Long time localization of modified surface quasi-geostrophic equations

We discuss the time evolution of a two-dimensional active scalar flow, which extends some properties valid for a two-dimensional incompressible nonviscous fluid. In particular we study some characteristics of the dynamics when the field is initially concentrated in NN small disjoint regions, and we discuss the conservation in time of this localization property. We discuss also how long this localization persists, showing that in some cases this happens for quite long times

Radical Prostatectomy and Intraoperative Radiation Therapy in High-Risk Prostate Cancer

Intraoperative electron beam radiotherapy (IOERT) for prostate cancer (PC) is a radiotherapeutic technique, giving high doses of radiation during radical prostatectomy (RP). This paper presents the published treatment approaches for intraoperative radiotherapy analyzing functional outcome, morbidity, and oncological outcome in patients with clinical intermediate-high-risk prostate cancer. A systematic review of the literature was performed, searching PubMed and Web of Science. A “free text” protocol using the term intraoperative radiotherapy and prostate cancer was applied. Ten records were retrieved and analyzed including more than 150 prostate cancer patients treated with IOERT. IOERT represents a feasible technique with acceptable surgical time and minimal toxicity. A greater number of cases and longer follow-up time are needed in order to assess the long-term side effects and oncological outcome

Somatic muscolature of Tardigrada: phylogenetic signal and metameric patterns

Although studies describing molecular-based phylogenies within tardigrades are now frequently being published, this is not the case for studies combining molecular and morphological characters. Tardigrade phylogeny is still based, from a morphological point of view, almost exclusively on chitinous structures and little attention has been given to detecting and using novel morphological data. Consequently, we analysed the musculature of seven tardigrade species belonging to the main phyletic lines by confocal laser scanning microscopy and compared these morphological results with new molecular analyses (18S+28S rRNA genes). Finally, we analysed all the data with a total evidence approach. A consilience in the phylogenetic relationships among orders and superfamilies of tardigrades was obtained among the evolutionary trees obtained from morphological, molecular and total evidence approaches. Comparative analysis on the musculature allowed the identification of serial homologies and repeated metameric patterns along the longitudinal animal body axis. A phenomenon of mosaic evolution was detected in musculature anatomy, as dorsal musculature was found to be highly modified with respect to the other body muscle groups, probably related to the evolution of dorsal cuticular plates. An understanding of tardigrade musculature anatomy will give fundamental information to understand the evolution of segmental pattern within Panarthropoda

OBJECTIVE:To assess asthma patients in Brazil in terms of the level of asthma control, compliance with maintenance treatment, and the use of rescue medication.METHODS:We used data from a Latin American survey of a total of 400 asthma patients in four Brazilian state capitals, all of whom completed a questionnaire regarding asthma control and treatment.RESULTS:In that sample, the prevalence of asthma was 8.8%. Among the 400 patients studied, asthma was classified, in accordance with the Global Initiative for Asthma criteria, as controlled, partially controlled, and uncontrolled in 37 (9.3%), 226 (56.5%), and 137 (34.3%), respectively. In those three groups, the proportion of patients on maintenance therapy in the past four weeks was 5.4%, 19.9%, and 41.6%, respectively. The use of rescue medication was significantly more common in the uncontrolled asthma group (86.9%; p < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS:Our findings suggest that, in accordance with the established international criteria, asthma is uncontrolled in the vast majority of asthma patients in Brazil. Federal University of São Paulo Paulista School of MedicineMerck, Sharp & Dohme Corp.UNIFESP, EPMSciEL

_________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT: The effect of the Aqueous Extract from the leaves of Erythrina vellutina (AE) on rat vas deferens preparation was evaluated in this work. The AE inhibited the muscle contractions induced by electrical field stimulation (EFS) in a concentration-dependent manner. This inhibition was not affected by atropine (10-5M), propanolol (10-5M), prazosin (10-5M) or yohimbine (10-5M), suggesting that there is no direct interaction of the AE with cholinergic nor adrenergic receptors. Incubation of vas deferens with the K+ channel antagonists, tetraethylamonium (10-6M) or 4-aminopyridine (10-6M) had also no effect on the AE-induced inhibition. On the other hand, glibenclamide (10-6) significantly attenuated the effect of the AE, suggesting a possible involvement of ATP-dependent K+ channels. The AE (0.15 mg/mL) did not alter the contractions induced by noradrenaline (10-5M), ATP (10-4M) nor KCl (80 mM), against an interaction of the extract with post-synaptic sites. The data presented suggests that the inhibition of the electrically driven muscle twitches by the AE could be due to a pre-synaptic interaction of the extract with ATP-dependent K+ channels from vas deferens sympathetic neurons

