    Management of the Class III malocclusion treated with maxillary expansion, facemask therapy and corrective orthodontic. A 15-year follow-up

    The facial growth of Class III malocclusion worsens with age, in this case, the early orthopedic treatment, providing facial balance, modifying the maxillofacial growth and development. A 7.6-year old boy presented with Class III malocclusion associated with anterior crossbite; the mandible was shifted to the right and the maxilla had a transversal deficiency. Rapid maxillary expansion followed by facemask therapy was performed, to correct the anteroposterior relationship and improve the facial profile. The patient was followed for a 15-year period, after completion of the treatment, and stability was observed. Growing patients should be monitored following their treatment, so as to prevent malocclusion relapse

    A multidisciplinary treatment of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors: a 14-year follow-up case report

    Absence of the maxillary lateral incisor creates an aesthetic problem which can be managed in various ways. The condition requires careful treatment planning and consideration of the options and outcomes following either space closure or prosthetic replacement. Recent developments in restorative dentistry have warranted a re-evaluation of the approach to this clinical situation. Factors relating both to the patient and the teeth, including the presentation of malocclusion and the effect on the occlusion must be considered. The objective of this study was to describe the etiology, prevalence and alternative treatment modalities for dental agenesis and to present a clinical case of agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisors treated by the closure of excessive spaces and canine re-anatomization. A clinical case is presented to illustrate the interdisciplinary approach between orthodontics and restorative dentistry for improved esthetic results. In this report, the treatment of a girl with a Class II malocclusion of molars and canines with missing maxillary lateral incisors and convex facial profile is shown. Treatment was successfully achieved and included the space closure of the areas corresponding to the missing upper lateral incisors, through movement of the canines and the posterior teeth to mesial by fixed appliances as well as the canines transformation in the maxillary lateral incisors. This is a 14-year follow-up case report involving orthodontics and restorative dentistry in which pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term follow-up records for the patient are presented

    An institution that has a portfolio of intangible assets of intellectual property products may, through business planning and management, use it as a way to establish contracts and transfer technology to other organizations, enabling financial returns and partnerships. The present study proposes the creation of a technological showcase for the dissemination of the institution\u27s technology assets using the Open Journal System - OJS platform . The survey of intellectual property assets was carried out through prospecting in the Databases of the National Institute of Intellectual Property (INPI). The qualification of the technological showcases was carried out through the information present on the websites of 41 institutions of the Federal Network of Vocational and Technological Education.     Evaluation of the stability of open bite treatment using a removable appliance with palatal crib combined with high-pull chincup

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to cephalometrically analyze the stability of dentoalveolar and skeletal changes produced by a removable appliance with palatal crib associated to high-pull chincup in individuals with anterior open bite treated for 12 months, and compare them to individuals with similar malocclusion and age, not submitted to orthodontic treatment, also followed for the same period. METHODS: Nineteen children with a mean age of 9.78 years old treated for 12 months with a removable appliance with palatal crib associated with chincup therapy were evaluated after 15 months (post-treatment period) and compared with a control group of 19 subjects with mean age of 9.10 years with the same malocclusion that was followed-up for the same period. Seventy-six lateral cephalograms were evaluated at T1 (after correction) and T2 (follow-up) and cephalometric variables were analyzed by statistical tests. RESULTS: The results did not show significant skeletal, soft tissue or maxillary dentoalveolar changes. Overall, treatment effects on the experimental group were maintained at T2 evaluation with an increase of 0.56 mm in overbite. Overjet and maxillary incisors/molars position (vertical and sagittal) remained essentially unchanged during the study period. Only mandibular incisors showed significant changes (labial inclination and protrusion) compared to control group. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, it can be concluded that the early open bite treatment with a removable appliance and palatal crib associated with high-pull chincup therapy provided stability of 95%

    Ozone saturation in a column containing peanut kernels and the effect on quality

    Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o processo de saturação do ozônio em coluna contendo amendoim e o efeito na qualidade de produto. Utilizaram-se grãos com teor de umidade em torno de 6,8% (b.u.), acondicionados em recipientes cilíndricos de PVC, com 1,10 m de altura e 15 cm de diâmetro. O gás, nas concentrações de 1,59 e 2,78 mg L–1, foi injetado na base da coluna e os valores adotados de altura da coluna de grãos foram de 0,25, 0,50 e 0,75 m. Determinaram-se os tempos e as concentrações de saturação e avaliou-se a qualidade dos grãos ozonizados. Para os grãos ozonizados na concentração de 1,59 mg L–1, obteve-se tempo de saturação na faixa entre 222 e 449 min. No que tange à relação CSat/C0, obtiveram-se valores entre 0,32 e 0,48. Com relação aos grãos submetidos à ozonização na concentração de 2,78 mg L–1, obteve-se tempo de saturação na faixa entre 78 e 251 min. No que se refere à relação CSat/C0, para a concentração inicial de 2,78 mg L–1, os valores permaneceram entre 0,46 e 0,81. É possível concluir, a partir dos resultados obtidos, que, à medida que se aumenta a altura da coluna de grãos de amendoim, há aumento do tempo de saturação e decréscimo da concentração de saturação. Não houve alteração na qualidade do produto durante o processo de ozonização.The objective of this study was to evaluate the ozone saturation process in a column containing peanuts and the effect on product quality. Peanuts with a moisture content of about 6.8% (w.b.) were used, packed in cylindrical PVC containers with 1.10 m in height and 15 cm in diameter. Ozone was injected into the base of the cylindrical column and the corresponding values adopted for the heights of the grain columns were 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 m. The peanuts were ozonized at concentrations of 1.59 and 2.78 mg L–1, a temperature of 25 °C and a gas flow rate of 5.0 L min–1. The ozone saturation times and concentrations were determined and also the quality of the ozonized peanuts. For peanut kernels ozonated at a concentration of 1.59 mg L–1, saturation times ranging between 222 and 449 min were obtained. Regarding the CSat/C0 ratio, values ​​between 0.32 and 0.48 were obtained. For peanut kernels ozonated at a concentration of 2.78 mg L–1, saturation times between 78 and 251 min were obtained, and the CSat/C0 ratio for an initial concentration of 2.78 mg L-1 was between 0.46 and 0.81. It was concluded from the results that an increase in height of the peanut kernel column resulted in an increased saturation time and decreased saturation concentration. There was no change in product quality during the ozonation process

