    The business ecosystem approach applied to the industrial heritage management

    The purpose of our work is to deepen the knowledge about the Business Ecosystem approach and apply it to the management of Industrial Heritage (IH). Our approach comprises new organizational forms that do not easily fit with the traditional business models. The IH capitalization consists in the ability to tie the meaning and destiny of IH to contemporary processes of local development, in which the policies of reuse are contextualized in wider processes of socio-economic and territorial transformation. The processes of IH reuse and capitalization involve the activation of initiatives able to reinvent through creativeness and innovativeness those repositories of knowledge looking for new and sustainable purposes of utilization. This revitalization process involves economic, social and cultural transformations that require sophisticated management strategies. After a review of the literature, a case study is presented and analyzed to reflect on the stakeholders that compose the Industrial Heritage Business Ecosystem (IHBE) and their interrelated interactions. The analysis of the case reveals that an efficient project of IHBE relies on a system capable to link the creative idea, the organization and the business ecosystem in order to reach the market satisfaction; the IHBE success is related to the ability to co-evolve and valorize the actors involved in the project, generating a series of trust relationships primarily focused on the coproduction. Conclusions, theoretical and practical implications conclude the paper.El propósito de nuestro trabajo es profundizar en el conocimiento sobre el enfoque del ecosistema de negocios y aplicarlo en la gestión del patrimonio industrial (PI). Nuestro enfoque comprende nuevas formas de organización que no encajan fácilmente en los modelos tradicionales de negocios. La capitalización de IP consiste en la habilidad de vincular el significado y el destino del PI a los procesos contemporáneos de desarrollo local, en los que las políticas de reutilización son contextualizadas en amplios procesos de transformación socioeconómica y territorial. Los procesos de reutilización y capitalización de IP implican la activación de iniciativas capaces de reinventar a través de la creatividad y la innovación aquellos repositorios de conocimiento que buscan nuevos y sostenibles propósitos de utilización. Este proceso de revitalización incluye transformaciones económicas, sociales y culturales que requieren estrategias de gestión sofisticadas. Después de una revisión de la información, un caso de estudio es presentado y analizado para reflexionar en las partes interesadas que componen el Industrial Heritage Business Ecosystem (IHBE) y sus relaciones entre sí. El análisis del caso revela que un proyecto eficiente de IHBE se basa en un sistema capaz de vincular una idea creativa, la organización y el ecosistema empresarial para alcanzar la satisfacción en el mercado; el éxito de IHBE se relaciona con la habilidad de coevolución y valorización de las partes involucradas en este proyecto, generando una serie de relaciones de confianza centradas principalmente en la coproducción.     Cosmic ray oriented performance studies for the JEM-EUSO first level trigger

    JEM-EUSO is a space mission designed to investigate Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos (E > 5 ⋅ 1019 eV) from the International Space Station (ISS). Looking down from above its wide angle telescope is able to observe their air showers and collect such data from a very wide area. Highly specific trigger algorithms are needed to drastically reduce the data load in the presence of both atmospheric and human activity related background light, yet retain the rare cosmic ray events recorded in the telescope. We report the performance in offline testing of the first level trigger algorithm on data from JEM-EUSO prototypes and laboratory measurements observing different light sources: data taken during a high altitude balloon flight over Canada, laser pulses observed from the ground traversing the real atmosphere, and model landscapes reproducing realistic aspect ratios and light conditions as would be seen from the ISS itself. The first level trigger logic successfully kept the trigger rate within the permissible bounds when challenged with artificially produced as well as naturally encountered night sky background fluctuations and while retaining events with general air-shower characteristics

    Il presente contributo analizza l’IHM inteso come nuovo modo per generare sviluppo turistico, sociale e territoriale, basato sul recupero, la gestione e la valorizzazione del patrimonio industriale. La letteratura in merito, pur evidenziando un accresciuto interesse, si presenta piuttosto disarticolata e senza tentativi di sintesi relativi agli aspetti salienti e alle principali questioni ad esso collegate. Al fine di comprendere meglio il fenomeno e tentare di fornire un contributo al dibattito accademico, è stata svolta una meta analysis conducendo una specifica review su riviste internazionali di lingua inglese con lo scopo di esplorare il concetto dell’IHM e valutare lo state of the art in letteratura. La revisione di quest’ultima ha determinato interessanti risultati sia in generale, sia in riferimento agli aspetti più propriamente manageriali. Le conclusioni, infine, offrono alcuni spunti di riflessione e possibili implicazioni per il contesto italiano. This paper analyzes the IHM interpreted as a new way to generate touristic, social and territorial development, based on the recovery, management and valorization of the industrial heritage. The literature on the subject, although showing an increased interest, appears disarticulated and without a clear understanding of the main aspects and issues related to it. In order to better understand the phenomenon and try to make a contribution to the academic debate, it has been conducted a meta-analysis through a specific review of international journals in English language, with the aim to explore the IHM concept and assess the state of the art in literature. The literature review determined interesting results both in general and also in relation to the managerial issues. Conclusions offer some highlights useful to deepen the knowledge of specific implications for the Italian context

    MANAGING A COMPLEX ADAPTIVE ECOSYSTEM: TOWARDS A SMART MANAGEMENT OF INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE TOURISM

    This paper is focused on the concept of business ecosystem, which is a relatively new field in management research. Furthermore, there is a second emerging research approach in social sciences named “complexity theory” that considers ecosystems, and business ecosystems, as complex adaptive systems. The main aim is to connect both by bringing new insights under the basis of a smart vision of tourism. In particular, we propose a theoretical discussion of the aforementioned concepts by applying them to the specific context of Industrial Heritage Management. The Industrial Heritage (i.e.: mining sites, old infrastructures, museums and historic places related to industry…) is chosen because it appears well representative: it is characterized by a complex and dynamic structure which consists of an interconnected population of stakeholders and several tangible and intangible resources to recover, organize and then manage. It follows that the management of this ecosystem should take into account many factors simultaneously. Based also on the emergent initiative of Smart Tourism, a conceptual model is presented, in which each component is explained and the focal complexity aspects appearing in this business ecosystem are highlighted. We conclude with a set of propositions for recommending new paths for future studies