Comparative Proteomic Analyses Between Biofilm-Forming and Non-biofilm-Forming Strains of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Isolated From Goats

Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) is a chronic disease that affects small ruminants and causes economic losses in the associated breeding system. The causative agent of CLA is Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, a Gram-positive bacterium that exhibits tropism for external and internal lymph nodes and induces abscess formation in the host. Bacterial communities often produce a biofilm matrix that serves various functions, including protection against hostile environmental conditions, antibiotics, and the host immune response. Although biofilm formation has been reported for C. pseudotuberculosis, not all strains demonstrate this property in culture. In this work, we report the first comparative proteomic analysis of one biofilm-forming (CAPJ4) and one biofilm-non-forming strain (CAP3W) of C. pseudotuberculosis isolated from goats. Bacterial whole cell protein extracts were obtained for mass spectrometry analyses. Using LC-MS/MS, our studies reveal three and four proteins exclusively found in the CAPJ4 and CAP3W proteome, respectively. In addition, label-free quantitative analysis identified 40 proteins showing at-least 2-fold higher values in CAPJ4 compared CAP3W proteome Notably, CAPJ4 differentially synthesized the penicillin-binding protein, which participates in the formation of peptidoglycans. CAPJ4 also exhibited upregulation of N-acetylmuramoyl-L-alanine amidase and galactose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase, which are involved in biofilm formation and exopolysaccharide biosynthesis. Here, we demonstrate that biofilm formation in C. pseudotuberculosis is likely associated with specific proteins, some of which were previously shown to be associated with virulence and biofilm formation in other organisms. Our findings may drive studies related to the bacterial mechanisms involved in the biofilm formation, in addition to providing targets for the treatment of CLA.Fil: Sá, Maria Conceição Aquino de. Background: There are lesions that are still being missed in colonoscopy. Many of those could be superficially elevated serrated lesions or depressed ones. Aim: Compare the histopathological characteristics of these lesions and their risks for submucosal carcinoma. Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional and observational study comparing 217 superficially elevated serrated lesions larger than 5 mm resected by colonoscopies (G1) with 558 depressed lesions (G2). Results: In G1, 217 lesions were found in 12653 colonoscopies (1,7%); in G2, 558 lesions in 36174 colonoscopies (1.5%). In G1 there were 63.4% of women and in G2 no gender predominance. Average size was G1 with 16.2 mm and G2 with 9.2 mm (p<0.001). G1 predominated on the proximal colon and G2 on the distal and rectum (p<0.001). In G1 there were 214 low-grade intramucosal neoplasia (98,6%) and three high grade intramucosal neoplasia (1,4%). Excluding 126 hyperplastic polyps and considering 91 sessile serrated adenomas in G1, was observed 88 (96.7%) with low-grade intramucosal neoplasia and three (3.3%) high-grade intramucosal neoplasia; in G2, 417 low-grade intramucosal neoplasia (74,7%), 113 high-grade intramucosal neoplasia (20,3%) and 28 (5,0%) submucosal adenocarcinomas (p<0.001). Conclusion: Depressed lesions significantly had more high-grade intramucosal neoplasia and more invasive carcinomas for the submucosal layer than superficially elevated serrated lesions and more than superficially elevated sessile serrated adenomas. G1 predominaram no cólon proximal e G2, no distal e reto (p<0,001).

Energy poverty is a phenomenon of increasing importance at both European and national level. Despite this growing interest, in Italy there is not a shared definition of energy poverty even if there exist various public interventions to alleviate or reduce this problem (for instance the so-called bonus gas). There is also a lack of quantitative studies, especially at regional level. In this contribution, starting from an original database, we will specify a multilevel model to estimate the energy poverty incidence and evolution across the areas of the city of Trieste
