The development of intelligent environments is considered an important step towards the realization of the ambient intelligence vision. Intelligent environments are technologically augmented everyday spaces, which intuitively support human activity. The IE conferences traditionally provide a leading edge forum for researchers and engineers to present their latest research and to discuss future directions in the area of intelligent environments. This article briefly presents the content of the Fifth International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE09), which was held July 20–21 at the Castelldefels campus, of the Technical University of Catalonia, near Barcelona, Spain.Postprint (published version

A goodness-of-fit test for the multivariate Poisson distribution

    Get PDF
Bivariate count data arise in several different disciplines and the bivariate Poisson distribution is commonly used to model them. This paper proposes and studies a computationally convenient goodness-of-fit test for this distribution, which is based on an empirical counterpart of a system of equations. The test is consistent against fixed alternatives. The null distribution of the test can be consistently approximated by a parametric bootstrap and by a weighted bootstrap. The goodness of these bootstrap estimators and the power for finite sample sizes are numerically studied. It is shown that the proposed test can be naturally extended to the multivariate Poisson distribution.Universidad del Bío-Bío (Chile)Ministerio de Educación (Chile)Ministerio de Economía y Competitivida

Contagion between United States and european markets during the recent crises

    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper is to detect the existence of financial contagion between the North American and European markets during the recent crises. To accomplish this, the relationships between the US and the Euro zone stock markets are considered, taking the daily equity prices of the Standard and Poor’s 500 as representative of the United States market and for the European market, the five most representative indexes. Time Series Factor Analysis (TSFA) procedure has allowed concentrating the information of the European indexes into a unique factor, which captures the underlying structure of the European return series. The relationship between the European factor and the US stock return series has been analyzed by means of the dynamic conditional correlation model (DCC). Once the DCC is estimated, the contagion between both markets is analyzed. Finally, in order to explain the sudden changes in dynamic US-EU correlation, a Markov switching model is fitted, using as input variables the macroeconomic ones associated with the monetary policies of the US as well as those related to uncertainty in the markets. The results show that there was contagion between the United States and European markets in the Subprime and Global Financial crises. The two-regime Markov switching model has helped to explain the variability of the pair-wise correlation. The first regime contains mostly the financially stable periods, and the dynamic correlations in this regime are explained by macroeconomic variables and other related with monetary policies in Europe and US. The second regime is explained mainly by the Federal Funds rate and the evolution of the Euro/US Exchange rate.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Influences of Learning Approaches, Student Engagement, and Satisfaction with Learning on Measures of Sustainable Behavior in a Social Sciences Student Sample

    Get PDF
In this empirical study, we address the relationship between the dimensions of learning in higher education (i.e., student engagement, approaches to learning, and satisfaction with learning) and sustainability (i.e., austerity altruistic, pro-ecological and equitable behavior). The results demonstrate that there is a positive linear relationship between engagement with learning and deep and strategic approaches, motivation and strategies, and altruistic, equitable and pro-ecological behavior. Austerity, however, only correlated with high dedication to learning. Satisfaction with learning was associated with altruistic and equitable behavior and an overall measure of sustainability, and was independently associated with austerity and pro-ecological behavior. Engagement with learning was associated with sustainable behavior, especially with altruistic and pro-ecological behavior in its three expressions, namely, vigor, absorption and dedication. In contrast, austerity was found to be only associated with engagement with learning. As a whole, and in line with Bronfenbrenner’s theory, the results of this study suggest that the aforementioned systems are interconnected and mutually influence each other

We centres on the exposition and development of probabilistic sampling designs that allow to realize surveys from the World Wide Web with the necessary accuracy to be able to infer the results obtained to the population under study, with certain reliability

Spatial Distribution of Wettability in Aluminum Surfaces Treated with an Atmospheric-Pressure Remote-Plasma

The use of atmospheric-pressure remote plasmas (postdischarge) sustained in argon and argon–nitrogen for the treatment of aluminum surfaces has been studied to better understand the underlying mechanisms responsible for cleaning and activating the surfaces. The effect of the gas composition, treatment distance, and speed on the hydrophilicity of commercial aluminum samples has been studied using the sessile drop method to build spatial profiles of the treated zones. In the case of argon–nitrogen postdischarges, neither the distance to the plasma end (2 < z z < 6 cm) nor the treatment speed (2500 < v < 7500 μm/s) had a significant impact in the spot radius of the treatment, remaining approximately constant around 6–7 mm. This result seems to indicate that the postdischarge experiments a little expansion at the exit of the tube in which the discharge was created but its action can be considered highly-directional. This fact is essential for the possible industrial implementation of the procedure described in this research. These results have been analyzed together with the composition of active species in the postdischarge by using optical emission spectroscopy, revealing that long lived nitrogen species are required to significantly increase the wettability of the aluminum surfaces

The present projects past behavior into the future while the past projects attitudes into the future: how verb tense moderates predictors of drinking intentions

Three studies examined how the use of the present versus the past tense in recalling a past experience influences behavioral intentions. Experiment 1 revealed a stronger influence of past behaviors on drinking intentionswhen participants self-reported an episode of excessive drinking using the present tense. Correspondingly, therewas a stronger influence of attitudes towards excessive drinking when participants self-reported the episode in the past tense. Experiments 2 and 3 liked this effect to changes in construal level (Liberman, Trope, & Stephan, 2007; Trope & Liberman, 2003), with the present tense being similar to a concrete construal level and the past tense being similar to an abstract construal level. This research was supported by grants from Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación PSI2008-04849 and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad PSI2011-28720 and by grants from the National Institutes of Health (K02-MH01861 and R01-NR08325)

With this chapter, dedicated to the syntactic dictionaries, we try, first of all, to analyze the peculiarities, achievements and disadvantages of the Diccionario de construcción y régimen de la lengua castellana, of R. J. Cuervo, unique dictionary in its modality. After analyzing the characteristics that we have considered essential in the same, we have tracked other proposals of syntactic dictionary, among which the Diccionario de construcciones sintácticas del español. Preposiciones, by E. Náñez Fernández, although very particular in terms of the dictionary concept itself. For this reason, we also refer to the proposals of bilingual dictionaries of valences as possible referents for the development of an exclusive valence dictionary for Spanish.
