Compatibility matters: Assessing the risks of built heritage cleaning

Today, heritage conservation is a discipline torn between the objectivity of its material questions and the subjectivity of its stakeholders and practitioners, inherent to the fact that conservation is, first and foremost, a cultural act. Most current conservation perspectives advise for (conservation) decisions to be based on the significance of the heritage object. Following this approach, different management tools have emerged to assist conservation at site, local, national and international levels. Quite the opposite, in what concerns interventions, conservation is still largely viewed as an objective material problem, and decision-support tools at this level are still mainly focused on performance assessments. An exception to this rule is the Eight-step Planning Model, complemented by the (In)compatibility Assessment Procedure, proposed by Delgado Rodrigues & Grossi, which attempts to bridge the gap between the macro and micro levels of heritage conservation planning. Compatibility has been gathering momentum as a conservation principle, but it has been mostly dealt with from a purely material perspective and is still insufficiently defined, especially in scopes beyond product testing. Borrowing from the aforementioned (In)compatibility Assessment, the research presented herein argues that compatibility is an adequate operative concept to assist decision making and guide conservation interventions. The key for using the principle of compatibility at this level of heritage conservation is to link it to the significance of the (conservation) object. This is demonstrated by proposing a procedure for the planning of built heritage cleaning based on the assessment of its risks towards significance; using risk analysis as a development tool, this procedure intends to frame the subjectivity of decision making in heritage cleaning. From this research, it follows that the principle of compatibility may constitute a valuable bridge between the objectivity and the subjectivity of heritage conservation

Reintegração pictórica das pinturas murais da Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, Loulé: escolhas técnicas

Given its impact on the perception of observers, the reintegration of lacunae in works of pictorial art is one of the most delicate and debated conservation-restoration actions. This text describes the methodology that guided the technical choices regarding the chromatic reintegration of the lacunae and the protective finishing of the mural surfaces in the Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Mercy) Hermitage, in Loulé. Additional reference is made to the way in which those choices/methodology articulated the symbolic and religious values of the hermitage paintings with the ethical and deontological principles of conservation-restoration. Although the type of intervention and its final outcome should always be discussed with the stakeholders, and eventual consultants, technical choices will necessarily be made by the conservator-restorer, who must therefore have training, experience and sensitivity adequate to the critical analysis required by this type of decision making

Obra publicada no âmbito do 6.º Colóquio de Expressão Múltipla, decorrido a 13 e 14 de Dezembro de 2022Foi apresentada em linha no dia 13 e 14 de dezembro de 2022 a sexta edição do Colóquio Expressão Múltipla: Teoria e Prática do Desenho. Esta edição é marcada por um desdobramento do colóquio em dois momentos distintos e complementares - o Colóquio Expressão Múltipla: Desenho Aplicado e o Colóquio Expressão Múltipla: teoria e prática do Desenho. Se o Colóquio Expressão Múltipla já se edificou enquanto plataforma para pensar a teoria e a prática do Desenho, surge agora a vertente do Desenho Aplicado. Importa referir que esta adição desponta em grande parte por uma direção tomada pelos alunos dos diversos ciclos de estudo do ensino superior, que os liga a secções do desenho próximas de áreas como o Desenho Digital, Banda Desenhada, Concept Art, Ilustração, Desenho em Realidade Virtual, Desenho de reconstrução, Desenho Científico, entre tantos outros tipos de Desenho Aplicado. Organizando-se agora no formato de número duplo, de modo a comportar dois números por ano, a revista digital Convocarte – Revista de Ciências da Arte mantém o mesmo propósito de promover o debate e edição de questões artísticas no espaço universitário, mantendo as coordenadas dominantes: convocar um número de especialistas em torno de um tema do mundo das artes, integrar trabalhos relevantes desenvolvidos nas fases curriculares e de projecto em mestrados e doutoramentos, sobretudo da FBAUL, e publicar trabalhos desenvolvidos em linhas de investigação do CIEBA. Assim, embora de funcionamento afecto à área científica de Ciências da Arte e do Património a Convocarte está aberta a outras especialidades interessadas em contribuir para a reflexão sobre as artes em geral, incorporando ensaios de predomínio teórico enraizado nos mais predominantes modos de discurso sobre arte, tais como História da arte, Crítica de Arte, Estética, Teorias da Arte ou Curadoria. (...) O nº2 organizou-se em torno de uma homenagem a uma figura importante das teorias da arte em Portugal, estratégia que Convocarte procurará manter nos próximos números. A intenção será deixar estudos sistematizados, entre o depoimento ou o ensaio, a memória e a reflexão, que estudem figuras marcantes da cultura portuguesa. (...) Neste número essa pasta foi dedicada a Rui Mário Gonçalves. Os textos são o resultado de uma sessão especial alargada a 2 de Maio no âmbito dos 2ºs Encontros com Críticos de Arte, com organização e coordenação de Fernando Rosa Dias, Cristina Tavares e Viviane Soares Silva, e decorridos ao longo das segundas do mês de Maio de 2016 na FBAUL (http://convocarte.belasartes.ulisboa.pt/index.php/2016/04/29/2o-encontros-com-criticos-de-arte/#more-325). Possible routes for Conservation and Restoration in the risk management of Built Heritage: public-private partnerships within R&D projects (Project STORM)

This text presents a reflection on the roles that conservator-restorers may play within the context of the disaster risk reduction efforts that Europe currently dedicates to Cultural Heritage assets. Besides discussing some aspects related to the contribution of the discipline proper to the disaster risk management of these assets, arguments are made for an increased engagement of the Conservation-Restoration private sector in research and development actions aimed at more integrated decision-making processes in the conservation of cultural property. Within this scope, the role and experience of Nova Conservação as one of the twenty partners of the Horizon 2020-funded project STORM are briefly reported
