In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of vascular flora alien to Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, exclusions, and status changes for Italy or for Italian administrative regions. Nomenclatural and distribution updates published elsewhere are provided as Suppl. material 1

The human dimension of the conflict between fishermen and South American sea lions in southern Brazil

    No full text
We analysed the fishermen’s perceptions on the South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) and its interactions with the local fishery close to the Wildlife Refuge of Ilha dos Lobos, a marine protected area in southern Brazil. Sea lions prey upon the same resources targeted by the fishermen. They repeatedly hunt on the nets and consequently damage them. In response, fishermen persecute sea lions. However, in conflicts with high-profile animals, the perceived damage often exceeds the actual evidence. Results from 100 interviews revealed that fishermen’s perception of damage and their attitudes were affected by age, hierarchical position in the crew, if fishing was the only source of income, and level of formal education. Greater perception of damage and more negative attitude were found among older, less educated sailor fishermen who had no other source of income besides fishing. The average fisherman had a relatively good knowledge about sea lions, but also a negative attitude towards them. We recommend actions addressing these negative attitudes through environmental education, with emphasis on adjusting exaggerated perceptions of impact and the potential of the species for wildlife tourism, as a vital step towards the conciliation of sustainable fisheries and O. flavescens conservation in the Brazilian coast.Fil: Pont, Ana Carolina. Nuevas propuestas de integración regional: tendencias y retos de transformación

    No full text
This book addresses the challenges generated by the new international and regional trends, which have arisen from the transformations of the current international system as a result of the most recent events. The authors start, as a frame of reference, from a changing international scenario, from which they analyze and reflect on exhaustion and stagnation, crisis or chaos, the growing uncertainty of Latin American integration processes and projects. Among the recent national, regional and international changes, the relative weight loss of the West, the relative withdrawal of the United States as a paymaster, the consolidation of new emerging powers, the new strategies of international insertion such as interregionalism and the effects of the globalization that, in the face of negative externalities, demands greater international cooperation for collective action. Opportunity scenarios are identified and highlighted to overcome the crossroads of the current state in terms of regional integration.

Characterization of a new trabectedin resistant myxoid liposarcoma cell line that shows collateral sensitivity to methylating agents

Myxoid Liposarcomas (MLS), characterized by the expression of FUS-CHOP fusion gene are clinically very sensitive to the DNA binding antitumour agent, trabectedin. However, resistance eventually occurs, preventing disease eradication. In order to investigate the mechanisms of resistance, a trabectedin resistant cell line,402-91/ET, was developed. The resistance to trabectedin was not related to the expression of MDR related proteins, uptake/efflux of trabectedin or GSH levels that were similar in parental and resistant cells. 402-91/ET cells were hypersensitive to UV-light because of a nucleotide excision repair defect: XPG complementation decreased sensitivity to UV-rays, but only partially to trabectedin. 402-91/ET cells showed collateral sensitivity to temozolomide due to the lack of O(6) -methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT) activity, related to the hypermethylation of MGMT promoter. In 402-91 cells chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays showed that FUS-CHOP was bound to the PTX3 and FN1 gene promoters, as previously described, and trabectedin caused FUS-CHOP detachment from DNA. Here we report that, in contrast, in 402-91/ET cells, FUS-CHOP was not bound to these promoters. Differences in the modulation of transcription of genes involved in different pathways including signal transduction, apoptosis and stress response between the two cell lines were found. Trabectedin activates the transcription of genes involved in the adipogenic-program such as c/EBPalpha and beta, in 402-91 but not in 402-91/ET cell lines. The collateral sensitivity of 402-91/ET to temozolomide provides the rationale to investigate the potential use of methylating agents in MLS patients resistant to trabectedin