    Comparison of manual, digital and lateral CBCT cephalometric analyses

    Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the reliability of three different methods of cephalometric analysis. Material and Methods: Conventional pretreatment lateral cephalograms and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans from 50 subjects from a radiological clinic were selected in order to test the three methods: manual tracings (MT), digitized lateral cephalograms (DLC), and lateral cephalograms from CBCT (LC-CBCT). The lateral cephalograms were manually analyzed through the Dolphin Imaging 11.0â„¢ software. Twenty measurements were performed under the same conditions, and retraced after a 30-day period. Paired t tests and the Dahlberg formula were used to evaluate the intra-examiner errors. The Pearson's correlation coefficient and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were used to compare the differences between the methods. Results: Intra-examiner reliability occurred for all methods for most of the measurements. Only six measurements were different between the methods and an agreement was observed in the analyses among the 3 methods. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that all evaluated methodologies are reliable and valid for scientific research, however, the method used in the lateral cephalograms from the CBCT proved the most reliable

    Atmospheric natural disasters can have their damage mitigated if meteorological alerts are disseminated on time Among the ways to get data related to weather conditions are the use of atmospheric profilers and numerical models Such resources can be used for studies related to the surface layer which covers a range from 20 to 200 meters below the low troposphere In order to make atmospheric experiments achievable without great financial expenditure a low-cost atmospheric profiler was developed together with the Laboratory of Monitoring and Numerical Modeling of Climate Systems LAMMOC of the Federal Fluminense University UFF to be on board a drone and based on prototyping with Arduino which had as sensors the DHT22 for measuring temperature and relative humidity and the BMP280 for measuring atmospheric pressure Thus this profiler was used in an experiment from which atmospheric vertical profiles were generated and compared with profiles generated by the numerical model Weather Research and Forecasting WRF and post-processed by the WRF-Python routines package As a result it was noticed that the observed data profiles described a behavior of the surface layer that indicates the occurrence of thermal inversion and change of regime of this layer from the stable passing through the neutral to the unstable With this it is evaluated that the method of using this profiler can be applied in several atmospheric studies such as atmospheric pollution and nowcasting weather forecast as well as its potential for use in areas such as operational meteorology and assimilation of data from numerical models shows to be promisin

    Tomographic evaluation of dentoskeletal effects of rapid maxillary expansion using Haas and Hyrax palatal expanders in children : a randomized clinical trial

    Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a usual procedure for correcting the transversal maxillary deficiency. Among the most used appliances are the Haas type (tooth-tissue-borne) and Hyrax (tooth-borne) whose main difference is the design. This study aimed to evaluate the dentoskeletal effects of RME using two different expanders in children. The sample was composed of 42 children of both gender presenting unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite with mean age 9.49 (SD± 1.35). Patients were randomized into two groups according to the type of expander: Hyrax (n= 21, 9 boys and 12 girls) and Haas (n= 21, 11 boys and 10 girls). Multiplanar coronal and axial slices obtained from cone-beam computed tomography images (i-Cat, Hartsfield, PA, USA) were used at pretreatment (T1) and after 6 months when the expander was removed (T2). Measurements were performed on Dolphin Imaging Systems 11.7 software (Chatsworth, California, USA). The following variables were evaluated: inclinations of the posterior teeth, transverse skeletal widths, length of maxillary dental arch, buccal bone thickness and level of buccal alveolar crest. Statistical analysis performed using chi-squared test to compare the sex ratios between groups and independent t test with the Bonferroni correction for multiple tests. RME increased all maxillary transverse dimensions, regardless of the type of expanders used. Subjects in the Hyrax group experienced significantly increase in the lingual bone thickness (0.94 mm) compare to Haas group (0.21 mm). The Hyrax-type expander produced greater increase in the lingual bone thickness than did the Haas-type expander, but this effect might not be clinically significant. Both appliances presented similar transversal gain and tended to produce similar orthopedic and orthodontic effects
