La conoscenza di architettura, città e paesaggio: "Il Progetto Logico di Rilievo" in una sperimentazione metodologica
Non si parla come si pensa, ma si pensa come si parla: ciò induce a dire che come il flusso del pensiero segue la sintassi della lingua madre, così il pensiero formale, sia esso interpretativo o propositivo, segue l'impianto geometrico. La Geometria è di fatto un sistema assiomatico che, se modernamente lo si è compreso come puramente formale, nella realtà dei comuni mortali nasce e rimane materiale: un vero "a priori" kantiano. Ora, le ragioni del "volere geometrico" che pervade la vita delle civiltà può avere svariate ragioni che scomodano svariate discipline: a noi può bastare la duplice considerazione che vede la Geometria tanto come mezzo per giustificare scelte formali attraverso sicure relazioni tra entità, quanto il filo logico che rende comprensibile e comunicabile una idea anche di pura fantasia. Il nostro contributo intende dimostrare, quanto sia utile ancora e sempre, dalla tradizione alla contemporaneità, la conoscenza della Geometria nelle sue varie forme. You do not speak as you think, but you think as you speak: this means that as the flow of thought follows our language syntax, so the formal thinking, whether purposeful or interpretational, follows the geometric layout. Geometry is an axiomatic system that, if modernly it is purely formal, in ordinary life remains material: a true Kantian "a priori". Geometry pervades the civilized people's life; we can take into consideration two aspects: firstly, the Geometry justify formal choices through fixed relationships between entities; secondly, Geometry makes understandable and communicable ideas. Memory performances and personality traits in mothers of children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
Background: Chronic diseases in pediatric age have been identified as stressful risk factors
for parents. Studies on caregivers have documented the impact of chronic parenting stress on
emotion and cognition.
Aim: To investigate the differences between a group of mothers of children affected by
obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) for at least 4 years and a group of mothers of
typically developing children (TDC) in relation to parental stress, self-esteem, locus of
control, and memory performances.
Methods: A group of 86 mothers (mean age 35.6±4.9, ranged between 32 and 41 years) of
children with OSAS diagnosis, and a group of 52 mothers of TDC (mean age 35.9±4.2,
ranged between 32 and 41 years) participated in the study. All participants were administered
stress level, global self-esteem, internal/external locus of control scales, and memory
assessment.
Results: Mothers of OSAS children, compared to mothers of TDC, had a significantly
higher level of stress, lower self-esteem, more external locus of control and poorer memory
performance.
Conclusions: The child respiratory disease, with its sudden and unpredictable features,
appeared as a significant source of stress for the mother. Such stress condition may have an
impact on mothers’ personality traits (self-esteem, locus of control) and on their memory
performances. The data have suggested a need for psychological support programs for
mothers to better manage stress associated with children’s respiratory disease
Field trip to the Ischia resurgent caldera, a journey across an active volcano in the Gulf of Naples
Ischia is one of the most impressive examples of post-caldera resurgence in the world, with its almost 1,000 m of uplift in less than 30 ka. This three-days field trip will lead the participants through the geological and volcanological history of the island, illustrating the volcanic and related hazardous phenomena threatening about 50,000 inhabitants. Effusive and explosive eruptions, catastrophic earthquakes and huge debris-avalanches struck the island that, since Neolithic times, experienced a complex history of alternating human colonization and natural disasters. The field trip consists of three routes: 1) the circumnavigation of the island, aimed to outline its main volcanological, geomorphological and tectonic features and to observe the oldest volcanic rocks exposed, stimulating discussions about coastal evolution and the relationships between volcanism, volcano-tectonism and slope instability; 2) an onland excursion on peculiar aspects of the products related to Ischia more recent period of volcanic activity; 3) a route focusing on the Mt. Epomeo Green Tuff caldera forming eruptions (55-60 ka), encouraging a discussion on the dynamics of the intracalderic resurgence and the geomorphological evolution of the Mt. Epomeo slopes, with ongoing Mass Rock Creep (MRC) processes culminating in rockavalanche, debris-avalanche and lahar deposits
Echocardiographic nomograms for chamber diameters and areas in Caucasian children
BACKGROUND: Although a quantitative evaluation of cardiac chamber dimensions in pediatric echocardiography is often important, nomograms for these structures are limited. The aim of this study was to establish reliable echocardiographic nomograms of cardiac chamber diameters and areas in a wide population of children. METHODS: A total of 1,091 Caucasian Italian healthy children (age range, 0 days to 17 years; 44.8% female) with body surface areas (BSAs) ranging from 0.12 to 1.8 m(2) were prospectively enrolled. Twenty-two two-dimensional and M-mode measurements of atrial and ventricular chamber diameters and areas were performed. Models using linear, logarithmic, exponential, and square-root relationships were tested. Heteroscedasticity was tested by the White test and the Breusch-Pagan test. Age, weight, height, and BSA, calculated by the Haycock formula, were used as the independent variables in different analyses to predict the mean value of each echocardiographic measurement. The influence of various confounders, including gender, type of delivery, prematurity, and interobserver variability, was also evaluated. Structured Z scores were then computed. RESULTS: The Haycock formula provided the best fit and was used when presenting data as predicted values (mean ? 2 SDs) for a given BSA and within equations relating echocardiographic measurements to BSA. Confounders were not included in the final models, because they did not show significant effects for most of the measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Echocardiographic reference values are presented for chamber area and diameters, derived from a large population of healthy children. These data partly cover a gap in actual pediatric echocardiographic nomograms. Further studies are required to reinforce these data, as well as to evaluate other parameters and ethnicities
Instanton effects in N=1 brane models and the Kahler metric of twisted matter
We consider locally consistent systems of magnetized D9 branes on an
orbifolded six-torus which support N=1 gauge theories. In such realizations,
the matter multiplets arise from "twisted" strings connecting different stacks
of branes. The introduction of Euclidean 5 branes (E5) wrapped on the
