    Neural correlates of phonological, orthographic and semantic reading processing in dyslexia

    Developmental dyslexia is one of the most prevalent learning disabilities, thought to be associated with dysfunction in the neural systems underlying typical reading acquisition. Neuroimaging research has shown that readers with dyslexia exhibit regional hypoactivation in left hemisphere reading nodes, relative to control counterparts. This evidence, however, comes from studies that have focused only on isolated aspects of reading. The present study aims to characterize left hemisphere regional hypoactivation in readers with dyslexia for the main processes involved in successful reading: phonological, orthographic and semantic. Forty-one participants performed a demanding reading task during MRI scanning. Results showed that readers with dyslexia exhibited hypoactivation associated with phonological processing in parietal regions; with orthographic processing in parietal regions, Broca's area, ventral occipitotemporal cortex and thalamus; and with semantic processing in angular gyrus and hippocampus. Stronger functional connectivity was observed for readers with dyslexia than for control readers 1) between the thalamus and the inferior parietal cortex/ventral occipitotemporal cortex during pseudoword reading; and, 2) between the hippocampus and the pars opercularis during word reading. These findings constitute the strongest evidence to date for the interplay between regional hypoactivation and functional connectivity in the main processes supporting reading in dyslexia.     Square vortex solitons with a large angular momentum

    We show the existence of square shaped optical vortices with a large value of the angular momentum hosted in finite size laser beams which propagate in nonlinear media with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The light profiles take the form of rings with sharp boundaries and variable sizes depending on the power carried. Our stability analysis shows that these light distributions remain stable when propagate, probably for unlimited values of the angular momentum, provided the hosting beam is wide enough. This happens if the peak amplitude approaches a critical value which only depends on the nonlinear refractive index of the material. A variational approach allows us to calculate the main parameters involved. Our results add extra support to the concept of surface tension of light beams that can be considered as a trace of the existence of a liquid of light.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys.     PHF2 regulates homology-directed DNA repair by controlling the resection of DNA double strand breaks

    Post-translational histone modifications and chromatin remodelling play a critical role controlling the integrity of the genome. Here, we identify histone lysine demethylase PHF2 as a novel regulator of the DNA damage response by regulating DNA damage-induced focus formation of 53BP1 and BRCA1, critical factors in the pathway choice for DNA double strand break repair. PHF2 knockdown leads to impaired BRCA1 focus formation and delays the resolution of 53BP1 foci. Moreover, irradiation-induced RPA phosphorylation and focus formation, as well as localization of CtIP, required for DNA end resection, to sites of DNA lesions are affected by depletion of PHF2. These results are indicative of a defective resection of double strand breaks and thereby an impaired homologous recombination upon PHF2 depletion. In accordance with these data, Rad51 focus formation and homology-directed double strand break repair is inhibited in cells depleted for PHF2. Importantly, we demonstrate that PHF2 knockdown decreases CtIP and BRCA1 protein and mRNA levels, an effect that is dependent on the demethylase activity of PHF2. Furthermore, PHF2-depleted cells display genome instability and are mildly sensitive to the inhibition of PARP.     Detection of mild cognitive impairment in people older than 65 years of age and its relationship to cardiovascular risk factors (DECRIVAM)

    [ENG]Background: Studies centered on the detection of cognitive impairment and its relationship to cardiovascular risk factors in elderly people have gained special relevance in recent years. Knowledge of the cardiovascular risk factors that may be associated to cognitive impairment could be very useful for introducing treatments in early stagesthereby possibly contributing to improve patient quality of life. The present study explores cognitive performance in people over 65 years of age in Salamanca (Spain), with special emphasis on the identification of early symptoms of cognitive impairment, with the purpose of detecting mild cognitive impairment and of studying the relationships between this clinical situation and cardiovascular risk factors. Methods/Design: A longitudinal study is contemplated. The reference population will consist of 420 people over 65 years of age enrolled through randomized sampling stratified by healthcare area, and who previously participated in another study. Measurement: a) Sociodemographic variables; b) Cardiovascular risk factors; c) Comorbidity; d) Functional level for daily life activities; and e) Study of higher cognitive functions based on a neuropsychological battery especially adapted to the evaluation of elderly people. Discussion: We hope that this study will afford objective information on the representative prevalence of cognitive impairment in the population over 65 years of age in Salamanca. We also hope to obtain data on the relationship between cognitive impairment and cardiovascular risk factors in this specific population group. Based on the results obtained, we also will be able to establish the usefulness of some of the screening tests applied during the study, such as the Mini-Mental State Examination and the 7 Minute Screen test.     Contribución de las actividades prácticas en la evaluación de asignaturas pertenecientes a grados de ciencias experimentales

    Se presentan los resultados del proceso de evaluación de algunas asignaturas experimentales incluidas dentro de diferentes títulos, Grado en Biología, Grado en Ciencias del Mar, Grado en Químicas, Grado en Óptica y Optometría y Grado en Ingeniería Química, en las que el Departamento de Química Orgánica de la Universidad de Alicante está involucrado. Los resultados recogidos muestran como la evaluación continua y la realización de una prueba final influyen en la calificación final de la asignatura. Además, dentro de la evaluación continua se han diseñado diferentes actividades, considerando la realización de prácticas de laboratorio, la resolución de problemas y presentación de los mismos, así como la entrega de cuestionarios y ejercicios a través de plataformas virtuales. Se presenta el análisis de como cada una de estas actividades contribuye en el resultado final obtenido por los estudiantes, mostrando que las actividades de carácter práctico influyen en la calificación final de una manera más positiva

    En la presente memoria se detallan los resultados del análisis comparativo del proceso de evaluación continua, así como su influencia en la calificación final del alumno, en diferentes asignaturas de grado adscritas al área de conocimiento de Química Orgánica: Grado de Biología y Ciencias del Mar, asignatura Química, código 26510; Grado de Química, asignatura Determinación Estructural de Compuestos Orgánicos, código 26030; Grado en Óptica y Optometría, asignatura Química, código 24014 y Grado en Ingeniería Química, asignatura Química Orgánica Aplicada, código 34513. Dicho análisis comparativo es fruto de los resultados obtenidos por el alumno en las diversas metodologías y estrategias docentes aplicadas en el proceso de evaluación continua que, como se verá, repercuten de manera notable en la calificación final de las asignaturas. También se pretende evaluar el rendimiento y competencias conseguidas por el alumno, destacando ventajas e inconvenientes de la evaluación continua durante el desarrollo de la asignatura. Y como último fin de este estudio se debatirá sobre las estrategias que hayan resultado más efectivas para su posible implantación en sucesivos cursos académicos

    Consideraciones del estudiante sobre su formación práctica en asignaturas del área de conocimiento de química orgánica

    En la presente comunicación se detallarán los resultados obtenidos de la valoración del alumno sobre los créditos prácticos en diferentes asignaturas de grado (Grado en Biología, y Grado en Ciencias del Mar: 26510, Química; Grado en Química: 26030, Determinación Estructural de Compuestos Orgánicos y 26050, Química Farmacéutica; Grado en Ingeniería Química: 34513, Química Orgánica Aplicada) adscritas al área de conocimiento de Química Orgánica. Se presentarán y analizarán los resultados obtenidos de esta valoración por parte del alumnado de las diferentes actividades prácticas implantadas en dichas asignaturas y su repercusión en la comprensión y seguimiento de las mismas. También se pretende evaluar cuales son las estrategias más efectivas y cuales son susceptibles de cambios. Y como último fin de este estudio se debatirá sobre las posibles mejoras propuestas por el alumno para su posible implantación en sucesivos cursos académicos
