibitor-containing regimen. For mild to moderate, moderate, and severe ED, the same variables were significant, as were lower nadir CD4 cell count, lower social support, taking atazanavir, concomitant conditions, and concomitant treatments. The variables that remained significant in the multivariate analyses, considering all degrees of ED or excluding mild ED were the following: older age and higher scores in HAD total. In summary, ED affected more than half of this cohort of well controlled HIV-infected men. Age and emotional status seemed to play a fundamental role in its presence

    Procedimiento para la gestión de la evaluación del desempeño de los profesores universitarios

    Objetivo: Elaborar un procedimiento para la gestión de la evaluación del desempeño de los profesores en la Universidad de Pinar del Rio, buscando una mayor correspondencia entre los resultados de las evaluaciones anuales y el cumplimiento de objetivos, indicadores y metas de la institución. Métodos: Para el desarrollo de la investigación se emplearon el método histórico - lógico, el de modelación así como el de medición, los que se aplicaron con ayuda de las técnicas de análisis documental, encuesta y entrevista y los procedimientos de análisis y síntesis e inducción y deducción, para el procesamiento y análisis de la información tanto bibliográfica como empírica. Resultados: Como resultado del diagnóstico empírico se identificaron en la Universidad de Pinar del Río un grupo de problemas entre los que se encuentran: que existe poca participación de los actores que deben involucrarse en el proceso, resulta una tarea tediosa para los evaluadores, se incumple el tiempo establecido, las evaluaciones no se corresponden con las categorías. Sobre esta base y la bibliografía consultada, se elaboró un procedimiento para efectuar la evaluación del desempeño anual de los profesores, fundamentando de forma científica sus &nbsp;cuatro fases, 10 etapas y 19 pasos donde se combina la autoevaluación, la hetero-evaluación y la co-evaluación. Conclusiones: Aunque existen numerosos procedimientos para la&nbsp; evaluación del desempeño de los profesores universitarios, no existe un consenso en la forma de evaluarlos, ni una única forma para hacerlo, por lo que cada universidad debe gestionar este proceso a través de procedimientos que posibiliten el desarrollo adecuado del mismo teniendo en cuenta sus características como organización y los objetivos trazados para el period

    Adaptation and validation of the PEDSQL™ oral health scale for toddlers in Chilean population

    The Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ (PedsQL™) Oral Health Scale was developed to measure oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The aim of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the parent-reported version for toddlers of PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale into Spanish and to assess the acceptability, reliability and validity of this version in Chilean preschool population. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale for toddlers was cross-culturally adapted for the Spanish language using the recommended standards. To assess metric properties, a cross-sectional study was carried out with 301 children aged 2 to 5 years in Carahue, Chile. Chilean versions of the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale, PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales, and Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) were completed by the children's parents. Dental caries, malocclusion and dental trauma were examined by trained dentists. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale was administrated a second time 14-21 days after. The reliability of the scale was verified by analysis of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and reproducibility (Intraclass correlation coefficient - ICC). The validity of the construct was assessed by confirmatory factor analysis and known groups method. The convergent validity was assessed by calculating the Spearman's correlation with the ECOHIS questionnaire. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale demonstrated good reliability, with Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.79 and ICC of 0.85. A moderate-to-strong correlation was found between the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale and the ECOHIS questionnaire (- 0.64); the PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale score was lower in children with poor than those with excellent/very good oral health (median 100 vs 85, p < 0.001); it also was lower in children with caries than in those caries-free (median 100 vs 90, p < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were found among groups according to malocclusion and traumatic dental injuries. The PedsQL™ Oral Health Scale for toddlers in Spanish showed to be equivalent to the original version, and its psychometric properties were satisfactory for application in a Chilean pre-school population