six-dimensional compact space leads to instanton effects. For instance, if the
system is engineered so as to yield SQCD, a single E5 brane may account for the
ADS/TVY superpotential. We discuss the subtle interplay that exists between the
annuli diagrams with an E5 boundary and the holomorphicity properties of the
effective low-energy action of the N=1 theory. The consistency of this picture
allows to obtain information on the Kahler metric of the chiral matter

Assessing parental traits affecting children's food habits: an analysis of the determinants of responsible consumption
Abstract Over the last decades, economic, social, and environmental changes have profoundly affected citizen-consumer's lifestyle and food habits. Current food habits encourage people either to eat more outside home or to a massive use of convenience foods. The consequence is the increasing rate of overweight and obesity through the population and in particular among children. The resulting social and environmental costs are huge. Indeed, it increases government health expenditure as well as environmental pollution due to the large amount of water, fertilizers, and chemicals involved in the production process. The study focuses on these issues aiming at uncovering the aspects able to encourage healthier and more responsible food habits. Specifically, it explores the effects of different parental characteristics on children's food habits and lifestyle. The study findings reveal a positive effect of parental socio-demographic characteristics (i.e., education and occupation), diet awareness, and lifestyle on children's food habits and lifestyle, offering practical insights for regulators on how to promote healthier and more sustainable food habits among children
Efficacy and safety of rosuvastatin in the management of dyslipidemia
Rosuvastatin is a synthetic statin that represents an advance in the pharmacologic and clinical properties of statins. Relative to other statins, rosuvastatin possesses a greater number of binding interactions with HMG-CoA reductase and has a high affinity for the active site of the enzyme. As with other statins, serious adverse effects with rosuvastatin therapy are uncommon and primarily involve effects on the liver and skeletal muscle. The risk increases with increasing dosages and coadministration with other drugs interacting with the same metabolic pathway. The degree of LDL reduction is important to achieve the treatment goals suggested by international guidelines. Among the most potent statins, rosuvastatin is capable of getting the majority of patients to their LDL cholesterol goals. In addition, rosuvastatin has been found effective in reducing small-dense LDL, C-reactive protein and in increasing HDL cholesterol levels. Controlled clinical trials using vascular end-points have been performed. In particular, a study demonstrated that rosuvastatin therapy could slow progression and/or cause regression of carotid intima-media thickness over 2 years in middle-aged individuals with a low Framingham risk score (FRS) and mild to moderate subclinical atherosclerosis. A primary prevention study (JUPITER) was stopped before the programmed end of the study, because of excess benefit for high-risk individuals receiving rosuvastatin treatment. It is suggested that pronounced LDL reduction, in association with significant HDL cholesterol increase, are the bases of a marked preventive action of rosuvastatin. The results from JUPITER support the use of rosuvastatin for primary cardiovascular prevention, in overweight men and women, with near to normal LDL cholesterol and high CRP. There is now evidence of benefit from rosuvastatin treatment for a wide segment of the general population at intermediate cardiovascular risk. In absolute numbers, this segment represents the main source of cardiovascular events: on the basis of JUPITER results, it is expected that treatment target and potential candidates to statin therapy will be revaluated and redefined
Measuring consumers' preferences for craft beer attributes through Best-Worst Scaling
Abstract The current paper investigates consumers' consumption behavior and preferences for craft beer. More specifically, it uncovers consumers' consumption habits and perception about craft beer, as well as their preferences for 13 beer attributes drawn from the literature. The analysis was carried out in Italy by administering a structured questionnaire to 323 consumers. Best-Worst Scaling was used to detect consumers' preferences towards the 13 craft beer attributes. The latter were then ranked on the basis of their best-worst scores to identify the level of importance Italian consumers assign to the different attributes. The study findings reveal that Italian craft beer consumers are young, well-educated, and employed. They drink craft beer more than once per month, mainly in pub and with friends and colleagues. Craft beer is perceived with higher quality and different flavors, while compared with a commercial beer, it results tastier, more genuine, and natural. As for the beer attributes, Italians prefer taste, fermentation process, and color, while store promotion, brand, and price rank as the least important. The study findings offer several implications for brewers and marketers involved in the beer sector. Based on the preferences detected, breweries should adapt their product offer to meet craft beer consumers' expectations
Electron/pion separation with an Emulsion Cloud Chamber by using a Neural Network
We have studied the performance of a new algorithm for electron/pion
separation in an Emulsion Cloud Chamber (ECC) made of lead and nuclear emulsion
films. The software for separation consists of two parts: a shower
reconstruction algorithm and a Neural Network that assigns to each
reconstructed shower the probability to be an electron or a pion. The
performance has been studied for the ECC of the OPERA experiment [1].
The separation algorithm has been optimized by using a detailed Monte
Carlo simulation of the ECC and tested on real data taken at CERN (pion beams)
and at DESY (electron beams). The algorithm allows to achieve a 90% electron
identification efficiency with a pion misidentification smaller than 1% for
energies higher than 2 GeV
BLIND: a set of semantic feature norms from the congenitally blind
Feature-based descriptions of concepts produced
by subjects in a property generation task are widely used in
cognitive science to develop empirically grounded concept
representations and to study systematic trends in such repre-
sentations. This article introduces BLIND, a collection of
parallel semantic norms collected from a group of congenital-
ly blind Italian subjects and comparable sighted subjects. The
BLIND norms comprise descriptions of 50 nouns and 20
verbs. All the materials have been semantically annotated
and translated into English, to make them easily accessible
to the scientific community. The article also presents a pre-
liminary analysis of the BLIND data that highlights both the
large degree of overlap between the groups and interesting
